Yeah, though personally I think the boat situation is an insta-"kill the other guys" too. A neat plot twist would be if he'd rigged the game so that the detonators were in fact connected to the boats they were on, and then the "innocent" people could've blown themselves up.
This is honestly what I think he did, although we will never know

+1 here. In fact he pretty much all but says that's what he did. As to the original moral dilemma given: Whether you intend to join Jokers crew or not. Survival is always your number one priority. Killing your buddy is the only way to roll, and then, first chance you get, you get the hell out of dodge.
