Default ITT We Discuss A Scene and Moral Decison From Dark Knight

So the background for this is I'm doing my research paper on The Dark Knight and was discussing this scene with my friend. The question I have is, what would you do if you were in the place of one of the two guys who are left in the room with the broken pool cue?

And here is the you tube link for said scene:

If I don't kill him I'm dead. Plus, I'm a gangster. Where would my morals be coming from, exactly?

Although preferably I'd like choice C: work with the other dude to kill these other MFers.

there are actually 3 of them, but i think the question is a little ridonkulous because at this point its just survival of the fittest and its not so much about morals.

the joker doesn't say that you have to kill or be killed. and how do you even know they want to fight to the death anyways?

well its kind of implied...he breaks a pool stick in half suggest one is going to have to stab the other two with it. plus come on, its the fucking joker, ofc he means death.

There are so so so many things I value more than my life. I would do nothing because fighting would be playing into the joker's game. He's trying to undermine civilization by forcing people into a state where surviving means destroying whatever loyalty you have to your leader and your brothers.

I'm the kind of person who would start thinking about those things. Ironically the fact that I was thinking about it so much would be the reason I would be doing nothing.

I was trying to look at it as a moral, not pragmatic, question. In the moment I would probably just grab the cue to prevent being killed immediately and proceed from there.

    No hindsight for the blind.
I never realized that there are three people, now a third poll option is needed: "stand back and let the other two tire each other out, swooping in for the final kill once one of them is dead and the other is injured/exhausted"

Maybe I was implying you're afraid to fight. Or maybe I was simply barking at you with an english accent.

well he does say there's only one position open in his new operation. and if he isn't implying them killing each other, why does he give them weapons? if they have guns held to their heads to begin with, it doesn't really look like the joker is very interested in preserving their lives. not to mention, he tries to get people to kill each other in other parts of the movie (the reporter who was going to out bruce wayne, the ferry scene) but he cares about these thugs in this scene? doubtful

Also, I think the boat scene was a much better example of a "moral dilemma" if you insist on using this movie. Or the ldo choice, picking the girl or harvey harvey harvey dent, scuse me, i wanna drive!

It takes more courage to do nothing. Your natural instincts are fight or flight. Since flight isn't an option, to fight is the default. To fight is what your body will try to do, you don't need to be brave to obey it.

If you were barking at me with an english accent I would be forced to remark that you cannot possibly be in fact english because your accent is so perfect.

Yeah, though personally I think the boat situation is an insta-"kill the other guys" too. A neat plot twist would be if he'd rigged the game so that the detonators were in fact connected to the boats they were on, and then the "innocent" people could've blown themselves up.

Took me awhile, but when the scenes came up where one person on each boat looked like they were going to push the button, then didn't - that's what I was thinking too.

This movie had some really good nth level thinking in it.

+1 here. In fact he pretty much all but says that's what he did. As to the original moral dilemma given: Whether you intend to join Jokers crew or not. Survival is always your number one priority. Killing your buddy is the only way to roll, and then, first chance you get, you get the hell out of dodge.
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

I would do neither and gtfo at the first opportunity. You are all assuming the winner still gets to roll with the Joker. He is just as likely to shoot you for taking to long when you win or for no reason at all. Follow Joshua's conclusion in War Games, the only way to win a game you can't win is not to play!

how come nobody mentioned the Jack Bauer option of picking up the pool cue and killing all of the other gangsta's in the room then forcing the Joker to tell him where the detonator, or CIP or whatever device Jack needed to find is?
