    Default 3-barrelling on river scare card

    I thought there was a pretty good chance I had the best hand when I bet on the flop and turn, but after he called my turn bet, I wasn't so sure. Do you like my river bet? I didn't expect any huge folds (2 pair or trips), but I thought it might fold out 77, 88, and maybe even a pair of 9s or TT with how passive villain played. Also, I would play hands like broadway-h&9h+, 99+, 55-44, 22, and A3s similarly, so I felt like my bluff (if I was indeed behind) was good for range balancing.

    PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (8 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

    UTG+1 ($29.15)
    MP1 ($29.60)
    MP2 ($35)
    Hero (CO) ($26.40)
    Button ($18.95)
    SB ($29.25)
    BB ($10.55)
    UTG ($7.85)

    Preflop: Hero is CO with 6, 6
    4 folds, Hero raises to $0.75, 1 fold, SB calls $0.65, 1 fold

    Flop: ($1.75) 2, 9, 4 (2 players)
    SB checks, Hero bets $1.20, SB calls $1.20

    Turn: ($4.15) 5 (2 players)
    SB checks, Hero bets $2.50, SB calls $2.50

    River: ($9.15) J (2 players)
    SB checks, Hero bets $5

    Interesting... even against a fairly wide CO range (22+,A2s+,K7s+,Q8s+,J8s+,T8s+,98s,87s,76s,65s,54s, A8o+,K9o+,QTo+,JTo), TT is only about 60% on this river. Since my range is probably better than that given the betting, TT should be folding here a lot if they know what they're doing.

    that's not a scare card because there was no flush draw on the flop
    if I have TT I'll just call the river anyway

    Any reads on SB? We need to give him a range that he would be calling PF with in the SB. Don't mind the flop and turn play. If you get called on the river obv. your getting called by a hand that always beats you. I would probably check behind on the river.

    that's not always true
    you can 3b when you have been betting a strong draw and all the draws possibly just missed and you're fairly sure the guy has a draw as well in which case you can throw out a 1/3 pot bet on the river and take it down

    but if you're going to barrel, do it for the RIGHT reason

    You CAN 3 barrel at 25NL but it should be RARE and you should figure out why

    88+ are still calling this river bet if they thought they were ahead on the turn.
    a more appropriate scare card would be an ace then a backdoor flush draw.

    Thanks for the advice. Villain folded FWIW, but at least I know this is a bad play generally.

    himself fucker.
    I would always check behind on the turn, bet odd rivers if this line tends to get looked up. I would bet 2 streets, check behind on rivers if this line gets looked up. If opponents are buuholes, I would check behind turn and call river/check river. Sometimes I would option to check behind the flop and call/bet the turn.

    I was curious, so I ran my range (including some bluffs) here against a few hands. TT is an instacall. As for some other hands, needing better than 26% equity to make this call profitable against my range, any 9 is ahead often enough to make it, 88 is close, and 77 is too far behind.

    Code:
    Hand 0: 	42.534%  	42.08% 	00.45% 	           279 	        3.00   { 22+, AKs, AhQh, AhTh, A9s, A3s, KhQh, KhTh, K9s, QhTh, Q9s, J9s, AKo, A9o, K9o }
    Hand 1: 	57.466%  	57.01% 	00.45% 	           378 	        3.00   { TT }

    Hand 0: 	64.474%  	64.47% 	00.00% 	           588 	        0.00   { 22+, AKs, AhQh, AhTh, A9s, A3s, KhQh, KhTh, K9s, QhTh, Q9s, J9s, AKo, A9o, K9o }
    Hand 1: 	35.526%  	35.53% 	00.00% 	           324 	        0.00   { 93o }

    Hand 0: 	70.089%  	69.64% 	00.45% 	           468 	        3.00   { 22+, AKs, AhQh, AhTh, A9s, A3s, KhQh, KhTh, K9s, QhTh, Q9s, J9s, AKo, A9o, K9o }
    Hand 1: 	29.911%  	29.46% 	00.45% 	           198 	        3.00   { 88 }

    Hand 0: 	75.446%  	75.00% 	00.45% 	           504 	        3.00   { 22+, AKs, AhQh, AhTh, A9s, A3s, KhQh, KhTh, K9s, QhTh, Q9s, J9s, AKo, A9o, K9o }
    Hand 1: 	24.554%  	24.11% 	00.45% 	           162 	        3.00   { 77 }

    So my river bet is pretty bad considering that I only expect a good player to fold 1 hand that beats me, and certainly no one that I'm beating is calling.

    I felt like I had to bet that flop because I felt I was ahead of villain's range and I might get looked up with overs. I agree that checking behind the turn is probably more longterm profitable without a read that villain is a calling station. And of course, as played I needed to bet more (full pot) or check behind the river, with checking behind being the preferable choice.
