lol, I wasn't thinking that when I started this thread at all. I might have some fun with it but I doubt it turns into an official well, but I guess we'll see. I doubt whatever happens here will be that interesting so a lot of people can stop reading now.

What's it like being a teacher?
Jeeze, I could go on and on about this question. Sooooooo many different directions to go on this one. I guess I'll give the quick rundown:

It's awesome. I had a lot of great teachers growing up, a lot of great role models.....and I dunno, I just really appreciated everything my teachers and/or role models did for me. I've taken bits and pieces from each one of them and formed them into the person I am today, and I think that shines through in my teaching. I think my kids learn a lot about the subject material in my class (American History) but I think they take even more away from how to act as a responsible adult. LOL, that may seem like the opposite of how I am on here but I'm a pretty respectable/good guy in real life, I talk about my wife all the time (lots of my kids are from single-parent homes) etc...

That said, being a teacher is tough too. I can't *ever* have an "off" day. I can't just phone it in. I've got to be on my game every day. The work doesn't stop when the final bell rings, either. I've got to plan, grade papers, write e-mails and/or call parents, etc.......Throw in coaching and my days are sometimes 13-14 hours. There are many days where I work, eat, work, then sleep...

At the end of the day it's awesome, though.......I love it, I like being around my kids, I think they really like being around me, etc...

    Any hot students?
Sure there are hot studnets, but I'm only commenting on the ones that are 18, though, lol.

For real, though, of course there are hot girls walking around my high school, and they're not all of age either. Many of them know they're hot and don't mind showing it. There's been a few throughout my career that have said "what's up" in more ways than one. The key thing is letting them know you're not interested, talking about your wife constantly, and if anything ever comes up removing yourself from the situation as fast as possible.

It's just something you deal with, the looks of high school girls...When I was a 23 year old student teacher I was going insane thinking I had to absolutely ignore the hotness that was around me....finally somebody said something to me and let me know that it was okay to be human and think they were attractive. Now I don't ignore it but I don't pay it any attention at the same time, if that makes sense.

Wait, what grade do you teach (if over 8th grade then question 2 stands)?
I teach high school. And WTF, you're into 14 and 15 year olds? GROSS.

lol, we're cool, I know what you meant.

    Two reasons I guess.

First off, a teacher in my school district got in a little bit of trouble over a facebook/myspace account. She had some pictures of her at parties and stuff, nothing too crazy but still not appropriate at the same time. She also had some blog-stuff that mentioned a few of her students (not by name), but close enough to know who they were talking about, what situation they were talking about, etc...

It's not like I've posted anything like that on here, but my picture has been posted her and I have a few stories floating around about me that aren't the coolest, etc.......so I figured why take any chances and just change it?

    2) I am never going to play drunk again so I figured a new name could bring about new results for poker? I used to actually make money at this game..........I took out 10k to put a down-payment on a house, paid off bills for about three months (4k), and have taken a few vacations in the past (2k). Taking my last 3k and playing drunk was stupid. I need to make up for that mistake by making it back (times ten), and never playing drunk again.

    There you go?

    Your son's name is badass.

Seriously, your son is going to thank you some day for you naming him George. It's just a unique name that not a lot of other people have (unless people are starting to name babies George now-a-days?). I'm a pretty cool guy but if I was a Jon or Matt maybe I wouldn't be seen as such a cool guy? I dunno.

The name is UG and will stay that way for the time being. Flomo, don't look at my name and say "uggh" like when you bust your nut too early or something leaving your female friend wanting more.

It's UG like You-Gee, yo, don't forget that.

What do you think of your colleagues? My mom was a teacher and always complained about how lazy and stupid they were.

That's a good question. What percentage of your colleagues are actually good teachers? I think there's very few people in the profession that are capable of delivering the knowledge in a satisfactory manner. Way too many are just talking text books.

    Well thread you say?
How far can you hit a baseball thrown at 88mph on a decending trajectory of 6% with a bat made of composite material that carries a high coefficient of restitution in average atmospheric pressures?

How do you define "good teaching"?... Everyone think this is such a simple question...
So you click their picture and then you get their money?

Hmm, I hate a few things...

I hate grading papers. Teaching all day, if you do it right, wears you the fuck out. At the end of the day the last thing I want to do is grade papers. Looking at the same questions/answers over and over again isn't fun. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if I only had twenty students, but I teach 120+ so it can get overwhelming sometimes.

I hate that we start school so damn early. My first class is at 7:20am. I have to be there at 7:00am. I'm awake and rocking but my kids are half-dead until at least 8:30am or so. Studies have shown that kids learn more and are more productive if they start school later, yet we start earlier than anyone else in the city because it saves us money on buses. In the end it's all about the dolla-dolla bill ya'll.

I hate the hours that go into my job. 7am to 3pm isn't so bad, but having to plan my next day (or week) sucks sometimes. I'd say an hour or two of planning is standard for every day of class, so that extends my work-week a ton. That's during the off season. When I'm coaching a sport, and I coach two, I'm at school from 7am-6pm every day and still have to plan/grade/etc.

Good thing I have a LOT that I love about my job. All of those things easily make up for the crappy aspects.

I generally like my colleagues. That doesn't mean I want to hang out with them on the weekends, or see them outside of work for that matter, but I generally like them as people.

My closest friends at school are fellow coaches. That's probably because we have the same backgrounds (all of us played sports in high school, and a lot of us played sports in college), along with similar interests and personalities. I interact with these people quite a bit at school but only see a few of them outside of school.

With all of that said, yes, I do work with a few idiots. But doesn't everybody?

Jeeze, I don't even want to throw a guess out there as to what percentage of my colleagues are actually good teachers. I know a few that are really terrible, quite a few that are mediocre, and more still that are actually good at what they do. As for a percentage I have no clue...

What makes a good teacher, anyway?

People write books on this stuff, I wrote multiple papers on this topic in college, I have four years of experience under my belt, etc, and there's still no easy way to answer this. I could go on and on about what I think makes up a "good teacher," all of the different aspects of it, but I'd be at this computer for days.

I just hope that I exhibit the qualities of a "good teacher" on a daily basis, and I'm pretty sure that I do.

Do you believe that you've reached your full potential in life? Or are you no where near close? If so, what do you believe you've still got left in you? Where can you go, what could you do?

I hope so but it looks doubtful. My wife is in school getting another degree (she already has two). Money isn't tight, necessarily, but we're not at a point where I can do an FTR trip this summer (at least the way things are right now).

I'm going to start playing poker again, starting tomorrow, so......if that goes well things could change.

Why hold back? I know by you saying "pics of 18yr olds," you're really meaning to say, "pics of the hottest girls at your school." You can't fool me.

I hate to be one to disappoint, but sorry dude, but I'm not biting.

I share my personal collection with no one. ZING.
