5NL FR JJ vs UTG raise

Opp is 13/5 at the time of the hand. Only 20 hands so not very significant.

I have him on 88+,AQ pre. I always hesitate to reraise or not with JJ, but as I have been aggressive the last orbit, and am barely ahead of his range I decided to just call and play it for overpair/set value.

His check on the flop does not necessarily mean much because he could be doing it with his whole range. Missed with overs, careful with a medium PP or even slowplaying AA or KK or a set and planning to check raise. I figured that with his check he is more likely to hold AK or AQ than the rest, and that the flop missed most of his range, and I bet the pot to get value from these hands.

Comes his call, the turn and his 40% pot bet. Really puzzled at this stage and wondering whether this is a blocking bet / semi-bluff with a draw or a slowplayed set / high pair or even maybe just a dumb bluff with an AK he can't let go. I really don't like any of my options here.

Same story on the river, can I ever not call the 1/3rd pot bet? I know he is not often showing down AK or 99/TT, but some opps also do that as a small bluff with missed draws.

HH is messed up, but I assume he's utg.

If you call the turn, you have to call the river. You have to make your decision to commit on the turn. Once you call, folding isn't an option. I prefer to just raise the turn all-in for protection and because then he will have to call with his draws if he has any and has no option to play those hands perfectly otr.

If you think about your equity against his range, think about your pot equity as 2:1. You're not calling 55c on the turn, you're calling $1.3, because you can't fold that hand with 50bb stacks getting 4:1 otr.

You're very right about the turn, thanks for that. Especially as lots of draws popped up on the turn. To be honest, while playing the hand I haven't paid attention to his stack size, it's only when doing the post that I realized he was short stacked.

How about 3b pre? Flop sizing?

i personally don't like 3betting pre because you're not getting value from enough of a seemingly nitty opener's 3bet calling range. you're almost turning a hand which has decent equity vs his opening range into a bluff. or to put it another way, because he's a seemingly tight player, by 3-betting your manipulating his already tight range into being even tighter, and probably giving up some equity by making him fold hands like AJ or 22-77 that are in his opening range but not his 3-bet calling range.
