SNG Experiment HH - Hands 1 to 25

OK, this is going to take some time to put together, so I thought I would feed it out 25 hands at a time. That's all the forum can take anyway. Comment as a reply to this thread.

Thanks to bjsaust for automating the collation of everybody's hole cards.

Pre-game comments:

Another one of these experiments. I know that TLR will play LAGGy because he will expect the table to be squeaky tight. Detroit (th1986) is a turbo SNG player so I expect to see some push/fold action here. Same with bjs. Not sure how kmind, bonaparte and elitemob will play and Jack Sawyer is providing some overlay. Gogogo!

Interestingly I think these experiments have matured past being the 'learning' experience they started off as. The first couple people tended to play like they would normal sng's, but people have realised this and adjusted. Where it gets interesting is how individuals adjust. Do they open up their PF range? Do they call looser and play post flop poker? Do they 3-bet more? Last experiment saw a LOT of restealing, much more than you'd see in a normal SnG, will this one be the same, or will it be another dynamic this time? Me, I plan to stick basically to my normal game, especially early, try to get reads on people and adjust if neccessary as we go along.

Ok, so this is it then, my first SnG experiment. If you ask me then I would say that I am definitly the least experienced player of all the guys at the table. Since I am a cash table player my only slight advantage will be post flop play, let's hope I can use that somehow. I've got Detroit and BjsAust to my immediate right which is pretty bad, because from what I've see them post on the forums I'd say they're both very good. Skeeno and taipan are to my left. I don't know much about skeeno, but I know that taipan is extremly experienced and one of the most active members of the SnG forums.

Okay so here we go, checked out as much as possible of the opponents via sharkscope and OPR, not much to be gleaned all seem very decent, I'm going in very blind as I've no stats against anyone plus I have been playing limit ring all day lol. I'm guessing all are pretty solid, no ones going to want to make a fool of themselves at any least!

Anyways here to confidence and just to play aswell as normal (I'll come 9th lol)

Edit - the majority of these notes are after the game, although early hands I noted things as I went. Later on I pretty much did away with notes, so it's from memory.

Pregame thoughts: I assumed it would be a tight game, and I had a feeling Tai will play a bit looser then usual, my plan was to play looser and try to build a big stack early, figuring that big stack will have a lot of respect on this table.

Early blinds I have no interest in playing around. Happy to fold this.

I was a little confused at first if we're REALLY going to start now or not, since Jack was still sitting out. Additionally I was pretty overwhelmed by the speed of the game at first and didn't really think or play the first 3 hands. I had this impression all of you think like 10 times faster than me.

No real idea on seat positioning, i.e whether its favourable, I'm pretty sure everyone is really competent and decent, no standard clowns anyways aside from me lol. To the right of Roofkid and th1986. I'm really unsure as to who anyone is, Taipan on my right and I'm aware he's a very decent player so I'm not overly joyed at that. 7J not worth worrying about.

Normally I would just limp this from MP but I'm sure this table will play tight and they won't try to resteal this early.

Wonder what he had here? I would say his range early is JJ+AQ+ to raise , so easy folds.

I would've called that hand if there weren't any raises in front of me.

This hand seems kind of interesting to me. I obviously raise this pre. I had a few comments on my bet sizing so I will explain why I do the "weird" numbers. For two reasons, mainly because you can bet slightly less than what most people bet and get the same amount of folds. This makes this play more +EV when betting smaller. I also like to play a lot of hands so getting to flops cheap is something I love. I also think my cash game play helps me play well enough postflop. Flop looks good for me. Any Jx hand is going to call, as well as 76 or T9. Of course sets or slow played rockets can as well, but these will usually raise. Turn is an interesting card. AJ has me crushed but would probably raise flop. Me betting meant I wanted to see where I was at and I also bet barely over half because I think this bet does the same as a higher bet. He either folds most J hands or calls with hands that should have me beat. That thinking isn't too good though when I look at it, you want to get as much value from a worse hand as you can. Holding complete trash in my hand is much better than me having KK when I bet the turn because now my hand with showdown value is turned into a bluff. Bad move on my part.

Have the button here and attempt an early move, again 3x raise from todd (kmind) I'm really putting him on a pretty wide range, I feel his raise his more of one to test the blinds than anything else, anyways I'm quite happy to play this sort of hand early with position. The flop gives me an OESD so not bad, his bet on the turn again strikes me as a pretty standard cont bet 3/4 of the pot, chances are he may have a monster, but anyways I flat call again - I guess in hindsight I could raise here, but I'm more than happy to call, probably a bad move and try and take it away if he checks the turn. The turn is an Ace, good card if he checks alas todd double barrels and I'm done with the hand. Guess in hindsight a pretty rubbish move but there you go

Lol, BB special! Not terrible for tlr to complete there, he knows if I let him complete I have crap and he can take it post flop most times.

Retrospect: Why didn't I at least call this one. I suppose I was still very intimidated.

Missed this hand first time as I was upstairs, goes to show limping with the likes of 25 doesn't always work. Awkward flop aswell as I'm sure Forty feels he's miles ahead after the turn it pretty much plays itself

I tried to limp again, as long as the blinds are low and I can complete without being raised automatically I will do so.
On the flop I decided to check it to maybe get BjsAust to bet, which did not work out
Turn put a 3 str8 on board, so I decided to bet it, the reraise surprised me, but I though it could be 1 pair, some sort of pair + draw or combo draw
River - I misplayed the river, I should have checked-called it, but went for a check-raise because I thought he was trying to represent a bigger hand then he has

This was a costly hand, mainly due to my mistake on the river, now I needed to adjust the strategy a bit, usually when I am short stacked I am looking for a good spot to double up, however here I knew it will be very hard to double up, so I needed to start building my stack by winning small-medium pots

That was a pretty cash-tablish raise, but I think it was ok, even from early position. Too bad everyony folded to me (and after me). That would have been an ideal chance to put my post flop experience into play.

4x raise from SB rooftop, 4J not worth seeing a flop with even in position, I'll give him credit for a much better hand

If skeeno hadn't re-raised, I might have re-popped TLR here since he has been playing LAGG.

Ok Forty's been relatively quiet since his 25 SB hand, but I've seen him open raise 5/6 times already and I've yet to raise so I feel a raise will get some respect here. I could flat call but if I miss the flop which I will 33% of the time, I'm loathe to attack if he cont bets. Hence the raise which takes the pot.

Wow, that's quite some call with AT on the flop! I would have expected bonaparte to shove over preflop however.

Worth noting, these two are playing loose aggressive.

I did what I thought was a decent raise here, maybe a little too much. I was a little suprised when the BB raised, but my hand warrented a call. I put all in because I figured it would probably get me a fold, and if not I still had a pair of aces. In retrospect now, it was probably a bad idea to go all in as I faced a raise pre-flop which should mean BB has a really good hand.

To myself: Why is it that I get the EXACT same crap hand two times (almost) in a row? lol ... On the hand: WoW, they go all in with ATo ?!

This hand was also interesting because of the big bet sizing. I don't have much of a read but I don't want him to trying to steal my BB when I have ATo, which is like the nuts to me. So I think calling sucks because we can't be sure we were are at and if we are against AJ+ then weeeeee we are getting in a bad postflop position being OOP and if an A flops. Of course I yell at him in frustration because I don't like putting that much of my stack on the line with a hand I'm not sure about. After he calls my RR I think his range is actually like A9-AJ, 88-JJ, random crap. The flop isn't the greatest but I hit top pair in a reraised pot. That's usually very good. I check to induce a bunch of crap because if I bet this anyways I am committed and mostly no worse hands will call. I'm actually not pumped about calling this but I think he pushed pretty quickly, which usually means a bluff or a not so great hand because most people have to think about how to get their villain's stack when flopping monsters. I then proceed to say "wtf man" because my heart can't take my confusion before calling and I am just relieved.

Interesting this one. First off the Button raise of 5x is a lot, strikes me as weird as Todd pointed out, however I think saying that it's a half decent hand most of the time, blinds are still not worth worrying about, say 77-JJ; AQ/AJ/KQ etc bigger hands I feel he'll raise less, junk he'll fold. Anyways the raise from Todd is reasonable if he's playing the hand I'd raise. I think MJ's call oop gives off the vibe its more likely a 77-JJ type hand than high Ace kicker say AK. AK here I would move over the top of Todd's raise. Anyways I'm not overly excited about the shove with A10. I think the call meh, I'd need to run it through Pokerstove but again I think you can input the likes of middlish pairs into mjcongleton's range, that's certainly the type of hand I had him on. Interesting to see other takes on it as I'm no expert by any means

I wanted to isolate roofkid here with me KK. He probably watch the last hand and figured it wasn't worth the risk of an all in situation by some crazy better.

I'm getting a liiiittle more comfortable, I've got a lot of options post flop with this hand but I would not fare well if I only get an A pair going. I'm getting out here after being reraised since my hand is probably beat.

mj straight back on the attack, re-raising Roofkid's range who has been quiet so strikes me as a good pair/AQ/AK from mj.

Meh, maybe a bit of a misplaced steal from MP. Table had been tight so I thought I might get away with it, and I have big implied odds if somebody just calls and I flop a big hand. TLR could be restealing but not sure I want to go to the felt with JTs this early! Problem is that if I call here TLR is pot committed and will likely shove any flop.

Again, early blinds even if TLR didnt get feisty I wouldnt call this with crap. Not many hands Tai would raise from MP and fold like that... I wonder if TLR was playing Tai there, knowing Taipan would see that as a very strong move in this type of game.

Another early pos raise, Forty raises the SB and gets respect for a hand

I thought Tai can raise preflop with a pretty wide range, but he cannot call the reraise, even a small rerraise, becuase he will figure I am pretty much commited to the hand

This hand isn't interesting but I think it goes to show that you can basically bet ATC when you feel you have a good shot at the blinds. I had this feeling as everyone seemed pretty tight. You obviously can't do this much or recklessly.

AT UTG again this early not worth worrying about, imo

Fairly strong play from DH there with two limpers. AK or AQ?

I figured I'd limp preflop, as I expected a raise followed and I jumped out.

No way I'm calling this, even though this feels like a steal attempt.

What's this limping? Amazing I didn't remember any limp, anyways nice sized bet from th who again I'm putting on a pretty decent top 10% type hand

If it was folded to me I would raise KQs, but with UTG limper I decided to limp and try to see a cheap flop, with the raise I thought there is very little chance I am ahead, most likely flipping or dominated, I thought coming over the top is a bit too dangerous, especially if I run into AK, AA-QQ which are all in his range ofcourse, so I folded
