Where does the money come from in high stakes?

Seriously, I always check out the tables and see the same people are up a ridiculous amount of money. Where is it all coming from? Are there a bunch of rich people who like to blow 20k a night to the same people?

I just can't see how there are people that are constantly losing that much money. At the lower limits it makes sense, nobody is worried about losing 10 dollars...but 100k is a whoooole lot different.


Then again, maybe it is just coincidence and the same people I see every time are losing any time I'm not looking.

It's a combination of rich people and the money coming up through the stakes. Such as, a 600NL reg struggles to adapt to 1kNL, who in turn donates at 2KNL etc. etc. etc.

Guy Laliberte has apparently lost 6 million at Full Tilt last year.

Ya I forgot about people who are struggling to make there way back up.

I suppose the 'take-a-shot-at-glory' people who think they can make the millions contribute a bit as well.


I know there is one high roller, the guy who programmed Word originally for Microsoft. I've seen him throwing big bucks around the 10NL tables lol

marginal winners over marginal losers. When you see someone on a 5/10 table with $10k in chips, that is just someone on a heater. nobody can beat those stakes for a high win %. But if you you can beat it for about 1.5-2 ptbb then you are making serious bank.

NLHE has a pretty steady skill curve also some interesting match-up dynamics.

o People with lots of money who would be bored by smaller stakes
o Otherwise good plaers on tilt
o Predictable, readable players
o Reasonable players with leaks that don't get exploited at lower levels
o Players taking shots on scared money

there was a 5-10 reg on VCpoker a long time ago who was pretty good, but then when they made 10-20 he started losing heavily. It got so bad to the point where people in game were like "hey... maybe you should just quit bro.. for good".

a lot of it comes from tournament donators. Guys final tabling the sunday million or luckboxing a rebuy/109 freezeout and getting ambitious.

people taking shots at games and not realizing the nosebleed skill jumps between limits like 3-6, 5-10, 10-20, 10-25, 25-50
