Play money Vs. Real Money

Relative newbie here...

I've been playing PLAY money NLHE Sngs on Full Tilt for quite some time, just to practice some of my way way way basic skills before committing anything to low buy-in real money Sngs. I realize that playing with actual money does change much of the fundamental dynamics of the game (willingness to call absurd bets, etc.), but I was wondering if anyone who's been playing for money has any thoughts on how much it really matters on how the game is played? Do you think this affects how I've learned to play online nlhe?

Interested by any thoughts on the matter...

Using play money for anything other than learning the functions of the site and learning to read the boards for beginners is pretty much a waste of time. There is a significant difference in the play when there is real money involved.

You will find very little difference in the lowest stakes S&G's compared to the play money. Now that is basically a S&G phenomenon, since Ring and Tourney games are slightly different between the two.

Do not deposit under any circumstances on the account you have been using. I am sure you have never even heard of Rakeback, but it will matter in the future. Ask here first before depositing or signing up anywhere else in the future. It can be a costly mistake, long term.

What I end up doing is practicing bet reads... so I'll call something absurd that I never would with actual money just to see if my read was accurate.

Play money sit and go's are how I learned the basics as well. The play money cash games are a waste of time but I agree with Trainer the play money sit and go's can be helpful and do correspond with low buy in sit and go's.

I gave my sister $20 on stars so she could stop playing the play money and watched her play Real $1+$.20 S&G's. There was NO difference in the skill level or stupidity of the play. If you think there is then you are in for a world of tilt.

There very much is a difference. I'm not saying that the players are significantly better making advanced moves but you won't see players going all in as often with atc.

There is some difference when you're making the jump from play to $1. When you look back you're realize how tiny the jump was. The major difference I remember is only being able to fold into the money 1 out of 3 instead of 1 out of 2 kinda thing.

Another difference might be the play money buy-in. The one anyone can get to are retarded. If you move up to the higher playmoney buy-ins that you actually have to win to get to, the play is very similar.

I played some $1 a couple months ago when I was life tilting. I was going to push every hand. I got called on the first hand everytime. The very short thread is somewhere.

HOWEVER...

You will still see plenty of donks playing A-x, K-x, Q-x, people with no concept of position, lots and lots of calling stations, people who have no concept of betting, or implied or pot odds, most of the play makes no sense whatsoever 75% of the time.

I saw a first hand AI at an $11 buy sng last night (I was actually involved like a moron) where I had AK suited, UTG had JJ and Button had K9 offsuit and the flop came out flushy for me...I pushed JJ's pushed and K9 pushed when he paired his 9...it was a pretty horrible play by me but yea...this kind of stuff happens ALL the time...especially late at night.

However if you do not consistantly beat the play money Sng then get better before depositing any money.

I would suggest making your first deposit on stars and not on FT, I think stars has a good first deposit bonus that is much more easily cleared then the FT one

Hi, I Just Started Playing Too... I Had Never Realy Played Much When I Got The Software From Poker Stars, And i Gave It About A Day Before Deciding To Pay $20 For Real Money Games... I Still Play With Play Money, But Mainley When Im Losing... I Have Noticed A Difference, That Being That Once I Play For Real Money, People Will Fold A Lot More, And I DO Mean A Lot! ''Pre-Flop'' If You Have Got A Half Good Hand Like KT Off Suit, I Recomend Going In With 10 Cents Or 5 Times The Big Blind... The Reason For This Is This Small Amount Will Actualy Make People Fold, Giving Your KT A Better Chance Of Wining And Less Chances Of Losing To A K6 Off Suit Cause You Floped 2 6's, All You Need Is For 1 Person To Call You, And Even If You Only Steal The Blinds, Thats Still Good Depending On Your Hand...
