Default official hockey playoffs 2007 thread

    STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS TIME!

I know there aren't THAT many hockey fans here and that this thread will get no posts, but I'm making a thread anyway. I can't believe both Toronto AND Montreal missed, has this ever happened in the history of the NHL? The Islanders game was pretty wild, I can't believe the Devils scored with less than a second left. The Leafs must have been at home shitting themselves ...

    Mwahahaha.

Anyway, the Canucks are playing the Stars. Go Luongo! I'm sooo excited, it's so awesome. We missed the playoffs last year and I was really disappointed, so they better win at least a round this year. The city is so pumped for this. Vancouver is the definitely the best NHL hockey city in the world!

I'm going to games 1 and 2 and 7 (if it gets that far) of the first round thanks to a good friend. Unless you're rich and/or have seasons tickets, getting playoff tickets is nearly impossible here if you don't have a hook-up. I am going to need to win an MTT or something so that I can buy tickets for the semis (cause we're gonna kill the Stars dammit ... hopefully Modano breaks a leg or something).

    Who are you cheering for?

    Let's go Rangers.

Gabe: Hockey is the best sport out there. Cerebral qualities of baseball, athleticism of basketball, physicality of football. Plus its on ice. Holla.

Court: Realistically, how well do you think the canucks will do against the Stars. Im not a fan of either team, but the stars are pretty damn good season. In any division other than the pacific they would be second at worst and a very likely first (not even based on points, just on play). Can Vancouver do it?

    GOO Sharks.

If Modano somehow breaks a limb, Canucks will win. Otherwise, I think it's 50/50 ... They both have good goaltending (woooo Luongo rules) and they're both right up there for few goals against (it's gonna be a low scoring series for sure), so I dunno ... I think someone should just break Modano's legs. Honestly though, I think I'd rather play Dallas rather than anyone else in the Western Conference. Dallas is good, but everyone else is really scary too ...

    Question:

Where the hell are the avalanche? They're like the only team I root for in the NHL (and no I don't pay that much attention).

That, and well, I'm not supposed to like any teams from Dallas, being from Houston and all. So booh Stars?

Colorado sucked this year. They made a run for the last spot late but they couldn't catch up to Calgary. NW division was hard though, I'll give them that. Pretty tough to make the playoffs when the Canucks, Wild, and Flames are all in the same division as you are (and they all make the cut).

Canucks FTW and not just because they're my team. They were the hottest team in the NHL post Christmas. And they never fail to kick it up a high level in the playoffs. The only thing that stopped them before was poor playoff goal tending.

PLUS, did you see Naslund in the past couple games? Not huge results showing yet, but he was heating up into playoff mode.

The team I really fear though is Detroit, they basically live in the playoffs and Bertuzzi is a wrecking machine in the playoffs.

Man I get so excited this time of year! Wednesday is so far away!

GO HABS GO!!!! Oh yeah I forgot they DONKED the last two games in preference of golf.

Pitsburgh/Ottawa is probably the best series in the East. Go Pens.

Out Ouest, Go Canucks (for Luongo, MTL boy) and go flames
  21. #21
Sens all the way, the pens are an exciting team to watch but other than roberts almost completely new to the playoffs. The Sens havent fared to well in their playoff history but have consistantly made the playoffs the last like 5 years, topping or near topping the East and With heatly, alfredsson, spezza killing it this year I think they have the experience to run deep in the playoffs.

As for the Avs and stars, that will be an exciting matchup to watch as well, Luongo is incredible and vancouver offence seems to be streaky, if the Sedin twins step up, specifically daniel, and naslund wakes up they will give a run for their money.

If I had to put money on any team tho, it would be on buffalo for obvious reasons. Finally getting healthy and sporting the best record and most wins this season makes them a heavy favorite. And the first round matchup against a cinderalla entry by the islanders is exactly what they need to start their playoffs running. I think they'll steamroll the isles and it will just add to their confidence.

This is why soccer in Europe is a die hard sport all year round. The EPL championship is solely based on the season and points accumulation. Therefore, every game in the season matters. However, your finish in that season also determines entry into the champions league (I think it's top 4 in EPL) which IMO is the greatest tournament/playoffs out there. Imagine 10 worldwide NFLs whose top teams play each other for the championship. They also have two cups in england which affords even more playoff fun.

I think American sports, baseball in particular but also hockey and basketball (I think football has such a short season that it doesn't apply) are doing it all wrong in the sense that all the season is for is making it to the playoffs.

HABS is short for "les habitants", which comes from the French settlers that established themselves in Quebec...

    MVP!

Canucks in 6!! I think Vancouver matches up very well against the stars, much better than the sharks or wild at least. Getting through the west will be retarded hard. Their chances rest pretty much solely on Luongo, and without him stealing a couple games it'll be tough for them to get through. In any case, GET YOUR WHITE TOWELS OUT!!

  33. #33
the canucks entire season has basically rested entirely on Luongo, which is the way it should be when you have the best goaltender in the league/world.

Given canucks fans history with goalies, I half expected them to be booing luongo halfway thru the season, but I guess he is so good that even they can't get on his case.

Haven't been able to see the last few weeks worth of games for Vancouver, but unless Naslund starts to play (or has already started) then they are in trouble. If it weren't for the Sedins the canucks would have had a hard time making the playoffs. And the stars will do a pretty damn good job shutting down 1 vancouver line, so the others will have to contribute a lot.

The biggest hole for vancouver is going to be the lack of depth on defence. If (and when) salo goes down with an injury they are in trouble. If the defence can stay healthy then the canucks could go far.

I think Cowen's the only one with any energy at this point. Everyone else is pretty much falling over themselves aside from the once a shift spurt.

They have energy because after every regular season game (or at least home games) they spend extra time riding a stationary bike.

I have Ottawa winning the cup in my pool. I think they play San Jose in the final. The only thing that scares me about Ottawa is Ray Emery, he's still wet behind the ears. San Jose has it all - size, skill, depth, and solid goaltending. Both teams got off to a good start last night. Does anyone play online poker while watching the game(s)? I was on Pokerroom last night, my attention was nonexistent. lol

    Go Sens!

Longest. Game. Ever. I can't believe I watched the whole game. Sedin's really started to own though in overtime. I was thinking that if they didn't score, it was going to go on forever. Nobody else looked dangerous, and both goalies looked flawless in OT.

Why aren't the games being televised?

Is it bad if I think I'd get the same utility from watching NFL draft talk as I would the NHL playoffs? I need a team to root for.

Plus, WHAT CHANNEL ARE THEY ON? I've heard so many good things about the intensity and sheer brilliance of the NHL playoffs. I want to experience it.

I'm in AUSTIN. We have different channels. I checked tvguide.com and there are no hockey games showing here.

    Thanks for trying though.

The goalies looked flawless because they could see all the shots and there was nothing tricky about almost all of them in OT.

I went to the game last night and had to leave after the second OT because I took my step dad and he works at 6 am every morning. I went home and watched the rest on TV ...

The Canucks were horrible. Dallas had the edge almost all night and Vancouver is lucky the game wasn't over in the third period. They ran around so badly in their own zone (in the third) and it was so obvious how little playoff experience they have. Dallas just out-skated and out-hit them all night (except in the first and the overtimes ... they were probably equal in those periods).

Anyway, if the Canucks don't change a little something, they're gonna lose the series for sure. We have a good coach though, so I think we'll be better in game 2. I hope so, at least.

FWIW, we played better in game 2. We hit a post later in the game that would have changed everything if it had gone in, but it didn't.

Neither team really had any great chances. Canucks defensive coverage was fucking terrible for both goals, Stars were wide open both times. That's it really ... other than that, it was a pretty meh game (I went last night, too).

I don't have tickets for game 5, but I do have tickets to game 7 if it gets that far.

    Bleh.

Due to the mavs game today the ice tomorrow will likely be 'quicksand'. Huge advantage for the canucks, I think, with their speedy guys out.

    ducks for the cup.

Ive stuck my $100 on em.

canucks wont win if they get just one injury. Stars wont win with turco in the net. Saying that, luongo could be the canucks saving grace but they need to get past anaheim and San jose. I never like the sharks but they always seem to do it in the post season.

Im going for rangers and pittsburgh for the east, crosby ftw.

That chick that sings the anthem at the Detroit is so amazingly hot. I think her name's Karen Newman. I need to take a shower after watching that.

Does anyone wanna bet that Vancouver will choke as usual and lose the series on Monday?

Come on, I'll go $100 in favor of Dallas winning.

I have tickets for game 7.
