hi, i have a very general question.

what are the chances of a person who plays 10NL with a BR of $100 (post bonuses etc...) not going bust if they have just started?

I know its recommended that it be 15-30 buy-ins or even higher, but as a starting BR is it do-able?

not really, you need 200 at least

With 100 you may be able to play small stakes SNGs and build a bankroll.

Try a Boss media site (see Easy's Bonus Whoring Guide). You can deposit $100 and clear a $100 bonus at 10NL at some of them (like this one).

That's how I started. I lost $20-30 before I cleared the first 250 raked hands ($25 bonus). Then I broke even for ~300 hands, then finished fairly strong (10bb/100). If you get out with $200 that should solve your BR issue.

If you follow the 19 hands thingy you should be fine.

i think its easier at 10NL - Yes, you should have an adequate bankroll, but 10 buy ins is enough for that low of level i think - a competent player should do just fine at 10nl with 10 buy ins...I wouldn't move up though until you have the recommended buy ins for 25nl - i learned that the hard way

let me clarify this a bit - with 10 buy ins at 25NL I have always found i'm not playing my best poker - I used to sit with $200 or so at 25NL and worry about calling all ins, or i'd buy in short etc...What I have found the buy in rules really help in me feeling comfortable playing the game - With $100 I am very comfortable playing 10NL - I make the right plays, i don't play scared, i don't start worrying about every little dime - I just play poker - So that is why i think if YOU are comfortable playing with 10 buy ins, you should be fine - when you have a shorter BR than what is recommended, you tend to play scared poker - That is why I now stick to the BR rules - With plenty of buy ins, I make the right moves instead of worrying about every little $$ out there....

id be perfectly happy with 10 buyins at 10NL now but im happy with my game.

I wouldnt recommend a beginner trying it with just 10 buyins. Take your $100 and play 2NL until you are happy. Thats easily enough to survive learning. After a couple of weeks you can probably move up to 10NL and be pretty comfortable.

How about clearing some online blackjack bonuses to get a bigger roll?

Theres loads of sites you could do this on, but one that springs to mind is www.goldenpalace.com , this has a 300% up to $300 bonus if you deposit with neteller. Once this is cleared you're looking at at least $350 - so you could take your original $100 back and still have the 25 buy-ins.

i'd say you have a 50% chance of going bust with that br and limits for a beginner
if you are a tight, smart and disciplined player you might make it
i reccommend 2NL and 5NL tables to get your feet wet
also check out the bonus mentioned above(boss)

trev (or anyone else), can you confirm the Golden Palace bonus is worth doing? 20 x deposit+bonus needs to be wagered - that's quite a lot, and I'd just like someone to do the maths for me before I take it on.

Biondino I highly recommend Golden Palace, yes it's alot of money to wager but in terms of profit for your time it's well worth it. I played triple handed with 5 dollar bets per hand, it took I would guess around 5hrs of play to clear and I left with over $500 (obviously I must have got lucky along the way). There are other sites with easier to clear bonuses, but nowhere near 300%. If you can deposit with a credit/debit card 888.com is good, this has 100% up to $200 and you only need to bet 4k to clear it, you have to bet a higher amount if you use neteller tho.

I could play NL10, starting with $100, and I'd say the chances that I eventually go bust on that roll are microscopic.

For a beginning player, it's likely they will lose that money.

Probably be better off playing 2NL until you're comfortable playing, then play 5NL, etc. It kinda feels like you aren't getting anywhere, but it's a time investment that's well worth it.

I wonder what kind of guide could be written for a new player wanting to play NLHE cash games online with like a $100 starting bankroll, as far as getting PT through one of the free offers, where to play, easy bonuses, etc.

That'd be a great idea for a guide. I'd be more than happy making a contribution regarding this. I've checked out every bonus and room review on FTR, and tried out each one at least to see the interface... and have gone from $50 to $150 in a week... if i can keep it up i'll pop in my 2c worth.
