Default How not to pay off a higher flush

This has happened to me a couple times recently.

I'm only asking about situations where you and the villian have the same number of pocket cards in the suit in question, btw.

Here are the hands. The second one I realized I should have put him on AK or pocket queens (with a flush draw).

    1. On the turn is that an overbet? By my count the pot is about $1.25-rake, I dont mind a bet here, but Id make it closer to $1, the board is paired now though, so I wouldnt hate a check, especially OOP when somebody could have been slowplaying a set on the flop. Not something you are too worried about, but its definitely a possibility. On the river you make the 2nd nut flush, a full house isnt too likely so Id bet for value here. We are only realistically beat by a higher flush or maybe something like Q9, but thats not too likely. Reads are important here, how has the villain played before? Against most I think this is a call, but I think its fairly thin.

    2. Thats a really sketchy flop, I probably cbet this to protect my hand probably a little more though [closer to $4] to make drawing to a flush or a straight a bigger mistake. The turn Im not too sure about though, villain could just be betting because he is last to act, but I dont think most would do that on this board. What hands preflop would have a worse club than us and play the hand this way? TT and 88 would raise somewhere in there, 99 is possible, but I really dont think somebody is betting a worse flush than that in a multiway pot. Any reads? What do people think of a bet/fold line on the turn? As played I call the river.

Was there any way the 1st game could be prevented? I think u played that perfectly and just were unlucky , predictions on higher flushes are hard when u have the 2nd best nut flush.

both of those are examples of odd hands that you were in for many reason - not just the flush. In those instances it's hard not to play them out. You opponents made value bets and you called them down.

Those hands are just poker. My answer to your question though is not to play for the flush with what I call jack-on hands (jxs) - this is as opposed to jackoff hands (jxo).

But these hands are just poker. You played them fine.
