    Default Bankroll Management

Last year when I was playing online poker, I started with a BR of $50, and made it up to $400. I started playing above my stakes, and ended up losing everything by $8.00. This year, I'm trying again, and I'd like to pay more attention to maintaining a bankroll, rather than building one as quickly as possible.

I've read a few different articles on the subject, but there seems to be some conflicting/different "standards," and there are some points need some clarification on. Some articles say 20x-30x the buy-in. Some say anywhere from 300BBs to 2000BBs.

What rules do you follow when managing your money? When articles say 20x buy-ins, is it the max buy-in for those stakes, the minimum buy-in, or whatever you regularly buy in for?

I rarely buy in for the max, but should I still wait until I have 20x the max before I move up to a higher stake?

A standard buy in is 100 big blinds. When you see BBs mentioned it is referring to limit poker.

When articles/posters refer to the "buy-in", they mean a full/max buy-in (which is what most regularly buy in for). 20-30x full buy-ins seems to be the standard recommendation. For example, if you were playing .50 $1 blinds (aka 100NL), it would be recommended to have anywhere from $2000 to $3000. When you have 20-30x the max for the stakes you want to move up to, then you go for it. So in the previous example, you'd probably move up to $1 $2 blinds (aka $200NL) between $4000 and $6000.

Some people prefer to have more buy-ins, and others are fine with less. If 20x works for you, go with that. If you prefer 30x (or higher), that's fine too. It's all about what you're comfortable with.

Thank you. That is exactly what I was trying to get clarified.

Edit: Good god! That means I need to turn this $8.00 into $500.00 just to move up to .10/.25 ($25NL). That's gonna test my willpower...

I've done it, and I'm not the only one.
