Usually a great way to get stacked. Any particular reason you decided to get cute?

I'm not calling a large 3-bet on the river. MP wasn't respecting my countinuation bets, often coming over the top of them. I was trying to induce him to do it on the flop. It didn't happen so I checked the turn hoping he would take a stab at it on the river which he did. He was doing this a lot and I hoped a raise on the river would slow him down in the future. He was relatively tight PF and I hadn't seen him raise with anything creative like mid connectors off the button, so I put him on either overs or a mid PP.

Given his range I thought it was relatively safe to let him have a free card and raise if he led out on the river. If he had overs he was drawing dead and if he didn't already have a set then he was drawing very slim. If he already had a set I probably would've lost the same amount of money anyways, if not more, had I bet the pot on the flop, was smooth called, bet the turn and was raised.

Playing the hand the way I did, I don't think he'd re-raise me on the river with anything less than a set and he'd likely push at that point. I wouldn't have any problem folding if he did, just as I wouldn't had I played it straight forward and was check-raised AI on the turn.

Nh. I like your thinking, but I think your bet sizes definitely need to be bigger. Preflop I pop it up to $10. If he's gonna go set hunting, then he'll have to pay more than $3. Flop is interesting. I would either bet out $15 or so, or just check behind. If you bet the flop, then I like checking behind on the turn, and if you checked the flop, then bet the turn. I lean towards the bet flop/check turn line tho. And of course hammer/push the river if he checks. Then again you could just drop the hammer on every street, but if villian has a brain he is not taking his PP past the turn.

Also, what is your range for reraising a 3xbb opener? Is villian aware of this?

I tried a similar play against an aggressive player. He could have anything here preflop / flop. The board pair made me more inclined to raise the river.

If he re-raises the river, do you pay off a 5?

You got to hammer it here, getting sucked out on given the pot size and money behind is going to hurt too much.

I don't think he can reraise without a full house, so I probably fold if he reraises. I was only raising so he'd make a crying call with top pair or a counterfeited two pair.
