I had just joined the table, but I had not played a hand to this point after about an orbit or two. I popped it up after one limper and he called, he bet out pot immediately on the flop which I read as weakness. If he had a set or two pair he would not have played it that fast, same with a straight. I put him on a pocket pair and that he was making a play hoping I had two high cards and missed the flop. I've made this play a few times before (with and without the goods) against callers who immediately bet out big on the flop. They put me on a big pair and lay their hands down almost every time I do it. I also had overcards in case he called, so I figure to have some outs if he calls.

    Thoughts?

your cards had nothing to do with why this worked, it was your position and the ho-hum flop. it looks like you could have made the same play w/ any two cards here, as you suggest you have done in the past. nice bet.
In answer to your question... it depends...

Yes great play, there is really no way he can call this. I would suggest actually not raising that much as it suggests your hand is at least volitaile (A8, 99, TT) and then he could call your all in with a hand such as JJ, TT. But if you raise to something like 6.50, i think I could put you on hands like AA KK or QQ, or a flopped set.
Just utter critiquing however your play is fine. It always is going to look like you're protecting against a draw here so there is no way he's calling without AA, KK, or a set

When I make the play he did you can expect a monster. I want you to raise. Be careful coming over the top like that.

When I'm up against a tricky opponent I won't nessicarily assume that they are betting without a hand, but I think at 25 NL - 50 NL the players there are relatively predictable and I figure them all to be weak players until proven otherwise.

Be weary of the downward spiral.
It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?
