First off - great site, been reading the posts for a while now, really like it, so i just about felt safe to post my lame efforts here...

Anyway, was after some advice - recently switched from Limit to N/L as Limit was quite dull etc... have been doing boringly OK at Limits and fancied a prolonged run at the N/L tables (this could be wishfull thinking!)

So here, if you have the time could you please slate my play (i've deleted the names as i don't want my fishy identity available for the taking...) - i posted this in Beginner's as this is hardly 'advanced' i know. I'd been mainly folding upto now as had real cack hands, and to be honest The Simpsons was on (double bill!!) so i wasn't paying proper attention to the styles of my opponents (beer+poker+TV=£0 for Stupidfish )

I don't really like Big Slick to be honest (so certainly wouldn't fall in love with it), but should I:
- have raised more preflop
- or have been a bit more suspicious of the possible flush
- gone outside instead, as it was sunny???
- helped an old lady over the road, and taken her purse???

I don't like AK out of position like that. Either raise it more preflop or just call. I prefer just calling and seeing what the flop brings.

The bet on the flop wasn't very good. Either check it or make a real bet. $3 into an $8 pot is not enough. The guy was correct to call with his flush draw.

Once the flush hits you have got to be worried. Even though you hit your hand, buddy is representing a flush draw and has now hit the flush. I'd be more inclined to check here. A bet isn't a horrible play though. Once he calls though you have to hit the brakes. Him just smooth calling should set off warning bells in your head. I would just hope to check it down on the river and if he put me all in 6 into a 20 pot I might fold I might call depending on the player. Definitely lean towards fold though. Especially after the smooth call on 4th.

Here's how I would have played the hand:

Preflop: Call. I have a good hand but I'm out of position. I want to hit a flop.
Flop: Check/Fold. Nothing there, not much invested in the pot, just leave it.

thanks for your opinions, i know you could have just smacked me round the head for those moves, so it's very much appreciated.

i won't plague you guys with all my bad hands but i really wanted someone to have a go at this one. officially i blame homer simpson though. and those goddam old ladies.

evman150 summed it up pretty good.

With a raise and two callers preflop when you are out of position you either want to call (and either the flop hits you or you fold) or to raise to naarow the playfield. Raising 1.25 to a 2.50 pot is too weak.
Once you had 3 callers and the flop missed you I would be very careful on the flop, chances are someone has beaten you, I would probably check the flop.
If your intention was to buy the pot at the flop then you should raise at least the size of the pot, which would practically put you all in.
However with the stack size you have I am not sure even an all-in would buy you the pot

Lets look at the good and the bad.

The good:
You have AKs

The bad:
You are on the BB
You have someone raising from first position
You reraised
You bet a complete miss flop.

First off, only re-raise with AKs in position. You should have just called. When the flop came blanks, you really had nothing. If you had just called you could check/fold and be done with the hand down .75$. Without position it is hard to know what the other player has, which is very important. You bet the whole way so even though he has the nuts, he never had to bet or raise. This is why position is so important.

but Stupidfish has resolved not to play poker after any beer, no matter how tasty and refreshing they might be...
