I get where you're coming from about only having limited time to play, but one of the best things for my bankroll was realising that not playing is more EV than playing when my head isnt right just because its the only time I have to play.

Walk away and come back while you still have a roll

Your $2K your talking about is my whole fucking BR. Suck it up. Take a fucking break. Your right where I was 6 months ago mentally and there is another side to this. Take a break, get your head on str8 and calm down.

Ok a shitload of thanks to everyone who has helped me. I am going to watch some videos at Stox from Jared Tendler and just try to focus on controlling my tilt for now. ISF has reassured me that he believed I was playing well in our sessions and that I definitely have what it takes to win at the level. I am going to watch the vids, play 50NL, report back on what I feel like I did well/bad and see if my luck changes. I plan to move back up soon. As for NOW, no bankroll flipping. Tbh, I asked some high stakes regs today if they'd flip and they backed out and am thankful.

Don't play for a couple of days.
Then play 50nl for $750 - it's a discipline thing and what i've been doing this month (except for more than $750 )
Don't play when your headspace is bad.
Beats happen, sucks that they happened as you moved up.
Don't try to change too many things at once.
    Keep FPS to a minimum.
    Don't get all degenerate.
Post hands for discussion and without results.
Move back up when you're ready.
    Win.

I still disagree with moving back down to 50nl. Its not a discipline thing for kmind daven, he's constantly moving back down to 50nl. He's only down like 3 buyins at 50nl this month, the 24 buyins he talks about is lifetime. This is just short term variance and some serious tilt.

I still think your serious poker should be at 100nl. You have to start thinking of yourself as a 100nl reg, not a 50nl player playing out of your depth. If you lack confidence or dont feel up to playing your A game, then donk around at 2nl or play a micro tourney or another game or something. This is your chance to beat 100nl and become a reg there and move towards 200nl.

Again though, if you're not right, dont play. Go do fun stuff and come back when you can play your best.

focusing on beats. The time it takes to post those three hands is the time it would take to properly review 1 or 2 hands that you could probably play better. Or read some useful stuff.

    I suggest reading soupie's tourney guide, points 30, 31, 38, 46, 47, 50, 52, 54.

also remember that if you're 20buyins behind AIEV over 40k hands then you should be at least breakeven over that period.
    Best of luck.

    True.

Also, I had a nightmare of me miss-clicking and folding huge hands. 95% positive this was just a dream but am checking HEM now.

Also, I finished the day down $15 (well, $28 as I flipped my last $13 on PS) after those beats so I can't complain.

Ok so the last 2 hands were part of the -$15 day which is actually today (2 days ago I won $200). I also lost a 50% in a 100bb total pot today without me sucking out on anyone. So that plus the last 2 hands have still yielded me a +3 buyin day at 50NL. Sucks it's at 50NL but I am still happy. Could have easily been a +5 day at least. I also have played over 4k hands the past 2 days which I am proud of but it's mainly at 50NL as opposed to 100NL. I have found I can 9 table 50NL with ease without FT Shortcuts or any scripts tbh.

Onto my play. I felt like I made some really nice calls and double barrelled quite well as it's something I used to rarely do. I also completed my first ever triple barrel bluff to success. I'm really excited about all this as I think I'm making a lot better reads. Also, my cbetting game has gotten a lot better. I'm also making better reads on when to float/bluff raise/just fold my air which helps out a ton. I'm REALLY hoping I can get back to 100NL and run good tomorrow or whenever I try again as I really do (knock on wood) think ISF's coaching is kicking in. We're scheduled to have a final 2hr session tomorrow or Wed. Hope it goes well.

So I told myself I'd win 8 buyins from now until the end of the month. Played 2k hands today and down 4 buyins. Running extremely horrible like normal. Only got a stack once and I played it very poorly. I hit 3 sets, 2 were top sets as the PFR on dry boards and got folds. The 3rd was in a multiway pot and a donk got there after calling a huge bet so I lost a good chunk on that. I lost KK < AA preflop. I lost vs. 82s against a reg. when I raised preflop. I lost a big multiway pot barely trailing in equity. AA was definitely a loser. KK too.

I also played some hands poorly. The hands posted in the shorthanded forum were just 3 hands but would have helped a lot. The second one was the one I won my stack.

Just getting frustrated. Like seriously the shit I see is ridiculous. Players will make HUGE mistakes and still win. Just annoying. And I'm not really buying the whole "good, the more mistakes by them, the more you win" because I haven't seen it much really. I do bad, they do worse, they win.

Dont set yourself money targets with deadlines, just aim to play good poker every time you sit down to play.

Sounds a lot like tilt in the last post. Yeah its irritating that people can play bad and still win, but thats over a small sample. The whole point of playing well is to win over the long term. The hands you posted in the SHNL forum where pretty bad, and you were obviously tilting in some way at the time you played them. You really need to start (return to) planning your hands. You need to have reasons for betting, reasons for calling, reasons for raising, etc. Pre-flop and on the flop especially, you should be planning where the profit from the hand is going to come from, rather than just reacting to stuff.

Been ages since you did a vid, maybe go back to recording yourself playing regularly. Even if you dont publish any, treat them like you might, and play like you're going to need to explain what you're doing and why you're doing it.

True. Honestly, the hands posted in the short-handed forum WERE thought out. That's a problem. I just put them on weird draws and only thought on some streets they would continue or based on X bet sizing they'd have a draw still etc. Maybe I'll post a video.

Also, I didn't mean just this session players playing worse I'm talking about my whole career.

We should do another session sometime if you want/can. I still have an hour with ISF plus another with alexos so hopefully they can find some weird leaks but mehhhhh. ISF has taught me some leaks that I have already gotten better at so it's just annoying to continually find shitty spots. I don't really have too much hope for my career and it just sucks.

I dunno, I keep watching your vids/sweating/reading hands, and overall I cant find any ongoing problems with your game. Tbh I've always considered you at least as good if not better than I am. You do seem to hit more than your share of run bad, so that could be it. You post a lot of hands that are played fine v's ranges and you just continually hit the top of it. Whether thats just exagerated because you post so many of them, or if you run into that a lot more than usual I dont know. I think sometimes you should think a little harder about spots, but thats usually just isolated hands rather than an ongoing issue. My concern would be that after you have some run bad maybe you tilt? Exaserbating run bad with play bad is a recipe for disaster. Also much as you keep posting when you've had losing/bad sessions, it seems to me that you're still consistantly winning on a month to month basis which shouldnt be ignored when you're considering the hope for your career.

I'm pretty busy atm and away this weekend. Got to try to catch up with Renton for the coaching session from his Digest comp soon. I'll be around though, jump on msn when you're available and we'll see if we can catch up and do something.

  21. #921
I'd really like to sweat you some time kmind if you're up for it. I want to see how you're dealing with bad beats/coolers and also discuss some hands. The main reason I want to though is because I think I have poor 6max preflop fundamentals (I play too tight) and I think you probably have a much better grasp on them than I do.

Will do for sure. I think I handle bad beats and coolers actually quite well in game but it does force me to quit my sessions sooner and get to this blog. I really do not intend to post just beats and shit in this blog but literally all month besides a sweat with bjsaust it has been nothing but shitty. I'm going to go for 1400 more hands today to get to 25k on the month but I will most likely stop short again if it continues to just be dumb. Next month literally is mostly 100NL so this hasn't been a great time to ruin my confidence.

Also, I guess it doesn't matter, but when I run "good" it means me winning a flip or two. When I run bad, it means me losing those 70%ers+. I should be happy with this and to an extent I am but on one side it makes it that much more frustrating.

There's my month. I could post a ton of coolers but I don't want to unless you want them. I finished down 5 buyins in EV. I have one more hour of coaching with ISF left and then afterwards I will play 100NL for 15k hands at least, hoping it's much more. Alexos has offered to sweat me. Ian just now (Da GOAT). Bjsaust sweated me last month for a 2 buyin win at 100NL. Para and I are doing a sweat Sunday. I can't thank you guys enough! My 400NL FR friend is offering to coach me long term as well at both 6max and FR in which I'll profit share with him for a good bit but at a sick price. He's tcblade's protege/good friend IRL as well as Matt Probability's good friend. We met at 25NL and one of us has gone to win probably 50k in profits, including not playing for like a few months at all. I won't say which one. FFS ISF was at 50NL when I played in those games. This is was tilts me to no end. Everyone is either winning at stakes 4 times as high as me or winning more money than I could EVER imagine. This has to make me think something's wrong with me. I feel like I am learning a shit ton and the mistakes I do still have aren't too bad at all but the coolers are just overwhelming me. I mean ffs I was playing variance free poker for at least 2 months straight before last month. I know I can do it.
  26. #926
Blaah kmizzle! Variance sucks so hard sometimes dude.. trust me I know how you feel. Things will turn, lots of good players know you got the skills so it will all come together!

Thanks man! Lots of good AND bad (ie me) players know you can dominate next month just get your red line down!

Next month I am thinking I either don't check my BR for like two weeks and/or don't check my EV all month and/or don't post ONE thing about running bad. Thoughts? Any other ideas to get me focused on crushing?

Yay. But seriously I'm not mad. That's a lie but I'm ok. Literally 3rd hand back to playing in 2 days. Anyways, I plan on putting people on a range on EVERY street. I also plan on studying daily in the mornings at least. For an hour minimum. Every single move of mine will be with a full purpose.

56 hand, turn bet probably doesnt have much value at all, and you're better off checking back turn and re-eval river. Def bet if he checks to you on turn.

As played, fold to turn c/r and def fold river.

Not sure anymore. Just got coolered while typing this for another 200bb pot. I reallllly think some of those tilt videos need to be watched. I'm literally sweating from being so frustrated of this crap. EVERY single draw/good card in their range gets there it's insane. AA literally getting all folds or losing to a suckout postflop against a donk. It seems like there really is no end but I have faith and once it does end I'll be a muuuuch better player for it.

Def. agree with c/r river in AQ hand.

Down 2 buyins on the day as well as the month. I'm really tired physically and mentally. As in I didn't sleep at all last night and haven't really slept in over a week and a half. I have had a twitch in my eye literally 24/7 since last Friday. My family and gf have noticed it. I'm also having personal problems with something that's been on my mind a lot. A combination of running worse than ever and my personal life has just equated to insomnia. During the day, I've become very lethargic and have become very short tempered when it comes to talking to anyone. Either irl or on AIM/MSN (sorry). Not quite sure how to stop it but it will be stopped. My gf is driving down today to visit me and we should be together for a little bit so I'll probably avoid poker at all costs for a couple of days.

What's bugging me the most by far is that I am learning so much and cannot wait to use the better player in me to only get shitted on and completely doubt everything. I forgot what it's like to win. I honestly have. I'm basically "owned" (in a good way though) by a couple of players coaching me for awhile and it's just so frustrating having them watch me and just say "std" or receiving HH and saying "std". They can't really see many big leaks. I know I don't play that great at all but like I see completely obvious, HUGE leaks at my stakes and it's just getting ridiculous. They'll win, I won't. Not even in hands against me. I'll watch them do the stupidest things against each other but no problem, they're a winner in the long run.

So, yeah, I guess to try to help myself I am going to complete some range exercises for myself and for one of my coaches in which he'll give me feedback on. I'm really hoping it helps and I can learn some things. I'm studying a lot with videos/articles/HEM review and stuff like that too. I have to start my 15k hands at 100NL run soon and I just have no confidence. It should be interesting. I guess now I don't really care about losing a lot because I'm still in the mind frame of wanting to flip $2k. I mean I probably won't flip but I've become numb to everything. Time to stop staying afloat and either sink or swim.

For what it's worth, I'm a noob. But here's my thoughts, feel free to ignore them.

I don't know exactly what you're going through, because I've never been through such a bad run, so you might think I have no idea what I'm talking about (and you'd be right) but my advice is more general than that.

Dude, it sucks to hear it, but you can't let poker affect you like this. It's a vicious circle. You let it affect you this badly it affects your life, and when you're not good in life you will be on permanent tilt. So you're on permanent tilt so you lose at poker (and it doesn't help that you've been having bad luck), which pisses you off and then affects your life. Which then... well, you get the point.

My advice: take an extended break from poker and just chill for a while, read some poker books (I highly suggest The Poker Mindset, if you haven't read it, which by your post I doubt you have), try learning/playing PLO or some other variant and play at uber small stakes for shits and giggles. Just get away from it man, come back refreshed and knowing that you're going to make the best play that you know how to do on every single hand - and anything else is irrelevant, the results of that hand, the results of that session, or the results of the past week.

Also, going into 100NL, a stake harder than what you're currently playing, with the mind frame of wanting to flip 2,000$ is silly. You need to be risk neutral - that is, neither wanting to gamble, nor scared to do it - at poker to win.

Anyways, yeah. Good luck man, I really hope this turns around for you. You know you have an edge over the players at your stake, so you will turn it around. It's just a matter of time and playing the best you can, all the time.

Stop playing poker until you get your personal stuff sorted out. Start exercising regularly, and eating healthy. Have fun and laugh with friends. The rest will take care of itself.

Gobbatino - thanks man. Didn't want you to think your post went unnoticed. I think the plan for now is to take an indefinite break.

As for the last hand - I did shove here thinking he bet/calls with KJ or KT or even AK. Q9 raises me on the flop and AQ is a cooler? PLEASE tell me AQ is a cooler there . I finished down 2 buyins including winning a 200bb+ pot with 44 on a 447 board to 77. That doesn't make me happy.

I am going to try a new approach to things. I made need to make a prop bet and I am not really sure what it will include but I want to read and reread a few articles (every day/other day) as well as write in-depth dissections of a certain amount of hands (per day/month), write a theory article, watch certain poker videos, specifically Jared Tendler videos at Stox and not show any signs of tilt or whine about anything. That does not discount posting hands for discussion that may seem standard though and were coolers. I'd love to post like 5 hands a week that I went in-depth on here and generate good discussion.

I'm going to celebrate 4 months tomorrow with my gf. Gnight. Hi page 20. Shit, was it page 25 I said it would mean "I made it"?

Hey man I read through your blog quite often but never really find anything to say, guess you could say I just lurk around.

You mention you seem to struggle with tilt/spew etc, and I do at times pretty badly myself. Breaks and that help of course, as does exercise/eating good/spending time with family etc. But one thing that really helped me alot though was reading up on psychology more and understanding how our brains work. Also reading some psychology books that are poker related will definately increase your awareness about these things. I know it helped me alot, and although I can't really gaurantee it'll help you, I think it will at least have some sort of positive impact on your game. I have a couple recommendations so if you're interested in some reading let me know.

I can remember one time I was so frustrated I ended up dropping down 2 levels below where I normally grinded after taking 5 days off. But the readings (although long), have definately helped somehow indirectly I guess. Just recenlty I went through a huge downswing so I know exactly how you're feeling right now, I almost threw up when I realized how many buyins I lost.

Anyway, good plan on taking a break, and congrats on 4 months with the girl.

Thanks a lot. Any advice is always welcomed. Please recommend me. I will state that I'm a senior Psyc. Major so that's a start, right? haha
  54. #954
heh, for sure man. I have never taken any psyc courses at all but I wish I have/did and might actually consider going to do some out of interest in the near future.

The Poker Mindset by Matthew Hilger is definately a must read. It talks alot about tilt, types of tilt, downswings etc, and also goes into goal setting and the +'s/-'s of certain types of goals and what will be most beneficial to your poker game and overall mental state. I won't go too much further than that on it, it's a pretty simple read but it's definately +EV.

Also, I read this article on how to achieve emotional control, not sure how it helped, but I feel it has somehow indirectly. It was posted in iopq's operation awhile back so give him the credit: http://www.buildfreedom.com/tl/tl12.shtml You may or may not have gotten into this stuff with your courses (I'm sure you have in some way but at least this will probably be in a different writing style which is always good for the brain).

Psychology of Poker by Alan Schoonmaker: I haven't read this one yet, I don't even own it yet, but I guess it seems like a decent read. Probably worth it, I find even the worst poker books have at least some value in them so there's definately no harm in getting your hands on more reading material. Dranger7070 read both this and The Poker Mindset and he said it wasn't as good, though still had value.

It's hard to put a specific value on reading stuff like this. I think some people will get more out of it than others, so if you decide to do the readings I hope you get as much as you can out of them.

dont buy that book, waste of time. only psyc bok should be elements of poker

kmind, you need to take a break. I don't think you have a healthy relationship with poker right now.

    And this:

That guy was a huge nit and insta called preflop and on the flop I kind of figured alright he has it. Was hoping somehow he could have QJ/JT ld0. But the thing is he can have AJ as well which equals the 55 combos.

I looked at a post yesterday and something clicked (hopefully) unexpectedly. It basically reintroduced my 2 month ago focus on just exploiting everyone. Shoring up my ranges to play my very best according to their strategy. Today went well despite the last hand. I still finished up (barely) so I'll take it.

I'm going to do the range exercises as well as exploitation thinking constantly. I think connecting the two will help tremendously. Ironically, when just thinking about ranges I changed my play a lot. I really do have to exploit or thinking about ranges is just meh. I think I might post all my shit on here because I have always been secretive in a way when studying. Not really secretive, just private. I leave for awhile with my gf Tuesday and won't have computer access so tomorrow I am going to do some stuff for school, ISF, and then hopefully post some range exercises on here.

I don't minddd flop but leading turn screams Jx and there's no need really on such a dry board.

Might make more sense on a more draw heavy board. But on a more draw heavy board, you should be squeezing flop probably.

So morale of the story.. you'll never end up flatting flop AND leading turn really.

    sick

Anyways, screw the old me I'm better. Not bitter, better.

Up 3 buyins today. About to complete a study task. Then off to bed and won't be playing poker for awhile as I'll be vacationing with the gf to my grandparents mountain house.

School messed up things so only got to hang out with the gf at our houses (...parents' houses ) but really enjoyed the time spent with her and will miss her a lot once school starts as she'll be 3.5hr away. I had a dream I transferred to VA Tech with my best friend and had the time of my life. Oh well, VCU is still better. Not really.

Anyways, poker is going ok. Not really running well. Actually running semi-bad since playing for the first time in like a week the other day. I have been trying to ramp up my aggression for the right reasons. Specifically, I am going to become a great 3bettor. I made a nice 3 barrel bluff shove that worked vs. a reg the other night. I seem to still be making slight mistakes when unsure on if I should bet or check and what not. That's ok. My main focus of exploiting has been working quite well and I am very happy about it.

School starts tomorrow and I could not be more sad/pissed but it SHOULD be my final year finally. I've enjoyed the social college stuff but classes are meh. Especially now since I have to commute to school. I'll be taking more classes than usual and the majority have to be upper level and I cannot fail one. So yeah, a lot of pressure. Sigh. I do have Monday/Wednesday off as well as only one class on Friday which is in the morning. This means longer weekends...yay. My gf and I are trying to see each other every? weekend which I am happy about so we'll get to spend some longer weekends when I visit her as she only has one Monday morning class.

Speaking of my gf, we play card games 24/7 when we are together. I mean our friends are amazed at how often we play. It's usually just us 2 too, meaning our games are somewhat limited. She's become really great at card removal stuff and it also helps me too which I think is great for poker. I was going to submit an article about relating other card games to poker but just didn't have the time. I really wish she'd let me teach her poker but she says she'll just lose all my money. Boo.

I haven't been able to sleep much because of certain things. Poker being the main thing. So I purchased some nice bedding stuff to make it a much more comfortable and enjoyable night for myself. I haven't received my comforter set yet but just the sheets, microfoam mattress topper and microfoam pillow alone have already worked wonders. I'm also thinking about buying some new shoes finally and getting my gf a bunch of random shit for her apartment. I think it's funny how I can be a 50NL reg or whatever and still find a lot of money I can withdrawl while keeping a way overrolled bankroll. That's good and bad in different ways but that's a whole different topic.

I honestly want to be like "oh who cares about running bad let's get it out of my head" but I really don't know how when that's all I get. Maybe it'll just take longer to even things out or something and hopefully I skyrocket at some point up stakes.

Because I'm 10x better than I was 4 months ago when my results were really really good. I was basically flawless at 50NL for months and months and then I get extremely better (ISF coaching as well as other friends) and I just get constantly shat on. I constantly have the top of my range when villain is beating me and they'll fold when I have something. I literally flopped a set of the nuts probably 6 times today and in all 6 they folded on the flop if I bet or turn if the flop went c/c. It's just annoying. I'd much much rather be lucky than good to an extent at poker.

Ok way too addicted to quit but I could go on and on about that which I'd rather not as I could easily see me talking myself into quitting. I'm going to start making a lists of things to do and actually do them. #1: Create an exploitation table thing. I have school for 6 hours tomorrow, figure I have about 6 hours to complete this. I have to know if my theoretical side of the game is in fact correct. Dammit have to get up in 5 hours.

Failed the exploitation thing already. But yay I won something! I won 1st prize of the run bad. Seems like everyone else at FTR is winning this award too. I went down 2 buyins today very quickly and finished up $4. Happy about that. I swear to God though I'm not going to take too much more of this. Insane the way the board ends up. I mean, runner runner shit all the time. I'd be up quite more without that shit. People wonder why I complain? Fuck that, try running bad your whole fucking career. Bbickes said we all wouldn't be playing NLH if we hadn't run good when we started...I admit to not running as badly as could but I definitely ran well below average. The shit hasn't equaled out either.

What I am seeing now at 50NL is people actually going apeshit preflop and these nits who I have 500+ hands have ~0 3bet% yet are now 3bet bluffing the shit out of me. I'm almost convinced they all have it out for me. I just lost in a 4bet pot AQ < K9. I'm telling you, these guys are so shitty but win constantly against me. They do shit that makes no sense and they have no idea what they are doing. That's the shit that hurts the most. I was crushing too when I just clicked buttons. Now that I know what I am doing I'm hitting a huge wall. Fuc.k it I will prevail though, no worries. My graphs are so dumb now. Complete roller coasters. Run average run average run average and watch my winnings skyrocket then run "kmind normal" and blow it all. Repeat. Fuc.k that. You can't even say fuc.k on these boards.

Meh, I've felt the same way lately. Dropped over a 3rd of my roll, came very close to quitting. If it wasnt that I know theres no way I'd ever start again from scratch I probably would have. Havnt played for at least 2 weeks now, and I'm away this weekend. Hopefully if I start playing again in September my head will be a bit better.

Does suck when things just keep not going your way though. Feels like months since someone called me with a 2nd best hand. I dont understand how all my bluffs seem to get called, yet all my value bets get folds (unless they cooler me). Shit like that messes with your head.

Definitely. Yeah, I'll be away all weekend to forget this shit but it is comforting that others feel the same. I wish we just got what we deserved. Glad to see ya back though

Blaah.. if it makes you feel better, I lost 1/4ish of my roll practically last month... it's all part of the grind sadly Varianceee. But things will turn for all of us!
