top pair on low board

As a general rule (and I know there are very few general rules in poker), do you bet top pair on a low board the same way you bet it on a high one? For instance, if you have AK, and the board comes up 2-9-K, a pot-sized bet is standard. Now, say you have 89, and the board comes up 2-5-9. Do you make the same standard bet, knowing that an overcard is likely on the turn or river?

i dont play 89 to hit top pair. HU ill probably put in a bet and see what happens but against a couple of oponents im check folding if there isnt a straight or a flush draw.

I bet it. I'm probably playing a small pot here anyway, so it's not that big of a deal to throw out a pot sized bet here. I'd rather try to take the pot here rather than guess what they have when it checks around and an Ace falls.

In this instance, not only is your top pair weaker, but your kicker is almost worthless. Like so many things in NLHE, it depends. Generally, I'm going to see where I'm at but I'm not going to take it as far as I would AK on a Kxx flop. Even that can get you into a lot of trouble..
