Default What should i have done?

Deep in a MTT about 70 of 700 left (seems like this is where im always getting knocked out)
Folds all around to me , I'm 2 from the button
    My stack is 8,000.
    Hole Cards , Ad 10c
    Blinds are 300-600
    Raise 1500
    Fold
    Fold
SB Calls his stack is 17,000.
    BB folds.
    Flop Ac 9d Jh
    SB checks
    I bet 2200
    He calls.
    Turn Kd

What should i do? Pot is around 8,000 and i have 4,000 left.
Should i check and dump this hand to a bet?
My only bet is really all-in which is only half the pot.

I was just moved to the table so i have no knowledge of these players. This is only the 2nd hand after being moved to this table.

my bad....he's first to act ... he CHECKED to me after the turn. Should i check behind him , or bet i guess is the question.

Fold preflop, AT won't play well against an early position raisor. As played, check behind would be my inclination.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

I presume there were antes too? Your $1500.00 bet is too small. You are really on the edge of push/fold mode. $1500 preflop is giving the blind odds to play almost any twe so shove preflop. The reason you are on the edge is with your T8000 any normal PF raise of 1800-2200 is committing 1/4 of your stack.

When you are on the edge like that you have to add some element of gamble to steal and resteal or otherwise put pressure on your opponents. At 8K your right there because you still have some fold equity against the medium stacks. If you drop much lower you lose that ability.

On the flop either check it down or shove. Tough spot really without a read. I would prefere shove on flop since you built a worthwile pot preflop. If you shove you may get a call from A w/ a worse kicker or someone with a piece and a draw.

I don't really like the idea of pushing preflop with A/T off, I probably dump it preflop with only 13 big blinds unless I've got a good read. This isn't a pot worth fighting over when I've just moved to the table.

Still, if I do decide to play it, I think I push on the flop after SB checks. Its a tough decision at a new table since I don't know if the SB protects his blinds with A/J or A/9 then if he's the kind of player who would trap with 2 pair, but since I've already committed 1/4 of my stack to the hand, I probably push when I hit the flop. If the SB calls and is wrong, you cut his stack in half and that should give him pause.

thanks for the replies. Def should of pushed the flop or even before the flop , S.B. had KJ.... i pushed AI on the turn which was a bad move....he rivered another K and made a full house to knock me out.

If I have the CO and button covered, then I shove PF. If not, then I fold. I like ATo as a steal hand this late.

well i pushed with A-10 suited 6 handed with 12 people left in a 500 plus tourney where i was 3rd shortest stack and busted out. Bad timing.
Almost just dumped it preflop..........wish i would have , only top 10 paid.

stupid stupid stupid...... all that work for nothing , and i shove with A-10...being 6 handed i guess i felt i should get more agressive , but i was 2nd to act so i should of probally just dumped the hand. I definitly had fold equity..... just ran into 10 10 and A-K....
blinds were 8k and my stack was about 25k..........

i stuck my money in with my only outs being 11 flush cards given nobody else folding any clubs and my three miracle cards (a board including A A 10) ...
man was i rooting for the longshot!
