    Default What to do #154645465

The overbet was because I knew I had the best hand and I wanted to make him pay dearly. I hate smooth callers.

But now its river time. My river game sucks almost as bad as my HU.

    Should I have bet again?

    Wastin' away again in margaritaville....
I gotta say you are probably outkicked there.. it sucks to have your hand counterfeited like that but you gotta let that one go unless you think he was on the flush draw and is only betting into your weakness....

Yeah you probably should have bet the river. Atleast if you bet he may fold, but if re-raised, you're pot committed and you have to call anyway. Now you gotta think it over if it's worth 600 to call.

I may fold just because it's early and you'd still have a decent chip stack. Calling may cripple you alot.

Personally I think you got rivered here. He may have Aces and Jacks with a slighty better kicker than you do. Although he could just be playing off your weakness with your check, but its hard to decide w/o reads.

you could bet a small amount on river in the hopes his passiveness would make him not raise. i don't think checking is bad, though. calling really depends on the image of the player.

I just posted this thought in the other thread. When you make your play, think about the future.
When you checked your hand on the river, what were you hoping to accomplish? That you would be able to show down the hand wihtout committing any more chips. Essentially, your mentality at that point was, "a;sldkfja;sldfkja;lskdf the board paired my shit was counterfetied I hope im not beat I wont waste any more chips. FUCK"

BUT! If you decide that your going to showdown the hand, then price it to ur standards. Lets say your willing to show down the hand for at max 200 chips. Why not just bet it instead of hoping that your opponent will play the way wish. This is a case where aggression doesnt MAKE you chips, it SAVES you chips. Lets say you bet 200 and you get reraised to 600. Well you priced what you were willing to play and it didnt work out for you. If you dong want to pay anymore then you fold out. I think that this is much better than checking and hoping that the opponent prices the bet to ur standards.

If the villian has the nuts, hes going to reraise your river bet in the hopes of getting more chips. If the villian has a marginal hand thats slightly better than yours, he might fold out becuase he is afraid of a hand thats better than his non nuts at the same time, he might also call. BUt in either case you priced your show down.

This is the blocking bet at its best.

I had pretty much the same hand the other day, A3 flopped two pair running 8s turn and river, I checked and then crying called, it was a terrible play, I was mad at myself. Looking back I think blocking bet was probably the way to go, if you get re raised you have to think you're out kicked.

Newbie piping in ... in that given situation, I would have raised on the flop, good or bad? Vq brought up the idea of thinking ahead. With the A 5 ... unless another 5 or A fall, that's the best that hand is going to get. If he calls or re-raises my bet, then I'm done - that would be my 'thinking ahead' Does it make sense or am I way off base?

well hobo jaws was first to act on the flop so he just bet out.

correct. Let me ask this differently. In that case, would a raise not be a good play? To try and win the pot there.

If your question is should I bet two pair with a flush and str8 draw out, the answer is yes, god yes. It's a pretty rare spot where slow playing two pair at a full table is a good idea. If you get re raised on a board like that I'd assume draw or TP and move in.

Thanks ... just hoping that I'm not way out in left field.

I think the reason you got in to trouble was betting so much on the turn with the unwillingness to bet the river. You could have bet 200 on the turn and 200 on the river for only 100 more than you bet.
Poker is all about the long long long long long long long term . . .
