    Default Operation - Get Good

Ok, I've kind of wanted to do an operations thread for a while now and decided to do one as I feel it would help me stay focused and reach my current short term goal(s). I think if I have all my posts in one spot and am posting results etc it will keep me on track for getting to where I want to go.

Over the past 4 or 5 SnG's I haven't been playing very well and am making silly mistakes. This comes down to me not stopping and thinking about the hand, where I'm at in the hand, what I hope to achieve with my bets, making silly bets and silly calls when I know I'm more than likely to be behind.

Having this thread running I hope to plug the leaks I have in my current game and hope, at the end of it, I've improved my overall game and improved my push/fold game. I will stop the thread when I feel I have plugged leaks or I hit my target bankroll.

In this thread I will post the following:

    1) Full tourney HH's for review.
    2) Current stats e.g. - games played, ROI%, ITM%, bankroll,
    3) HH's for the bubble part of SnG's.
    4) Heads Up HH's
    5) Various hands e.g. - Hands I think I played bad, hands I think I played good, hands I have trouble with, post flop hands for review and various
    others.

    Goals
    1) Plug leaks - Think about the whole hand. Use the time I'm given to think about my move.
    2) When I bet, think about why I bet and what I'm trying to achieve by betting.
    3) Improve my push/fold game. (This is coming on well using SNGWIZ but will hopefully improve more by posting hands)
    2) bankroll aim - $300

I aim to play around 20-25 $6.50 Turbos per week as I only play 1 table at a time . I will update my results, ITM%, bankroll and ROI% once a week (lets say every Tuesday as I have time in the mornings to do this before work)

Please let this stay in the SNG forums.

Ok to start here is my current stats over my last 103 SnG's:

    Bankroll $118.07
    ROI% 33.1%
    ITM% 44.7%

here is my placings over the 103 games:
    1sts - 21
    2nds - 11
    3rds - 14
    bubbled - 14

I will try to update the thread as often as I can but I don't always have time as I work full time and I play at a high level of Football (soccer) and have to go training twice a week and play games on a Saturday. (Luckily its pre season ATM )

    Wish me luck

This sounds good, I've been thinking about becoming more serious as well, maybe watching you will help me as well.

    Good Luck chief.

Good Luck. Sounds like you're off to a strong start, what was your initial roll? Did you start off playing $6.50's? $118 seems way to low with that kind of success so far so I figure you must have lost a good chunk of change somewhere or cashed out.

I try not to be too serious, because then I just start to feel bad with my lack of progress and inability to play more than 20 SnG's a weeks, but considering we seem to be in a similar spot goal/skill wise I'll try to follow along with you.

Good luck man. You're more than good enough to beat the $6.50s, I'm sure your success will continue.

A question on this, are you setting up in an environment relatively free of distractions? Its often when your mind isnt 100% on your game that you make these mistakes. One thing I've come to realise is that it often only takes one or two little mistakes to cost you an entire tourney. When I review a losing tourney of my own I can often point to one or two hands and say 'thats the one that lost me this game'.

Also I've thought about a thread like this, but I was thinking I'd make notes in a master thread like this, but still post Hands and Tourneys separately, then add a link to them from here. Just a bit less clutter.

GL, from the games you've posted and your sharkscope graph it mainly looks like variance and the occassional mistake that are holding you back. Knuckle down and you've definately got the game to suceed.
Just dipping my toes back in.

I have always played the $6.50's with the occasional $16 (I like a gamble now and again lol). I was staked by a certain FTR regular and started with $60. When the stake finished I gave them their original stake back plus half my winnings, thats why the BR isn't as big as it could have been had I started out myself.

When I play I always turn off the TV, I tend not to play when my GF is in as she watches TV, chats, etc etc and I don't have any music etc on so I'm usually completely free from any distractions. Its just now and again I'll make a terrible play which is usually caused by me acting way to quickly.

Grats on the win Looks good, well played. The only thing that I would say is that I think the blinds are too high to be limping in hand 17, I would either raise or fold, depending on opp.

Hand 21: I don’t like the check-raise with you set here as this board is pretty tame. I think you could have got more out of him on the turn.

Hand 16: Meh, better to have him not play into your AA than cracking you, I’ve seen too many people get clever with AA and get busted.

QTs UTG: Wonder if you can find a push here 5-handed. It’s a bad spot and I always wonder if I’m being too passive folding these low broadway cards in this spot.

A6o UTG: Looks like it was probably 4 handed here. Not sure if A6 is the cut off for not raising in this spot, but I think you have a healthy enough stack to take a stack at a blind steal- but easier said than done.

Hand 12: A8o, is this a risky call with someone pushing a 6BB stack? You made the money so this is probably correct, but would like to see further discussion.

Hand 10: A8s heads up against a raise… I’d consider pushing over him Pre-flop, but this looks good.

Hand 1: I’m a little worried about this push… seems a little strong and you can still afford a standard raise. Glad it worked out.

I think it is fine if opp has been seen pushing in this position before, which it looks like he has. Hero still has a decent stack behind if he loses.

Meh, I suppose your right. I think at the time I was quite happy to take down what was already in the pot but I think I maybe could have got more out of him looking back on it.

Even 4 handed I dont like This hand UTG. its too easily dominated.

As Zee said, Its fine if he's been pushing in this position before. he had been pushing quite a lot and I was happy to take a shot.

    Thanks for the comments

I think instead of me answering all the commented HH's I'll comment on the ones I maybe have questions regarding etc and will take all others on board as it will take me too long to comment on them all, but keep them coming folks

Recent hand, 2nd hand of Turbo. I think I played this ok but just wondering how others may have played it.

Pre flop - getting odds to call the min raise from BB with a potentially good hand.
Flop - should I just check or is the probe bet ok? once both players called I knew I was done with the hand unless a 9 or a heart came on the Turn and even then I may still be done with it.

noted after the hand that Dirttyydugg made a donkish min raise with 10-Jos.

I think calling a minraise with A9s in the BB is OK but on the flop you're looking for 2 pair or better before putting any chips in. I don't hate your flop bet but I would probably just check here.

    Bubble from recent $6.50.

I think I played this well. was pretty solid throughout the bubble. Finished 3rd but thats irrelevant as just posting the bubble period.

    1. stpetefan - was playing tight.
    2. rui1 - was quite tight but not as tight as stpetefan.
    3. GetSmart21 - solid. knew push/fold poker.

Interesting, in my latest tourney I posted I played the bubble with GetSmart21 and had the same read. Solid player who understood positional play quite well.

Hand 1: So tough to extract value here, but I think I put in a small bet on the turn. If he wont call that, he probably wont call a river bet anyway.

Hand 5: Its these kinds of loose calls I'm trying to remove from my game. Min-raise or not, accept that you steal from position so its ok if they do too.

Hand 6: This is -EV even when villians are very tight. Std raise here.

Hand 7: Obviously nothing wrong here, but if he tries to limp very often I'd reraise him with just about anything to say no at some point.
Just dipping my toes back in.

Yeah I didn't really pick this up until 5 handed when he became more aggressive.

Yeah I usually bet as I'm always scared of giving flush draws free cards but the chances he has a FD are very slim.

Yeah, I think I need to remove these from my game also, especially this late in the game. I often feel compelled to call min raises from the BB. Something that needs to be addressed.

Yeah looked at this in SNGWIZ and it becomes a fold when stpetefan calls with 66+, AJ+, ATs+ and rui1 calls with 44+, A9+, A7s+, KQs. Any tighter and it's a push. I think they are calling a lot wider here so this should have been a fold.

Just 2 tabled for the 2nd time in my life!!

was pretty good. finished 1st and 3rd. I started the games 2 levels apart so by the time it got down to the Bubble the games were at the same stage.

The next time I do this I'll start one game then not start the next game until when the 1st game is at around 50/100 or 75/150 so that if I'm on the bubble in one game I'm pretty much in fold mode on the 1st game.

didn't really like it when I saw a flop at the same time on both tables as I felt rushed into making decisions and at one point I missed that I had a straight luckily villain checked down!! lol.

Heh, I'd wait for 20x to start having shots. Losing one $16 is almost as bad as losing 3 6.5s. Losing two is the equivalent of a 6 game losing streak.

It isn't about trying to take away flush odds here, since you have a boat. You should have bet the turn because if he has the 9 you are just building the pot to get it all in on the river, if he doesnt have the 9 you aren't going to get any money out of it anymore.

I meant a bet on the flop before I hit the boat sorry. but your right I should have bet the turn

Lately at these low stakes I continualy see people betting weakly on the flop. I am trying to pick spots and steal these weak bets when I think that they wont call a reraise.

Heres 2 hands where I done this. I sit worth a steal if I have a read or if I think the weak bet is just a bad attempt at stealing the pot? or should I just forget about these at these stakes?

I've also noticed these bets are usually the size of the BB.

Those are two really good boards to do it on b/c there really aren't any draws he will call you down with and you make him show up with a hand to beat you.

gl man, you could easily play $16 turbos if you had the roll.
Jman: every time the action is to you, it's an opportunity for you to make the perfect play.

    Thanks man.

Hit a bit variance and have finished OOTM the last 6 games. (2 $16's included in that ).

A-K got beat from K-Qs, villain hit runner runner flush.
    A-A got cracked by 10's.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pretty poor week, down around $5 . However I was up to $171.00 at one point and stupidly played the 2 $16 turbos and then lost every game after that!!

    This weeks resluts:
    SnG's played - 20 (2x $16's)
    1sts - 4
    2nd - 0
    3rd - 2
    the rest - OOTM

BR at start of 1st week - $118.07
BR at end of 1st week - $113.67

    OVERALL
    SNG's played - 123
    ITM% - 42.3
    ROI% - 27.5

First time in a while I've been down in a week. Hopefully I'll do better this coming week. playing (and losing) they 2 $16's was pretty dumb.

Hand 1: JJ – Yep, with a limper and a raiser behind I like this push.

Hand 2(31): I like the raise here, probably make it about 700 and see what he does- I think you could push him off a weak ace and certainly a middle pair or a flush draw. If he calls and leads the turn I’d fold. If he calls and checks the turn I wouldn’t fire another barrel. C/F river.

Hand 3: Bad beat. I’m kind of in a karma spiral on these myself. I’ve had my share of my low PP’s suck-out-set over premium PP as well as been sucked out by crap pair calling my overpair push and them spiking trips. It all happens and you just gotta be happy you made the better play. It’s frustrating but I feel worse about sucking out when I made a dumb move than losing when I’m way ahead and some donk makes a bad call.

Hand 4: Man, I’m with you. I’m always lost with how to play these strong broadway cards (AQ especially, but I always get antsy with AJ and KQ aswell) against a raise with semi-healthy stacks. Calling and playing position is probably better, but you always think he could have something you easily dominate. I’d say keep this hand in a word doc and collect similar situations where you face tough decisions with these kind of cards and summit a collection of them for review.

    Thanks for the comments.

Hand 4 - (The AQ hand). This should actually be an easy fold to a raise on the bubble. It only becomes a push if he only calls with AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK, AKs. Add AQs to his calling range and its a fold!!

At least now I have learned from it and will know what do do next time.

    Quick update.

Have only managed 3 games this week (1st and 2 4th's ) as I have been doing loads of overtime in work and my football pre season training started so i've been working and running and running and running lol. Will hopefully get a few games in at some point.

After reading through most of this it seems like you're making good plays to be crushing these limits, but just on a cooler.

Obviously this is unfortunate but you have your head straight so you'll be fine.

Guess I just wanted to post to give some praise for the play.
Probably be seeing you at the $16's very soon.

    Hey, thanks man.

I hope your right. and I am just on a bit of a cooler. Still need to tweak a few things before I think I'm ready to move up. Theres plenty poker to be played before I do move up so hopefully I'll be ready by then.

Thanks again. It's nice to get a bit of praise. Very much appreciated

    Played perfectly imo, nh.

Variance is a bitch, i agree. Playing $16s wont help though as you can't let your bankroll drop much more without going to 3.40s GL, I'm sure you'll get through.

Dont do this. Simply cut $16s out of your thinking until you get a $450 BR. If you feel yourself tilting, less games is better than more. Play under optimal conditions. Dont play tired, dont play when drinking, dont play when tilting. Sit down at every single game determined to play your A game, and really try to hang onto this mindset while playing.
Just dipping my toes back in.

    Thanks guys.

I'm on a really bad run just now. I only played 1 $16 and it was definately frustration and chasing my losses.

I went against all that I know I shouldn't do. I've got it out my system now.

I've been checking my HH's and I haven't been doing much wrong. Keep telling myself that in the long run the plays I've been making will win me money.

If my push/folds are correct then I can't argue really.

    chin up, move on.

    If you tilt easily:

The moment you lose 3 in a row, on any given buyin, drop.
Once you win a dropped one, then move back up.
Of course, this applies specially to $5~$20 players. $30+ its different.

This way, you will avoid giving away your BR to other player's charities.

I been there, m8. Hang tough.

I think this is way too nitty. Provided that you don't move up () to try to chase your losses and you still have the BR to play the level you're at, I don't see a reason to move down just because you've finished 3 OOTM. If you're playing well then this is dudding yourself of a lot of potential winnings.

If you really are on tilt then the only real answer is to stop playing.
  45. #45
I wouldn't say I'm on tilt. I posted the rant thread just after playing a game in which I ran into aces when I shoved on the button with J-Qs when low on chips.

I rarely go on TILT (I guess firing up a $16 is TILT however), and bad beats etc don't bother me in the slightest it's just that this is the worst run I've been on and I f*cking hate it lol

Just need to keep telling myself that if its just variance and I'm playing well then it'll eventually come good.

Typical that I go on a sh*t run when I start up an operations thread lol.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure i'll come good eventually.

Played 3 SnG's so far today. finished 2nd, 5th and 2nd. Out of the rut I found myself in. Have been hitting flops, cards have been holding out against flush draws etc etc.

Here a full tourney I just played. I think overall its ok. comments?

History is backwards, hands count down

Hand 19: (A6s) I don't like this call, even if you are in the BB facing a min-raise with the SB completing. You hit your ace but you really can't feel comfortable with it.

Hand 18: (AJo) Bit of an overbet hitting that flop

Hand 14: Tough Spot.. I think I'd let him have this PF as you really can't feel that comfortable with just about any flop. Reraise seems a little low. If you're playing blind defense isn't better to shove? (although last time I defended my blinds with 66 it didn't turn out so well).

    Hand 9: Nice

    Overall Solid. Nice work.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah hand 19 I think I prob should have folded. It's a habit I need to break as I could have been easily dominated there.

Hand 18. I should have just made a standard bet here your right. This was me making a decision too quickly (probably my worst leak )

Hand 14 - I expected him to fold based on him doing this before and also from stealing from the BTN a few times.

but I think you priced him in raising only 1.75(ish?). Around 3x his raise is usually stand for a reraise, no? (unless you want him to call and then you bait with a lower bet). Perhaps all the more reason to push given he's a repeat offender.

Yeah I suppose it was either a shove or a fold. Again this is me not thinking about the whole hand. i.e. if he calls my raise then what do I do on the flop etc.

I guess as I have a big stack then I prob should have just let it go PF.

I'll be blunt for a second here.

You've identified 3 obvious leaks so far:

1 - Not thinking before making actions.
2 - Playing out of your BR
3 - Calling raises with crap hands from the BB.

What we havnt seen a lot of is you taking much action to plug those leaks. You're not going to improve just acknowledging them, you have to come up with ways to address them. If just wanting to isnt enough, then try to come up with some kind of system. Maybe you always take 2 or 3 deep breaths before pressing any button after making a decision. Maybe you write down exactly what hands you will call a raise with from the BB and keep it next to your computer. You've got to do something about them though.

I have been taking action against plugging these leaks. I play around 20 games a week and I'll post maybe 2 or 3 of those games on this thread.

I've not 100% fixed these leaks yet. especially 1 and 3 but with regards to me stopping and thinking before making a move, this is definately being addressed but every now and again i'll act to quickly.

    2. playing out of my bankroll - I have 100% fixed this leak as of the last time I fired up a $16.

    3. - Calling raises with crap hands from the BB - this can be changed to "calling min raises from BB with marginal hands."

thanks for the comments though. I see where your coming from.

Alright ill give ur last HH a shot. I grind the 10$ sngs, but i used to do the 6$ turbos and beat it, so hopefully i can help.
    Here goes:
    #24-19=Good, well played.
#18=You have an excellent hand, make a standard raise or even a weak lead to try to get him to push. VERY BAD push.
    #17-15=Good, well played.
#14=I do not like the reraise, its too weak. Either call, reraise to 1350 or go all in.
    #13-7=Good, well played.
#6=I dont hate it, but i think push/fold would be better, since that raise is getting u pot commited anyways.
    #5-1=Fine

You played well. Your play is extremely elevated for the stakes that you are playing. You should be absolutely killing the 6$ sngs with ease. This sng looked like a turbo to me (im not sure, i dont play on Pokerstars), and i really think that you should stop playing turbos, and start playing normal sngs. Luck has a smaller effect in the, and u will make a lot more $, im almost sure of it.
Also, i think hand 19 where u called a min raise with A6suited was a fine call. Just proceed cautiously when an A hits, just like u did. You played that hand perfectly.
Really, the only leak that i can find is that you get very impatient when u flop a big hand (like AJ in that SNG i just reviewed and when u flopped trip 8s in ur other sng). When you flop a big hand, just take your time and think about how you can extract the most possible.
    Thats just what i think.

    Thanks!!

I think you may be right on the last part. when I make a big hand I sometimes don't play it well enough with regards to extracting more chips.

I really enjoy Turbo's more as they get to the push/fold part of the game quicker and I feel tat this part of my game is one of my better areas although I am still very much learning about when to push and when to fold.

You should embrace donks. Stack 'em every time you get.
If every player at a table was just as good, then only cards would speak. Poker would actually become a game where your cards *do* matter more than the other stuff.

Better week than last week I suppose. I'm out of the rut I found myself in last week which is noice. I'm thinking before acting a lot more now which is good. I have sworn not to play another $16 until i'm rolled for them.

Going on a 2 week holiday to Turkey next week so won't be able to play any games for 2 weeks but will continue the operation as soon as I return. I leave on 16th July. Will post results for this coming week on Saturday or Sunday.

    Thanks for all the support.

whats your move here? big stack can call a wide range so if I shove I dont have much FE really.

raise to take the blinds here or just shove? villain has been loose but not too loose. called a lot PF in the early stages but folded to raises. If we put him on 15% of hands here a shove is wrong. can we put him on tighter than that?

    Random,
1st hand (Td 8d): I'd go ahead and shove here. In your situation, I'm willing to take a 40/60 to try and double up. Y0u're all in next hand anyway, and you can't bank on getting a much better hand. I'd shove it with no regrets.

2nd hand (Tc 5h): If he calls and loses, he's the new short stack by a lot, so I think his range could easily be tighter than 15%. I still might let him walk here though to show I'm not pushing ATC. You're short, but not on death row.
    Chase
  65. #65
I agree with Chase for hand 1, but I disagree with hand 2.

15% is 77+, A7s+, ATo+, K9s+, KTo+, QTs+, QJo, JTs. Since you said he is pretty loose, but not with raises I could see him calling with this range. If he is a thinking player and decent at all he knows you need to push wide here and call wider than that, maybe with 66+, A2s+, A7o+, K9s, K9o, Q9s, QTo, JTs, and JTo. With this range you need to fold.

Hand 2 you can afford to std raise and still have 10BB behind if he shoves over. A c-bet would hurt but not kill you if it doesnt work.

    ZeeDee:
Whoops, looked at the wrong hand range for 15%. I was thinking it was much wider. My bad.
BsJaust: Do we really want to try to steal here with T5? If big stack is a thinking player, he could shove over with a huge range and force us to fold, as it's the bubble. I probably let him walk here.

Given that both we and BB have greater than 10 BB, we can bet 500 and not look too weak. BB is bigstack and has us covered, but he's really only marginally bigger than the rest, if we have a real hand we can make him easily the shortstack.

It would depend on reads somewhat, but I'm ok with putting some pressure on during the bubble. He doesnt want to take risks anymore than anyone else.

This is where WIZ, SNGPT and pokerstove differ. 15% of hands on WIZ is - 33+, A7+, A4s+, KTs+.

Hand 2 I just made a standard raise and he folded but then I questioned whether that was correct. If we get shoved over then we can afford to fold this and not be to desperate BUT it is the bubble and do we want to risk losing the chips we raise if we get shoved over?

Villain wasn't a thinking player thats for sure, he continually limped from EP early in the game and then folded a raise, needlessly throwing chips away.
