Can't think of any specific articles right now. Observation as to what hands they show down and how they bet them is really important, as are general reads (calling station, solid winning regular, etc.)

Post hand(s) as an example and I'll try to help you out.

+1 what tai wrote. You get it by experience.

There also is another, more or less "accurate" method. If you do have PokerTracker and it's HUD you can use his stats to make an educated guess (sound familiar? ) about his hand range, since it's all there.

    An example:
If you take a look at his pre flop raise percentage and you have a good number of hands (say 100+, even though this still isn't much) you can get an idea by looking up the top x% hands (x being his pre flop raising percentage of course) to get his raising range. Same for other things like pushing range, calling range PF, etc ... you name it.
Unfortunately I haven't found a table on the net for that, I thought there ought one, but haven't found it again. But you can always use PokerStove, I think it can do that.

Going about it this way has some major drawbacks however:
    a) You do know hone your instincts
    b) This mostly applys for cash game, in tournaments the blinds increase rapidly forcing every player to make adjustments to his ranges as the tournament progresses, so if you have like 10000 hands over hundrets of tourneys on a player you'll get the wrong idea about his ranges, as you only have the average value! If he's a decent player he will raise less than what you have on stats in the beginning and more than on stats in the end.
    c) Did I mention you do not hone your instincts?

One article I really liked about the topic is from Daniel Skolovy:

I know, I know, you're all going to tar and feather me, because I posted a link to another site, but hell, what can I say, article is still good
