How Valuable are the Comments in the Chat Box?

Default How Valuable are the Comments in the Chat Box?

I bring up this hand because the villain comment in the chat box (which, conveniently, is in the hand history for me) influenced my decision to call the all-in. It wasn't the only factor, but it did tip the scales away from the fold.

I should mention that in the previous hand, I raised 3x in the SB against the villain with rags. Villain folded. I did that because he hadn't been defending his blinds when I raised in BTN or SB. Since villain didn't call, he couldn't see that I had rags. However, I interpreted his comment as complete tilt. Although the hand history doesn't quite show it, I only noticed the comment after I made my initial button raise (it didn't impact my decision to raise the BTN there).

Just wondering how seriously I should take comments in the comment box, if I should pay any attention to it at all.

    $4 NL Hold'em Turbo - $4.6 + $0.4 -- 30/150/300 blinds -- 4 Players

    BB - 3,823
    UTG/CO - 5,261
    BTN (Hero) - 3,914
    SB - 2,002

    Pot is 570

    Dealt to agnesamurphy J, T

one fold, SB chats: dude fck you, Hero raises to 600, SB is all in 1,822, Hero calls 1,372

    Hero shows J, T
    SB shows A, K

Yes you have to look at the chat, but this interpretation is way out there. "He appears to be annoyed" would be more accurate and it actually makes it more likely he has a hand because otherwise he wouldn't challenge you.

If he shoves 50% of his hands, JTs is a losing call.

If he shoves 60% of his hands, it's a very small winner (50.3% v 49.7%)

JTs is not a good hand to call here as even if he's tilt shoving your equity is poor

Protip: if they say 'sorry' in the chat box, they're prolly not sorry at all
Congratulations, you've won your dick's weight in sweets! Decode the message in the above post to find out how to claim your tic-tac

Protip No.2: If they say "(B)" they're implying that your drunk.

I think your interpretation would be more apt if the post showed up in the chat before Villain saw his cards.

Since he saw his cards, then posted the taunt, it more likely means he has a hand he's willing to go with.

You shouldn't have posted Villain's hand, 'cause it's too easy to be results oriented in the analysis.

But once we make our first raise, we're now calling 1,372 to win 2,542. 1.85:1 so we need to be 35% to win against his shoving range. JTs is 35.6% to win against a range as tight as 12.4% (ATo+, KJo+, JTs+ A9s+, 77+).
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

It was always going to happen that way.
Dude was annoyed at previous hand.
You always raise this blind anyway because they don't defend and J10 suited is enough to do that.
When they shove although you are probably behind but at roughly 2:1 probably calling, just unlucky they have the suit covered.

Dude wasn't annoyed from the prvious hand, he's pretending to be on tilt to get a call.

Can't see I'm folding JTs here after opening, regardless of what he posts in the chat.

I just shove pre if you're wondering and don't pay much attention to chat.

think you can glean a lot from the chat

chat can let you know the villians emotional state, and if they claim that your play was horrible- they may even give u rationale - which can give u insite into their playing style

ie if they say you icm perfect shove of 44 was horrible, you prob know that they are not a icm follower

Don't overestimate chat, for example a have a script, when I click f1 it types in chatbox jajaja, f2 means: but how much did you lose?, I can enter that way 12 different messages. It means nothing.
If things were to magically revert to January 1st, 2003, only I could take everything I know now in terms of poker ability/knowledge, bonus clearing, etc., I think it's safe to say that it would be trivially easy to make over a million dollars.

And what would have been the optimal play preflop? Shoving or minraise/calling and maybe vs very tight players minraise folding?

    Are you asking me?

Chat turned off could be a solution if you feel it affects your play. Looking at the chat is about as useful as showing your cards.
It takes 2 years to learn to talk, but a lifetime to learn when to shut up.

The chatbox seems (from my experience) to be reserved mostly for cursing someone out after they get sucked out on and proceeding to call them a donk and comment how bad they are.

depends how you rate them as a player - if they are obviously a fish - lots of chat - clearly 1 tabling etc then in my experience what they write in chat is opening a door to their state of mind and gives you an edge.
Good players hardly ever chat & I'm always wary when they do

When you see stuff like this youve got to take into consideration the reverse psycholgy part of it, so you best off ignoring him and concentrating on your holdings.
Another slightly different example is when someone who just lost a big pot to a bad beat wakes up with a monster the very next hand, and shoves for 50bb, that could persuade you to call him off light thinking he's on tilt thats happened to me loads, big mistake.

Because I know that I am not able yet to understand what mood they try to show me, or even if he's faking or he's realy tilted I prefer to don't watch at the chat... Even more I keep playing my hand and never risk to pay he's all in if it means more than 25-30% of my stack.
