This is the third post in a series that shows you the skills needed to do any type of poker EV calculation using just addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

This week, we’re going to look at some more complicated scenarios and show you how to expand your current knowledge of EV calculations so that you can calculate the EV of just about anything as long as you know enough information.

Outcome 1: Villain folds we win (0.38)(5.20) = $1.976

Outcome 2: Villain calls we win (0.2542)(12.7) = $3.22834

Outcome 3: Villain calls we lose (0.3658)(-7.5) = -$2.7435

Total EV of flop shove: $1.976 + $3.22834 + -$2.7435 = $2.46084

0.38 + 0.2542 + 0.3658 = 1

EV villain folds = 0.38 * 5.20 = $1.98
EV villain calls and we win = 0.62 * 0.41 * $12.70 = $3.23
EV villain calls and we lose = 0.62 * 0.59 * $7.50 = -$2.74

Total EV = +$2.47

Exactly what I just came up with.

Can I just say this has been a great read for me. I have read about EV before but these articles really made it clear for me.

What about when villains shove on us? Do we do like reverse ev with what equity we estimate vilaain has and how often we fold?

The EV of folding is 0. You would find the EV of calling to see if it's profitable or not. You start by finding the list of possible outcomes (you win or you lose). Find the chances of each and the profitability of each and work it out from there.

Quick example since I have a few minutes to spare:

The pot is $15 on the flop with $12 behind and we're facing a single opponent who open shoves. We suspect that we have about 40 percent equity when we call.

The outcomes after we call:

1. We win (happens 40% of the time, we profit $27).
2. We lose (happens 60% of the time, we profit -$12).

EV of calling = (0.40)(27) + (0.60)(-12)
EV of calling = $10.80 - $7.20
EV of calling = $3.60

Ok yeah. So were basically taking the fold factor out of our equation s. And going with equity x bet. Rigjt?

Start from the beginning of the series. If you want to know the EV of something, the first thing you do is list out the possible outcomes after taking that action. If you're calling, there are only two possible outcomes: you win or you lose. Go from there.
