I don't *always* check when I hit, but it seems most of the hands I post start w/ a flop check 
Anyway, my read was correct: he never bets when he doesn't hit. So if I bet the flop, as I've been doing for the past x hands (when heads-up started, villain had me 7:3 in chips), he'd fold and I wouldn't get paid.
