Annoying Button Spots

Action is folded to you -- you hold a hand like AJ or AQo. You raise 3-4x BB and BB or SB thinks you are on a steal and re-raises you 3x. You call. The flop blanks out for you, something like K 3 8 rainbow.

Opponent bets half pot, you ?
Opponent checks, you?

I float some when he bets half pot some of the time, fold a lot, raise sometimes.

If he checks i give up because he hit the flop 90% of the time

i usually dont call preflop and when i do its with the intention of floating a fair amount

You wouldn't call the SB with AQ?

You're OOP, it's often better to 4 bet or fold.

We're on the button in this situation though

AJ is an easy fold for me. AQ depends!! Are we assuming he is 3 betitng light or playing back, have we seen anything go to showdown vs us. Calling with AQ on an ASSUMPTION does suck esp if he has only 3 bet us once or twice.

i dump AJ almost always and AQ depends on history/table dynamics.

The AQ situation came up 2 nights ago. Probly 200 hands w/ villain 2 to my left, and i had been running fairly loose for me, like 24/18. We had both been 3-betting a fair amount, and he had 3 bet my button raise from the BB atleast 3 times.

$50nl w/ 100bb eff. stacks.
I raise $2 on the button w/ AQs, villain 3-bets to $7 from the BB. I 4-bet to $25, villain tanks then shoves w/ 88. Obv. i call getting 3:1.

Should i be 4-betting here against an aggro villain like this, or is a smooth call still good? Ive been opening up my 3-betting alot recently (mostly due to sauce's post) and im starting to feel much more comfortable in 3-bet pots because of villains calling/folding way too much.

This happened to me a lot last night and it got me thinking. I was actually thinking about making a post about it. Probably half the time it was folded to me, and i made raise from the button with a marginal or decent hand, i got 3bet by the sb or bb who i guess were assuming i was just positionally raising. I'm pretty confident they don't have much of a hand, but i just fold most of the time. Is this standard? How do you guys combat this? just smoothcall? 4bet a wider range? I folded most of the time and i think i 4bet 99 and villain folded, is this standard?

i think this is pretty standard. It takes villain playing back at me quite a bit before i start 4-betting too light.

If you're going to call with a marginal hand its way better to call with something like a low pp or sc *(the asterisk because if our opponent notices obviously we change it) maybe even Axs (AJ is essentially no different) because its solid against KK-88. The reason low pp and sc's are good is NOT because we're playing to hit a set or in sc's case the nuts, if an opp is threebetting light it's because we plan on floating a good amount, the set and nuts just make up for the times we dont want to float.
