I would have laid down this river bet, but I wouldn't have checked the turn like you did.

If you take on the roll of the aggressor on the flop, carry it through to the turn. You checking on the turn looks like you were scared of his flop re-raise call. Make it look like you want to continue to build the pot, even with an ace on the board. Are you scared of the ace? If so, bet at it. If you aren't, bet at it.

If he has you beat, I'd put him on an over 88 pair or set. Usually you are winning on this flop though, so continue betting at the pot.
