Checking out of position on the flop is a good play if the turn is meaningless. The assumption is that better hands will bet and a check through is the green light to throw some bets out there.
The turn was meaningless and he turned on the aggression. I think the river is where he went a bit overboard. Not many beaten hands are calling a the pot on the river, some better hands are folding though.
