I think the pre-flop call in hand 2 is marginally bad, but not as terrible as people think. There is a lot of dead money in the pot and you have position, although your hand is pretty terrible heads-up. A big part of this is knowing what range he'll do that with and how to play him post-flop. With good reads I can see you making up ground against the otherwise 40:1 implied odds needed for the call.
