Having the login basically just streamlines the process for new forum users when they create an account.

It also allows Facebook to harvest data of all your users who may not want to share that data with Facebook.

What data are you referring to? With the connect with facebook, ftr gets permission to extract data from facebook, following the permission and privacy settings of the user. You get the option to share things on facebook like you do any other site then, but it shouldn't automatically share things.
