My explanation for this is bad casting. Maybe the kid is supposed to be like 5 years old, but they wanted to cast someone older for whatever normal and stupid reasons Hollywood does that

IIRC earlier in the episode aren't they talking about how he thinks he has a memory of something from the old life, but it turns out he was too young to remember but was trying to remember etc. If so, that lends it's hand to my interpretation of the story they're trying to tell

Frankly, if that's the direction they're going in, it's not bad. They'd have to tread real lightly on the deer scene, but it's still possible to do something somewhat similar. What we saw could have been a huge bastardization of the story they're trying being told smoothly

If I'm right, they can very much salvage the show by abandoning all preconceived ideas, and just go straight conventional zombies plus straight conventional storytelling. It still would be lacking a lot, but would be possible to do within the context of dreadful behind the scenes stuff, but it would no longer be insultingly bad
