I was at their cd presentation at a music store in 97 with about 30 other people where I stole the record. That they have 80k youtube hits blows my mind.

I had this song on one of a couple of 150min. tapes I took to england sometime in the 90's. I was walking aimlessly around a small fisher town near Dover, listening to my walkman, thinking about a girl back home and this song cut in just when I walked past a sidestreet that gave way of the sun setting over the ocean. The BBC Sessions version "Haunted by a Freak" is one of my favorite live performances. I mean, it's not particularly different from the Happy Songs version and it's not any sort of particularly elaborate composition, but I don't know, I just can't get enough of it.

You should listen to Agalloch if you haven't already. I'd suggest "The Mantle", from what I've heard though they're all meant to be pretty good but I haven't listened to them.
