Even without a weapon, a few serious smacks to the head, hands to the throat, or any other kind of physical assault and promise of future assault/death will have 99% of people submit/comply. We're not super heroes. Fear, panic, and shock set in and all a person wants is to get away alive. It's like when they tell women that if an assailant isn't holding a gun to your head they should run because aiming a pistol is hard and you'll probably get hit somewhere non lethal. Are you serious? That makes sense in an abstract statistical setting but who is going to be thinking that when you see someone pull a gun.
