Dilemma: When you order a burrito at Chipotle with double meat, you rarely, if ever, actually get double meat. It's more like the person making the burrito compensates and gives you perhaps 1.5x as much. Or they give you too much when you don't specifically order double meat. Whatever.

Solution: Order a normal burrito, meat of your choice, and when they are done scooping said meat and laying it on your rice, you "spontaneously" ask for double.

I'm going to try it out sometime this week for sure, trip report likely to follow.

Hypothesis: The Chipotle worker will try to keep the second scoop consistent with their first scoop due to a psychology principle that I understand yet don't know the name of.

Going to get re-certified as a personal trainer, and the exam is the end of November. I am still 35 lbs or so higher than I want to be so it's hammer time. I just won't have the time or energy to get into the kind of shape I need to be in. I know from experience that there will be a ton of opportunities for me before the New Year, if I am in shape and looking the part. If I take the exam and float through the new year trying to get in shape I will miss out.

What is the evolutionary reasoning or explanation behind homosexuality? It seems like it would be an extraordinary evolutionary disadvantage to be gay, for example MUCH worse than incest (speaking ONLY in biological evolutionary terms).

Yet I've read figures that something like 10% of people are gay (correct me if I'm wrong). What gives? Even if human sexuality can be measured by a scale as opposed to a black and white sort of thing, it really doesn't make any sense, at least within the context of my limited understanding of evolution.

A couple points that he misses, however:

1. Not all genetic traits are selected for by nature; many are 'just along for the ride'. This is because genes are complex, and one mutation could cause several changes in traits, yet if just one of those trait changes increases fitness, the others will be passed on even though they individually have no fitness benefits. This is one of several ways in which we can see traits that don't seem to increase fitness.

2. Leading current research is showing that the genes responsible for homosexuality are also responsible for increased fertility in women. This alone could explain why homosexuality is so proliferate throughout many species. Basically, this kind of gene that increases fertility could make 10% of babies homosexual, but if it increases total reproduction or the fitness of current reproduction by enough, it would increase total fitness and thus be passed on to later generations

Look at it this way: let's say we live under a hypothetical paradigm where the bigger the number, the greater the fitness (i.e. 100 is more fit than 90). Now, let's say that we have ten different genes, each gene is a value of 10 for a total value of 100, but let's say that another member of our species has a mutation that changes his genetic make up to where he no longer has ten genes of 10, but one gene of 4 and nine genes of 11 for a total value of 103. So we have a collective fitness of 100, while this new mutation gives another member of our species a collective fitness of 103. This other member then is more fit than we are, and is more likely to pass on his genes.

But what about that one gene of 4? That gene is ridiculously unfit, right? Yes, but because it is accompanied by the other nine genes of 11, it has 'tagged along for the ride' of a collective genetic makeup of increased fitness. The gene of 4 is essentially homosexuality. Viewed in isolation, homosexuals have very low reproductive fitness, but since the genes that cause homosexuality raise fitness enough in other areas to make the total higher than competition, it gets passed on

3. Another aspect can be that some genes don't express themselves until post-reproduction, and this means that they're never actually selected for. The entire human race could turn homosexual once they hit 60 years old, and it would have little effect on natural selection since all the breeding and passing on of traits happened before the gayness expressed itself.

Here's a disease that illustrates this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_familial_insomnia It doesn't show up until later in life, and thus has not been selected out of the gene pool. If it showed up in children it wouldn't have even survived one generation.

Another aspect of this point can be found in society. A lot of gay people have still had children because they have to hide their gayness.

Everytime I see somebody do something overly stupid on the road, they are always using their cell phones and most often female.

Somewhat related point: what the hell goes through people's minds when they ride their bike (i.e. bicycle) on busy roads? I don't care if it's legal, it's fucking stupid. If you've ever seen the mangled aftermath of a car on bicycle collision you know what I mean. All it takes is for one drunk or texting idiot to not pay attention for 1 second.

This is even worse. I'm leaving the gym the other day (rah rah rah) and going around a fairly sharp curve to get out of the parking lot, and there's this buffoon of a father with one of those things attached to his bike, pulling his 2 infant kids around. So to get this straight, he's riding his bike on the road, around the corner, his kids are being pulled around in a little mesh compartment with no helmet or protection whatsoever. If a car hits them, they are dead, period.

How is that even fair to me or other drivers on the road? Granted, I pay attention when I drive and drive well. But it's a stupid, unnecessary risk and if I wasn't paying attention for 2 seconds, I'd be looking at very real criminal (2xManslaughter) and civil penalties (all my money).

I agree with this. Everytime I'm driving and some asshole does something stupid like jaywalk on a busy road, I think about how my life would be ruined if I accidentally hit him.
