Looks like it's all about supply and lack of efficiency of current plants.

It's a testament to the fallacy of clean coal. It's indeed possible to make clean coal, but we don't have the engineering capacity or the economic scale to do so yet. I like how there wasn't a bunch of crap about UK companies saying 'oh hai guise we can haz just do clean coal lol'

And a striking comment was about 'nuclear being too slow'. Yeah, shoulda started those a decade or so ago huh?

I'm pretty unaware of the UK situation, though, but it sounds pretty bad. Not only that, but word around town is that they're being overrun (hyperbole) by Sharia law, and have a higher per capita debt than US

i feel like i'm coming down with something. last night i felt a little lump in the back of my throat while swallowing, so i immediately took some glutamine and vitamin C. this morning i have a lot of phlegm i'm hawking up and just generally feel like my body is on the brink of either winning or losing this (i.e. becoming actually ill).

not gonna lift today even though i really really want to. anybody have any other suggestions? wuf?

Yeah, you don't wanna lift because that can exacerbate sickness. I've even gotten sick many times just from training too hard.

First off, the science is really sketchy on this, but even if you went to br.com and asked Lyle (who doesn't believe anything that science doesn't back up) he would say there's something about anecdotal accounts and colds with things like taking a bunch of vitamin c.

Lots and lots of vitamin c (maybe ester-c is best, I'm unsure). I don't know what kind of dosage, just take a few pills several times a day, and take less if you start getting diarrhea or cramping.

Load up on oil of oregano. You can find that at most health food stores. I also can't tell you dosages, but I just take a bunch several times a day. The normal sized bottles last like two days if I'm trying to kill a cold.

Maybe add echinacea to that. I've personally gotten nowhere with it, but some people say they do. Maybe do chicken soup and some 7up. These are pretty much all old wives tales types of things, but for some reason, it looks like combating the common cold at first stages is something that science isn't able to test well.

Anyways, I just do a bunch of vitamin c and oil of oregano, starting as quickly as possible, and this noticeably cuts down on my sickness depth and length. I find that each of my common cold stages isn't awful and only lasts about a day

Also, just as a footnote, you got this from somebody else. We tend to like to think that the common cold is something that we get because we're not healthy enough, but the evidence shows that people who are not around other people don't get the cold. It's a simple virus transmission thing. And for future notice, even at the slightest indication of getting a cold, you should attack it with what works ASAP.

It's possible these remedies won't work for you though. I really dont know because the science just doesn't say anything believable about it.

Good luck, being sick sucks, but I haven't been too sick for a long time since I started massing vit c and oregano.

For past 6mo-year I have had a lot of trouble with colds. I havent been getting them all that frequently but when I do it always seems to slip down into my lungs and I am coughing up disgusting greyish phlegm that has a very strange texture and it sticks with me for a matter of weeks. I cant remember it ever turning into a fever, and generally I just feel shitty in the morning and randomly cough up this horribly grey stuff. Do I have the aids?

I'm going on one of Lyle's recommendations in a short, old post that says something like mega-dosing vitamin C and glutamine as soon as you come down with symptoms (or something to that effect). I think I'm on about 3000g vitaminC and maybe 15-20g glutamine today, split up into about 3 different doses. Not sure what constitutes mega-dosing, I'm guessing I'm on the low side of that but I don't know.

I feel fine right now though, still a lingering effect (or maybe it's imaginary at this point), plan later is to go to the bar and drink lots of beer, hopefully feel fine tomorrow and do my workout that I was going to do today. If the bar and/or lots of booze is a seriously lolbad idea right now, I could probably skip that...

pure speculation:

I don't think those first two things are mutually exclusive. Obviously you get it from somebody (something) else, but I tend to think those with strong immune systems (based on many factors) are significantly less likely to come down with a cold in the same situation as someone with a weaker immune system.

i blame lyle's generic bulking routine, the leg workouts can be pretty nasty especially. not sure how familiar you are with it, but even week 2 of the deload/rampup is no joke (thats what i'm on specifically at this time).

I never did one of Lyle's specific routines (I actually don't remember much of any routines I've done since I eventually just started winging it 100%), but I'm sure it's beastly. One thing about him is that he respects cycling both with lifting and with diet. So certain stages will be much more intense than others.

About viruses and health, you're right that they're not mutually exclusive and such. A skilled enough immune system essentially will laugh at any virus, and without the strength of a standard human immune system we'd all die in a day.

I've found it interesting that I've recently discovered that I personally do not get sick when I'm not around people. I guess that's why I commented on it

And I wouldn't worry about drinking/lifting if you feel fine. It's not like if you shouldn't do them they'll kill you. At worst they would just make you feel a wee bit worse than otherwise

I just more or less finally got the engine for my motorcycle back together. Just waiting on a specialty tool to come in the mail and then I need to set the timing (good luck to me since Ive never done this before.)

Then I need to finish fabricating a few things and then weld them to the frame. Test fit everything and then tear it back apart and paint the frame. I just hope that the motor that I built doesnt spew oil or just simply explode when I first try to start it..

Start by improving your choices when shopping. Choose to buy fresh things and shun stuff in a can, box or bag. Try to get fruits and vegetables local and in season, if you can. Meat from a good butcher is usually exponentially better than stuff in a grocery store. That's all pretty simple and picking out the best stuff comes with experience. When it comes to actual preparation, recipes are great and you can use a good cookbook, sure. They can lead to Level 1 thinking and be a crutch though. You'll eat better but if you truly want to acheive Food Nirvana the best thing to do is learn concepts and do a lot of practicing and experimenting. If you don't have time to read about food or take classes, the Food Network can be great for learning about flavour concepts and cooking methods. As with poker, don't try and copy what you see. Focus on learning the hows and whys and you'll shortly have mad, flexible skills you can use in any situation.

and eric Im amazed that you, being so into working out and all, have taken this long to figure out how good fresh food is for you. Really, unless you have some special dietary concerns, you dont need to learn how to "cook healthy" if you simply learn how to use fresh ingredients. The recipes utilizing fresh ingredients and avoiding all the preservatives and other crap that our body has no clue what to do with are inherently healthy.

A big part of this though is using things that are in season and local. When tomatoes are not in season in ohio then that means any tomatoe you buy in ohio has been picked green, shipped green, and probably gassed to artificially ripen it. These tomatoes have not had a chance to fully develop the vitamins and other nutritional bonuses that you get from them. I mean, its still better than eating ketchup, but youre just not getting the full effect.

Anyways, fresh produce is actually incredibly easy to work with and you can do all sorts of things, from basic to some really involved stuff. However the "basic" stuff often works best to highlight the essence of the ingredient though. So you can get some asparagus, onion, brussel sprouts, and bell peppers, cut them appropriately so theyll cook in the same amount of time. Then toss them in olive oil salt and pepper and then toss em on the grill and finish them with a squirt of lemon juice gives you a great hot grilled vegetable salad.

uhh ya... I def disagree with this. Method is way more important than ingredients from a taste stand point. Without understanding the importance of searing youll never make a good braise. Without understanding the dire consequences of overcrowding a pan youll never experience a scallop the way it should be presented. Without an understanding of emulsification youll probably never make a mayonaise, hollandaise, or even a good salad dressing; and if you do youll certainly not know how to fix it if it ever happens to break.

There are certainly methods that lend themselves to the everyday cook and are easier to pick up (just as hard to master though.) However their relatively low learning curve does not diminish their importance.

Awesome Greens

This will take you 10 minutes at most.

What you need:
- Some kind of green (This works with absolutely any edible green...spinach, beet greens, bok choy, swiss chard, rapini, whatever.)
- Some kind of acid (lemon juice or rice wine vinegar are my faves but you can experiment liberally)
- 3 or 4 cloves whole garlic
- Chicken or veg broth
- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper

1) Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok or saute pan. Meanwhile, wash and chop the greens if necessary (leaves will shrink so palm sizes pieces are fine).
2) Crush garlic cloves just a little bit with the flat part of a chef's knife or a wooden spoon. Throw them in the oil for 15-20 seconds.
3) Add the greens to the pan. Stir. Add salt and pepper or substitute the salt for soy sauce if you're into it.
4) After 2 minutes or so, add 2 tablespoons of chicken broth. This will help the greens steam a bit. Saute for 3-4 more minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally.
5) Finish with a liberal squeeze of lemon or a splash of whatever other acid you chose. Take out the garlic pieces before you eat (they were just for flavour).

Done. There are a lot of different variables you can use here to find a method you really like.

Look I understand there are basic methods that improve the taste of food, I've picked up on a few myself the last few years like beating chicken breasts with a meat mallet, roasting vegetables in the oven drizzled with olive oil, stirring some things constantly to keep them from getting lumpy, etc. I am just saying that the quality of the ingredients is the MOST important factor in how good a dish tastes. Even if you have zero knowledge of cooking methods you can still make a pretty great dinner by following the directions in any decent recipe as long as you use fresh ingredients that you like, so no one should be scared off because they "don't know how to cook." maybe they can, but their variance is going to be hudge. I guess thats pretty much what understanding basic methods of cooking does; it reduces variance.

For example, my sister makes great baked macaroni and cheese. However theres a ton of variance. She never seems completely happy with the end product, even though it is always pretty damn good and often excellent. The reason is because she is simply relying on the sum of the ingredients but doesnt understand what is happening to those ingredients when she mixes them, applies heat to them, and so on.

Not trying to be argumentative, and Im certainly not trying to scare anyone away from cooking, and Im not even saying that youre wrong. I just want people to have good results so that they keep cooking for themselves and stop eating mcdonalds
