Here's a short excerpt about feedback loops from a lecture by one of the co-founders of 350.org

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_iBGkSqFAw

Understanding climate feedback loops is relatively new to science. We don't know nearly as much as we should, but knowledge is growing, and all discoveries have been pointing in the same direction.

    Some examples

Polar ice acts as a big reflective sheet of solar energy. The warmer it gets the more this ice melts the less energy it reflects then the more it warms until there is no longer any polar ice. This is currently happening. Here's a super short video of satellite imaging of ice melt in the Arctic, more importantly it's imaging of the thickness of the ice, which is more significant to note than the quantity of ice. The red is the thickest and oldest ice that doesn't melt under normal summers, the blue is the thinnest ice that melts easily. Notice how from 1982 to 2007 the thick old ice massively decreases in volume. My prediction is that to the naked eye the changes will be very dramatic. One summer we will see a decent amount of ice on the Arctic, then the next summer there will be none simply due to all the old thick ice finally being replaced by thin wimpy ice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dpp2-...eature=related

Sequestered carbon and methane in permafrost below places like the tundra, taiga, and the ocean bed release due to warming then cause greater warming in the atmosphere which causes more chemical release. We do not know how far this feedback goes, but it's the most scary one since we can rest assured that there's so many greenhouse gases (GHG) frozen in the crust that if they all thawed we would turn Earth into some kind of inferno not too different than when dinosaurs roamed, mammals were nothing but rodents that lived underground, or possibly all the way to Venus.

Deforestation from logging and fires releases more carbon which then warms which causes more trapping of solar rays and more forest fires which deforests more. Not to mention that deforestation reduces the amount of carbon conversion to oxygen.

Oceanic absorption is limited. A vast quantity of the GHG we've released has been absorbed by the ocean. This is normal, but what is also normal is the ocean gradually sequestering fewer and fewer GHG until it simply stops altogether. This is a feedback of increased atmospheric GHG since less is being absorbed by the oceans. Interesting to note, atmospheric changes almost always, if not always, begin in the oceans. Anoxic events (abnormally low oxygen), for example, which has caused several mass extinctions over geological time and we think is responsible for fossil fuel formation, start at the bottom of the oceans and gradually work their way up to the surface and atmosphere. There are places on the ocean floor today that are anoxic where we see the exact conditions that, if across the entire ocean floor, would eliminate all large organisms on the planet, including humans.

Other things like oceanic currents slowing and shutting down, and entire ecological collapses like gigantic coral reefs or entire fish populations are not well understood, but are thought to have significant feedback effects. Also, there are others I don't really know anything about like desertification or water salination

ok gonna read that later wuf, important topic here:

so this girl invites me out to eat earlier, i show up and eat a pretty huge meal and drink a bud light bottle with it. we go to a bar shortly after and i drink a budweiser draft in a normal glass, say 16 oz or so. 15 minutes later (guessing) i test the breathalyzer in the bar for shits and giggles and it showed up as .08. wtf!!

tell me that can't be right? i weigh about 195 lbs and that seems absurdly high for 2 beers, especially with a big fatty meal in my gut which should arguably slow absorption.

They're pretty far along, but they are also infants compared to much of the rest of the world because they have small, steady populations and economies. They have worked for a long time to scale renewables to the degree that they have (which still isn't good enough), but in order for the US to get to their point we would basically need to attack this issue at like 50x the amount they are.

The kind of scales we're working with here are huge. For example: in order for the UK to switch to renewables without drastic living standard reductions, about half of its landmass would need to be used for a variety of different energy sources. Other examples are: China would have to build about a few nuclear reactors a week, the entire Sahara would need to be covered with solar panels not yet technologically developed yet, almost all of the midwest of US would need to be wind turbines, things like that. And we're simply not going to be able to do this in a few decades
So do you reckon that a country close to 100% renewable could survive if it used hydrogen fuel for its cars and techniques such as thermal depolymerisation for other uses (though idk how much oil a typical thermal depolymerisation plant could make in a day) ?

Also, I take it you class nuclear as renewable?

Hard to say. I'm relatively new to this, and most of the information on this subject doesn't deal with the nuances of hypotheticals. Also, there are other issues of not knowing exactly how peak oil is going to play out. At first I thought it would be a slow and steady decline after peak, but I'm beginning to now think that the decline will be very rapid. This switch in my thinking is due to recently learning what M. King Hubbert claimed and to the nature of exponential growth and doubling time. Like the professor in the video claimed, the exponential growth we've experienced in petroleum consumption determines that in our last doubling time we will consume more than the entire history of consumption combined, and this is a phenomenon that virtually nobody other than mathematicians and some scientists understand. This means that we could look like we have all this massive supply of fuel in the ground, but in 15 years time consume it all then the next year show up and have nothing. It could happen like this, but it could also be a steady but fast decline where a few years after we've left peak we will all know full well that we're fucked in about a decade. This would then allow for massive construction of renewables. It wouldn't be enough to sustain even close to current rates of consumption, but it likely would be a dent that would allow us to remain modern.

Having said that, our technology is simply not ready yet. We know how to create lots of great renewable sources, but we don't know how to do it cheaply. We're kinda like the Wunderwaffe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wunderwaffen . Germany had the tech, but not the engineering and scale to create weapons that would have won them the war. We're kinda in a Wunderenergy situation. We have the tech, so to speak, but not the engineering and scale. It will take some time, eventually we will get it, but that's going to be quite a while. Engineering high tech to economic scale is a process that takes decades, not months or years.

I'm a little out of the loop on how transportation will be fueled. What I do know is that we'll likely go electric for small vehicles, but for large vehicles we do not actually know. We hope that we'll develop biofuels enough to power airliners and semis. The problem with electric is that it's still really inefficient and costly. Currently, I'm pretty sure but check it out for yourself if you wanna know for sure, the internal combustion engine is still more efficient than our electric cars. Batteries are just really inefficient. I have no clue what we're going to do about air travel and imports/exports. Biofuels are probably a long ways out.

Also, hydrogen fuel is never happening. Many developers and governments are pulling out of it since it's amazingly inefficient. Also, some hydrogen vehicles emit greater carbon than their internal combustion equivalents

And yes, nuclear is a renewable, we're not running out of uranium any time soon. Nuclear is actually pretty amazing. Tech has come a long way since Chernobyl. Also, Chernobyl wasn't nearly as bad as everybody thinks and it wouldn't have even happened if actual responsible people were in charge. Even then, Chernobyl could never even happen in a Gen III reactor of today, and we're close to Gen IV.

Nuclear is extremely unlikely to be used on a massive scale at any point other than doomsday. A couple progressive nations are pretty gung ho about nuclear, but the rest of the world is irrationally scared to death about nuclear ghosts that don't even exist. As well as a major deterrent to nuclear construction is that no company wants to build one without their government signing off on responsibility if something goes wrong. Fat chance at most governments doing that any time soon. Only the governments of nations full of people who actually listened in Chemistry and Physics class will.

Not to mention that it takes several years to even build a reactor, not that many companies even know how to do it, and they're ridiculously expensive.

On a side note, we could get out of this economic recession and create amazing amounts of wealth so easily if we just shoved all our money into mass renewable production of which nuclear and wind turbines would be the best, and we would put ourselves in a much better position in the future, but LOL at that ever happening in our blissfully ignorant, government is evil, Jebus and Palin, omgwtfbbqsocialism climate.

As a direct response to your question, I don't know. We consume way more fossil fuels today than ever before. Our lack of some fantastic sources of renewables to date has not been due to cost, but due to special interests. These special interests will remain for a long time. People are dumbfucks. Most of us still think that there's a flying space daddy watching over our every decision. Peak oil is an abstract issue, and humans are not a species that thinks logically about abstracts without massive education.

  36. #2586
Speaking of being old... IQ increases as we age, and wisdom shoots through the roof due to experience. The negatives of aging are mostly related to poor use of physical and mental facilities. Studies show that old people who have lived their lives with low stress, high activity, and rigorous mental stimulation are happy, healthy, and fruitful.

Personally, few things are as cool to me as a cool old person. There is little that can compare to the intuition and wit of an old person with a zest for life. When you see an old person with a sucky personality, rest assured that they've lived a sucky life, and are only reaping what they sowed.

No they don't. There are also many negative feedback loops that would mitigate the effects of global warming.

-CO2 is a natural fertilizer. As the CO2 concentration increases, an increased plant population will absorb some of the excess carbon and serve as a buffer against global warming.

-The polar ice caps reflect solar energy, but so do clouds. As the ice melts there will be more cloud cover.

As you said our understanding of feedback loops isn't nearly as far along as our understanding of the greenhouse effect itself. At this point we really don't know whether the positive or the negative feedback loops related to global warming will have a more significant effect. Throughout history the temperature of the earth has gone up and down but feedback loops didn't cause it to turn into Venus, so clearly the negative feedback loops dominate the positive ones when we're talking about small changes in temperature. It's possible that human-caused global warming will bring about a larger change in temperature that will push us across a tipping point, but this is very far from the "current scientific consensus" that you say it is.

Also, from your reply to my other post, I agree with you that it's time to start investing a lot of research dollars in alternative energy, I just think you're too hard on governments that haven't done so yet. I disagree that we should start building a brand new alternative energy infrastructure right now. The problem with that is that the technology we have now is likely to be obsolete by the time we really need it. One example is the Scandinavian countries you mentioned as being models of transition to alternative energy. They built lots of windmills for wind power a couple of decades ago, which are so inefficient compared to the ones being built today, that instead of having a head start in their transition to alternative energy, they're now having to tear those windmills down and replace them with modern ones. I think it's a huge waste of money to force alternative energy on the world before we're ready for it. We'd be better off using the oil in the ground to improve people's lives as much as possible and meanwhile researching other energy sources.
  39. #2589
In our current climate, known negative feedback loops are dramatically less powerful than positive feedbacks, and both geologic and current evidence shows that negative feedbacks on both warming or cooling don't overpower positive feedbacks that easily or only at the extremes. We are currently in one of the most rapid warming phases in geologic history. ~0.8C in 100 years is a mind boggling change in geologic time. Data shows an average of around 0.18F per 100 years in its rapid warming phases spanning 10k years.
  40. #2590
nice debate, I hope it keeps going in some way

wufwugy, isn't 10k years a veeeeery small geologic sample size?

  41. #2591
    Yes

I was referencing something that Dr. Mitchell Hobish stated when comparing our current warming to another time of rapid warming about 50 million years ago. It was simply to put in perspective the massive degree of warming we are currently experiencing. It may actually be the warmest 'natural' trend in all history by several orders of magnitude. I don't know, but I've been trying to find out. I suspect that it is

    Actual Randomness:

On Wednesday afternoon, police tried to apprehend a wanted serial rapist from California who was staying with his parents. Ended up in a high speed chase at 4p. Rapist crossed the median, collided with a diesel tanker, spilling fuel all over the highway. Shots were fired and dude was pronounced dead at the scene. Highway closed for over 8 hours.

Fortunately I got the heads up right before leaving work and took an alternate route.

Four random kids from the neighborhood rang my doorbell at 10:00 the other night and sang "Jingle Bells" when I opened the door. I asked if they were doing it on a dare and one of them said straight-faced that they were "Just spreading happiness." I hate that fucking song.

    It seems terribly wrong.

Here is a calculator, although it's pretty generic:
    http://www.ou.edu/oupd/bac.htm
yeah, I've done those calculators before which is why I was so surprised by the result. Maybe there was still lingering beer in my mouth (i.e. didn't wait enough time), but it was probably pretty close to what a cop would make you wait after you got pulled over. Either way it was scary, bc I literally didn't feel any buzz whatsoever.

    Anyway, here's a first:

So I'm outside on the patio of a nice restaurant with my brother, mom, and grandma. I make a bit of small talk to the table next to mine with 2 parents, their daughter, and her boyfriend. On the way out apparently the two moms knew each other, and while that was going on the dad started mouthing off about how he wants to hook his 2 daughters up with me and my brother, and how the boyfriend of the daughter that was there was a tool and "on the way out" (not sure if he was talking about the job or just period).

So he gave me his cadillac-hummer business card and off I went.

Come to think of it, I have a lot of good stories from these last couple weeks and that was easily the worst one. Ah well, can't win 'em all.

interesting observation while i was on my way to chipotle earlier:

i'm at a red light, and in front and to the left of me there are 2 cars in the left turning lane with a protected left turn, yet neither car was moving nor doing anything. then the car finally went while the protected turn signal was turning yellow, and the second car went through when he clearly shouldn't have.

the surprising thing in all of this is the second car was so polite and didn't even bother to honk his horn once. myself, after about a third of a second i'm jamming on my horn; i think i do this because the horn on my car is one musical instrument that i happen to play well.

also, new lukie theorem on food:

if a food requires the active use of both hands to consume, it will always be delicious.

I honk all the time when I'm not being directly affected, like in the situation you illustrated. I don't get why people are just so passive in that sense.

I was in total driving-tilt mode today and I was only going about 1 mile to the bank, store, and back home. During that time some jackass was trying to turn left out of a parking lot (w/ no traffic light) onto one of the busiest streets in Dallas around lunch time, ya, thanks for wasting 5+ minutes of my time when you could turn right, drive 100 yards and U-turn at the nearest light. Perhaps I care too much about what others think b/c I'm generally going out of my way to avoid things like this, i.e. I'd never try to turn left in that situation, especially if such an easy/faster solution was readily available.

After that I got into one of those 4-way stop debacles where you clearly get to the stop-sign 2nd, yet the person who got their first is so paralyzed by fear that you either have to wave them to go, do a courteous, low-volume honk, or just go ahead yourself. I don't get these people, you could have like the biggest/baddest douchebag in the world but put him at a 4-way stop where it's not clear who got there first and he turns into a huge pussy.

Chipotle is damn good, been craving it for the last week or so, that shit is damn good. Tomorrow I think I will have Chipotle for lunch or dinner.

The honking thing, I usually wait a second or two before giving a courtesy "let's go" honk, trying not to be an asshole about it. I've been there, and done that, with being the first one at a red light and fcking with my phone/radio/something, and not realizing it turned green.

    More randomness:

I am now on facebook. I have like 94 friends or something already, which is probably too many, but whatever. I say it's probably too many because a lot of the people I'm friends with I haven't seen or talked to in 1+ years. Anyway, I get friend requests everyday. Some of them are like "holy shit" friends that I'm glad looked me up and/or found me. But most of them are people I was semi-friends with in high school or college, haven't seen or talked to in 6+ years, and people that I wouldn't know the difference if I never talked to them ever again until the day I died.

I'm new to the whole facebook thing. Do people just friend you "just because"? I'm thinking so. Also, what's up with ex-girlfriends and/or girls that I used to have crushes on in HS/college wanting to be friends? Trying to get my ass in trouble or what? Like this one girl tonight asks for a friend request. I was semi-close to her in high school, she was a year older than me, but my god I wanted to do the naughtiest things to this girl. She was awesome, too, so it was more than that......a crush that never came to fruition. Now she friends me, I look at her profile/pictures, and she's engaged to some fat douchebag looking guy (probably has money) and she's still *smoking hot*. It's just weird.

Everyone wants to be your friend on facebook. It's kind of weird like that. Some dude I used to pick on in junior high added me. Not that I'd still be an ass to him if I saw him today (I feel bad about it when I look back) but why the fuck would he want to be my friend if that's the only way he knows me? I've even done it though where I add someone thinking like "oh cool! It's that guy/girl" then I add them and I really have nothing to say to them so it ends there.

Regarding the guy not going when the light is green thing: The unwritten rule is you wait 3 full seconds then honk. If it's a protected left you wait 2 (smaller window before it turns red again). And if you're further in the line behind the guy, you add an extra second for every car between you and him before you decide the person in front is too much of a pussy to do anything.

three seconds is a long time, goddamn

ha, the friend thing is kind of funny...just so many people out of the woodwork. fcking kills me now having ex-girlfriends and/or people I wanted to have sex with friend me. It's like, yo, can we get together? Oh that's right I'm married. Damn.

Oh yeah, the ex-girlfriend thing. I am so 100% madly in love with my wife, would never cheat on her, would never leave her, etc. But I've got an ex-girlfriend that I'm actually "friends" with that I am just "omgwtf you're so hot holy shit." Every time she posts pictures of herself (and the husband) I'm like goddamn. I'm sure she does that when I post pictures of myself too (LOL).

P.S. only good thing about this is that my wife is even hotter, woot for me

It's so badass when you don't even have to *try* to veil your brags. <3

spenda I totally feel you on that "second to the top sign thing", usually the other person is being courteous (or just afraid) but in the confusion that follows it probably makes the situation more dangerous because nobody knows who is going and it ends up taking you just as long anyway.

gala 3 seconds is absurdly long. Seriously if you are sitting at a light and don't notice for THREE seconds it's been green you deserve to get honked at repeatedly and if I had a hummer or comparable war vehicle I very well might end up running your ass over.
