Seems like puritanical anti-sexuality nonsense, really.

I didn't see anything in the article that said the dissertation was poorly written or that the 3 month investigation was irrelevant to the greater PhD. Just a lot of kind-shaming prattle based on some stupid notion that building a body of knowledge about human sexuality is somehow problematic.

    News flash: People fuck.

We should study the ins and outs of that.
    Penetrate that well of knowledge.
Really pump the field for information.
    Reach a climax of understanding.
And spread that load to everyone.
Like so many pearls of wisdom.

A lot of kerfuffles similar to this going on around Iran I'm told. Beginning of the end for the theocracy perhaps?

It's one thing for them to shoot protesters, but schoolgirls? Don't think that's gonna fly.

The more access people have to view the world around them through internet/social media the harder it’s becoming for Stone Age theocratics to convince people that this is the only way to govern

A lot of social media is blocked in Iran. Facebook, twitter, youtube, netflix, etc.. There's ways around it, but yeah their gov't seems to realise the danger of letting its people see the rest of the world.

Wow that’s dangerous, but ultimately very brave of them. Taking your life into your own hands when you do that, but unfortunately it’s very necessary if you want to have any sort of backlash against this sort of barbarism

My backyard. That's the UK's last remaining short wave radio station, at sunset.

    And a cow.

Looks like a great view. I’d be out there drinking coffee in the morning as much as possible
  14. #30464
Well it's not literally my backyard, this is a short walk.

I still have a nice view from home, from this pov I'm just beyond the short wave radio station and I have a good view from my house of the big hill on the right. I can't directly see the radio station as it's behind the house and there's woods and a railway track in between.

I believe in democracy so I'm anti-royal on that basis, though I never had a problem with Elizabeth. It's not like I'm motivated by hate or jealousy, I don't care about their castles and wealth, it's just that the Royal Family is a relic from history and it's probably time we leave it there.

Well said. Canada is still attached to royalty by a thread but it’s also time we snipped that.

Other than Christopher Hitchens, what is Englands greatest export?
  18. #30468
Our greatest export should be flat cider but it's not.

I'd say probably the industrial revolution. Depends if you think that's a good thing or if we should be a civilisation of simple farmers drinking cider which doesn't sound too bad a life but hardly innovative.

And the Beatles obviously. ELO too.

Man I wish we had snow like that. It's a rare treat if we get anything more than an inch. Although with heating being so expensive right now I should probably be careful what I wish for. A nice mild winter might be best for all.

The amount of shovelling last year just about killed me. I can handle half that amount. I do need some snow and ice for winter because I like ice fishing on our rivers/lakes

We get a few decent dustings each winter where I am. Enough to cause a panic on the roads, and keep a lot of people home for a day, but that's about it.

If we get 6 inches in a single storm, that's on the large side, but not unheard of.

I remember about 10 years ago Atlanta got an inch or two of snow and the freeways were at a standstill for hours. It was funny to hear about and I rolled my eyes but I suppose it makes sense they would struggle with that considering how warm it usually is.
St. Louis is much farther North so I’d expect you to get some snow there. We get plenty here most years but I don’t mind the cold so much because it’s needed to drive on the lakes to go fishing.
I visited St. Louis for a half day once, just enough to go up the gateway arch and visit the settler museum underneath it which I loved bc I’m a museum geek

I mean... when I was living up in the Rocky Mountains for a while, I was trying to back out of my driveway, and my car started to slip sideways. I ended up sliding off the driveway and was just stuck. Thankfully, my neighbor saw it and pulled me out like it was nothing.

And no joke. I was barely moving, and when I pressed the brakes, the car slid fucking sideways off the driveway, which was apparently slanted.

It was just a tiny bit more slippery than I expected, and I was a danger to myself and my community. The worst is that I never suspected anything was amiss until I was totally out of control with literally nothing to do about it. Thankfully, I was moving at a snail's pace and no one was hurt.

Roads go from familiar and safe to unfamiliar and unsafe with very little warning.

Nice that you hit the Museum of Westward Expansion and went up in the arch. Riding up in those trippy egg-shaped gondolas is an experience to have at least once, IMO.

Was it a windy day? Did you feel the arch moving back and forth while up there? I love that. Others don't.

Fun fact: The look of the arch - the architectural lines and stuff - are reminiscent of 1970's style. But the arch was commissioned and built in the 1940's, and the designer had started on it in the 30's. It was so ahead of its time in that regard.

A funny thing about growing up in Canada was the first time it snowed each year people completely forgot how to drive on snow and ice and there'd be loads of fender benders. A week later, back to normal. It's like people just get in the habit of driving one way in the summer and it takes them a week to get back into being more careful again.

I think it was a little breezy in the arch. I remember moving a little which was fine but I think our guide told us it can sway a decent amount on a very windy day. If I remember, I looked out the arch onto the Mississippi and there was a large paddle wheel boat that was a casino anchored to shore. It was a fun day trip.

Poopadoop is correct. All concentration is out the window when winter first comes. Lots of accidents bc people don’t give enough stopping g distance. Our government managed, socialized insurance company gets overwhelmed by calls for the first week. So many accidents that they have started a loan program for people to buy snow tires.
  28. #30478
I don't think they have this problem in Finland. cocco should be able to confirm but I believe their driving standards are high compared to ours, you don't pass your test without being able to drive in the snow. Not sure if they have the same problem with adjusting when the season changes though.

Here in the UK everything goes to shit very quickly if we have a heavy snowfall. Airports close, trains stop, roads become impassable, schools close, children become hysterical, you'd think it never snowed here before the way we react to it.

I can remember being a kid and listening to the radio in the morning hoping my school was read out as one of the closed schools. It would mean a day of playing in the snow. Every time it snowed I'd listen. Sometimes I got lucky. One winter when I was a kid there was a lot of snow for the UK, I think it was '86.

    Snow days were the best.

I want more snow days as a grownup. We should demand snow days.

They're just good for the mind, IMO.

Likewise, but the amount of snow needed to cancel school in Canada is a lot more than here. I think we only ever had 2 or 3 snow days when I was growing up (though I didn't live in a very snowy part of the country, so might happen more often elsewhere).

With the first snow there's always some people that get caught with summer tires and end up crashing into things, but mostly it's not a problem. Snow isn't exactly rare here so people are used to it, maybe the mandatory snow training for a driver's license helps a bit also. I'd say the main thing is though that people use proper winter tires which are mandatory.
Our brains have just one scale, and we resize our experiences to fit.

  35. #30485
Yeah we just don't do winter tyres. We grit the roads and hope for the best.

    Dude's a fucking idiot.

He's accused her of cheating... because she called his big bet on a prior street when she was dead to rights and then she called his all-in shove when she was behind.

What was the cheat, even? Why is he even upset? He got it in with 4% edge in an otherwise flip.

Why TF is he even upset. If she was cheating... wouldn't every advice have been to fold at every street and every opportunity?
So why is there even evidence in her play that indicates she was cheating?

If he could have seen her cards face-up at every street, he should have WANTED her to call him at every street.

    WTF, moron.

EVEN IF she was cheating... her play was exactly opposite of exploitative in her favor and exactly in line with easily exploitable from his perspective. Don't tell your opponent when they're playing bad. Just keep punishing them for bad play.

    Moron.

Mojo you seem to have a completely different view to this incident that I do.

She called all in on turn with jack high, no draw. When her call turned out to be good, she looked embarrassed, the polar opposite to how I would feel if I just made the greatest fistpump hero call in the fucking history of live stream poker.

She is either a cheat or she has no idea what she's doing and is basically playing randomly. Given she has a 6 month profit I find it incredibly hard to believe she's incompetent, certainly this incompetent.

She gave the money back (I definitely would not do this if it was legit), she played the victim (accused Garret of bullying her), her hubby claims on Twitter she owned him like it was a brag that she failed to seize on at the time... oh and then there's the more damning evidence of her chair vibrating while she's "thinking" about her decision, some backstage guy apparently being furious she gave Garret the money back, the same guy then getting fired for stealing chips off Robin's stack, this guy then thanking Robin on Instagram for not pressing charges, it's a massive cheating scandal and if you're aware of the few details I've spoken of here it's extremely hard to think she is innocent, on the balance of probabilities. This is Mike Postle level certainty for me.

If she's cheating, then it's fairly clear she doesn't know precisely what Garret has. Presumably the information she is getting is binary (good or bad), or maybe a little more complex but not too much, like an extended vibration for the nuts (or close to). That tallies with the long vibration the chair has when she's facing a Q5 full house. The chair stops vibrating and then she folds.

There's also a chess cheating scandal happening right now and there were amusing theories of vibrating anal beads to send information. This probably wouldn't work in chess given the complexity of the notation (though not impossible), but it would be much easier in poker where there might only be three or four different communications. And if she does have vibrating anal beads up her bumhole, that might cause the chair to vibrate.

And it doesn't matter if someone is cheating badly enough against you that they're still making mistakes. This is one hand. Over a larger sample, obviously the cheating will give a huge edge. This is one of the rare occasions where it's basically still a flip, and she held out (twice as they ran it twice). Garret was seriously unlucky. I think it's harsh to call him a moron. How would you feel if you'd just been cheated of $100k? Even if she gave it back straight away, it causes you to question the integrity of the game you love. He seemed to act with relative calm imo.

The chess scandal, it was Magnus Carlsen who first blew it wide open by quitting a tournament after losing to Hans Nieman and then refusing to play against him. His evidence is seemingly analysis based, Hans' accuracy in some games is more aligned to Stockfish (the best chess engine) than other grandmasters, sometimes even having 100% accuracy. Either Hans is quickly becoming the best chess player in the world, or he's using Stockfish to help him.

I believe he is cheating, he's admitted to cheating in the past up to the age of 16, but I'm not close to certain like I am with Robin. Maybe Hans just really is this good. Time will tell, his accuracy has dropped since the scandal, possibly because he can't cheat at the moment, but also possibly because of the stress of the situation. I expect him to either become world champion, or get exposed for being a fraud.

Oh and one thing I didn't mention about the Robin incident is that the guy who stole chips off her, he had a view to the table and placed a filing cabinet between his desk and the office camera.

Doug Polk has covered this in detail. He thinks it is highly likely she is cheating, which is the strongest he can say without risking litigation. His disclaimer is basically "she could just be this fucking stupid". Nice.

Ong... your analysis lacks important information of the hand in question.
At no point was she ahead. At no point would any cheating indicator that was working in a way that was beneficial to her have told her to stay in the hand.

All the other shit around it doesn't even matter, 'cause if it IS a real cheating scheme, then please cheat against me in this way all the time. Please keep calling big bets when you're behind. Please keep playing rags against me.

If it's the Jx vs. 8c7c on TTc9cx board hand you're talking about, then yes she was ahead when she called the all-in. No-one would care if she just donked off her chips. It's the fact she called an all-in with J high AND it happening to be the best hand at the time, and having like 53% equity or something, that made people sit up and take notice.

I'm open to the idea that she cheated, but I'm more inclined to think she's just bad at poker.

Mike Postle was a much more open-and-shut case, as his cheating was so obvious. If Robbie whatsername was cheating, and trying not to get caught, why pick a hand that's going to make everyone do a double-take, and bring a lot of scrutiny onto yourself? Seems you'd want to be a lot more subtle about it, pick an odd spot here and there, where your play actually makes sense, then do it.

Also, she gave Garrett his money back after the hand. Seems like a weird thing to do if you're trying to look innocent. Either that or it's some 3D chess thing - but we all know how easy it is to ascribe 3D chess skills to someone who's just a lucky idiot lol.

Vibrating chairs is a poor theory imo. What, someone installed a vibrator in her chair when no-one was looking? Rigggght. Or, she had beads up her ass that vibrated so powerfully that it shook the chair? Goddamn, if that's true you should have at least seen it on her face that she was getting remotely plowed up the ass while the game was on. "Oh baby, ooooh baby, that's it yeahhhh...I call."

    Pre she called with rags.
OTF, he has OESFD. He's ahead in EV.
It was 52/48 when the all-in was called and she was behind.

At no point, except technically pre, was she ahead. And even pre, we'd all rather have his hand than hers.

48% equity is plenty enough to make calling an all-in correct when there's already a bunch of money in the pot.

If you put her hand in a GTO solver where it "knows" what his hand is, I'm pretty sure it never folds at any point.

Pre, if you know your opponent's hand you can basically play 100% of your hands profitably.

Flop, there's enough equity to see what happens on the turn.

Turn, it's basically become a coinflip and she should never fold.

You do realize that if she'd just played stupidly and won, no-one would be talking about the hand right? It's the fact she played it as if she could see his cards.

This is not quite accurate. We know as poker players there are two ways to "be ahead"... mathematically, and "in the lead". I can't remember the precise probabilities for this hand but I though she was the 48% dog, but this doesn't matter. Jack high is ahead of eight high. She might not be getting mathematical information. She could be getting "jack high is ahead" information.

And if you're happy for someone to cheat against you like this, prepare to lose a lot of money in 90%+ of hands and be maybe a 4% favourite very occasionally. It's not going to be jack high vs an oesfd every time.

There is actual footage of her chair vibrating as she "thinks" about what to do facing Q5 full house. When the chair stops vibrating, she folds. You tell me what's going on if it's not vibrating anal beads.

Now clearly she's not getting street to street information here because she's at the river with a bricked flush draw after Garret fills up on the turn. idk if she called a turn bet but if she did she's drawing dead. She can't know what shape she's in until the river.

But that chair is vibrating. It's a constant frequency, it's not like she's adjusting her seating position and causing a brief vibration, something weird is happening right there.

btw, important to note here, that even if she is a 48% dog, she's still making the right ev call because of the dead money in the pot. If she had got to the river without putting a single chip into the pot (impossible) then it would be a very slight mistake to call with 48% equity.

And with that in mind, she's still stealing ev off Garret by making calls that should be folds. Garret has a legit semi bluff here and she's robbing him of all that real fold equity with jack fucking high.

I mean if she isn't cheating then she's perfectly entitled to "rob" that equity off him, she has equity too that Garret is robbing by bluffing, but from a poker pov, an oesfd vs jack high is a legit bluff, not that a bluff needs to be "legit". You know what I mean by that though, he isn't getting out of line playing this hand in this way. Jack high is so ludicrously out of line all the way through this hand. Just fold it pre for fuck's sake. Absolutely insane she'd play this hand, cheating or not, and to play it like she did.

But she isn't this bad because she was on a 6 month win streak leading up to this event. Nobody can run good for that long playing this bad. If she was terrible, playing against the best players in the world, she'd be six figures in the hole over six months, minimum.

Tap your foot. Your chair will move. That's a lot easier to believe than that her chair or her ass or both were fitted with a vibrator and we just saw the poker equivalent of the Zapruder film.

As for playing bad and winning, variance, and 6 months in live poker is what, 2500 hands? Sample size.

We only have evidence from one hand that was played optimally as if she knew her opponent's cards, and a few where she tanks that were a bit funny. If she were cheating, there'd be a lot of suspect hands like the Jx vs. 87 one, unless she only did it selectively. But, if she was only doing it selectively, she wouldn't do it on a hand that makes it so obvious.

Nah, she's just shit imo. Polk is going for clicks here. Imagine he made a video and said "yeah, this was weird but without real evidence we shouldn't jump to conclusions." Clicks down. Instead he says "omfg her chair vibrated, guys, her CHAIR." Clicks up.

Where's the vibration in the hand at 3.00 where she makes a proper call as well? Or, does it only vibrate when she has to make a REALLY weird call?

Also, not a physicist, but enough force needed to vibrate a chair coming from beads vibrating in your ass doesn't sound plausible to me.

I mean... until and unless there's literally any evidence of some weird maybe sex thing being used as cheating and not as unfounded slander, then whatever.

People accusing someone of cheating and not having any possible evidence of how and then suggesting they hid something up their ass is ... not sounding like its evidence based to me. It sounds like a 10-year old's reaction.

I'm not beyond any scam finding its way into a high stakes poker game, but ... if it hasn't been shown to have ever happened, I'm pretty dubious.

    ***
On a similar but unrelated note... the investigations of the Nord Stream Pipelines have conclusively shown it was explosions from outside the pipes that ruptured them.

So when evidence comes out that backs this up, I'm happy to let my skepticism of ong's certainty go to the trash.

I'm not going to pretend I'm not amused by the anal beads theory. I have an immature sense of humour. But I also think it's the most plausible. I can't believe you guys are sitting here talking about this like someone profitable on a live stream can ever play poker like this.

There is no evidence of anal beads except for a vibrating chair. If you don't think that's really odd, fair enough. We're not talking about the guy who got fired for stealing her chips though? We're not going to talk about him addressing this on Instagram, thanking Robin for "not ruining my life" by pressing charges? We're not going to talk about why he would do this? He claimed he didn't know it was Robin's stack. He's also the same guy who was seen being angry when Robin gave the money back. His office desk was hidden behind a filing cabinet so the camera couldn't see him. That was literally the first think Doug Polk saw when he was given access by the card room, who I might add are taking this a lot more seriously than Mike Postle's card room took that incident.

This is a slam dunk, at least from the pov of casual observers. Proving it in court might be a different matter, but a court couldn't convict Postle either.

You're not thinking about it critically.

Let's assume she has someone backstage helping her, sending her information. Maybe this guy can't see every hand. Maybe he gets a look at a villain's cards only at certain times, when he exposes them at a certain angle perhaps. Lots of speculation but the fact she isn't cheating every street of every hand isn't even close to evidence in her favour. It's more than once, and in the case of the jack high hand, it's ludicrous.

The backstage guy is not acting smartly. He's not feeding her info when she can use that without raising suspicion. Neither of them are smart enough to cheat effectively. How can you believe someone is stupid enough to play jack high like this but not stupid enough to cheat like a moron?

btw Doug Polk himself thinks she is cheating. He's risking litigation by saying that with the public profile he has. He's not talking about it on a forum with four people. He's talking about it on social media to hundreds of thousands of people. For him to take the risk, he must be certain. Doug Polk is a good guy who wants poker to be clean. He has been cheated, he knows what it's like to be a victim. I give him a lot of credit, at least when it comes to his motivation. Maybe he might only be interested in youtube views, but I don't believe it. He could get those views while staying safely on the fence.

Doug was given access to the backstage area, and the first thing he said was "whose desk is this?". It turned out to be the guy who had been fired.

I mean, this could just be a massive coincidence. But so could Mike Postle's sick play, right?

Not true. You can voice any opinion you want as long as you're clear it's just that, an opinion. If he said "she definitely cheated," and stated it as fact, then he'd be open to libel law. In fact, his language is very careful that way, he goes out of his way to make it clear that it's just his opinion.

No, you're not. You're trying to connect every dot and explain everything when the fact is all the evidence is circumstantial, and even then it doesn't add up to >50% chance she's cheating, never mind the >95% you'd want to make such an accusation in the first place. I'd say it's closer to 30%.

Your case boils down to the one hand that was very weird (which I'll grant). The rest of it is maybe this, maybe that, maybe something else. You've come to a conclusion and now are trying to bend the facts to support it.

I've played against people who did batshit stupid things against me and won. They just decided I was bluffing and they called. Happens more often than once in a blue moon. And it's striking, I get it. But to jump from that to "they must have cheated," is lame imo.

The best thing about this hand has to be Garret's face after she flipped her cards over. That was priceless lol.

Robi is likely just a huge donk. We can't credit donks with realising how bad a call is. But it wouldn't surprise me if there was cheating going on in that game. We just can't say the evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of cheating- unlike the Postle incident.

If it was a slam dunk, everyone would agree on it.

Everyone agreed Postle was cheating, no-one said "nah, he just played 1000 hands in a row perfectly because he's a poker god.

That was a slam dunk, this case is not.
