You probably don't really care, but it stems from the fact that we have a bunch of separate states that in the beginning didn't want higher population states to completely out-number hence out-vote the states with less people. Therefore, we have a Senate and a House of Representatives which make up the Electoral College.
Just as with today's globalization of our economies, our country has nationalized in its maturity. Our country started out more regionalized and states had more power than the national government. When forming the national government the founding fathers had to create a framework of government that would make the states want to join as a nation voluntarily, therefore gives states much more power hence the accomodations for the voting system. Nowadays the national government is much, much bigger & more powerful. The electoral college system is probably outdated now that our states are nationalized or melted together for most intents and purposes.
