Slightly random, but regarding Pulp Fiction. You can get the script on the net if you google it, and even just reading it, it's so fucking good, just totally sucks you in. Great for killin some time if some time needs killing.

Awesome link. Confirms what I though. Thanks.

What a series. Not sure if I should avoid a starting a new series for a while to avoid an immidiate comparison followed by the inevitable disappointment.

Considering Sons of Anarchy next. Anyone seem any of it? Any thoughts?

Sons of Anarchy is good. The 3rd season was a bit of a let down compared to the others, the 4th season was completely awesome. I can't wait for what's next!

agreeee....S3 sucked but S4 was awesome.

Tarantino's breifcase is a macguffin it's contents are not important to the plot only the fact that it is desirable to the characters. Like the microfilm in old spy movies.

Eactly. This was not the case with the Sopranos ending.

Oh, ok. I thought you thought otherwise. I have not watched the Sopranos, so I don't really know what all is being talked about.

    ******************* POSSIBLE SOPRANOS SPOILERS ****************************

I'm really not sure how DanArong or anyone else is arguing that some blog post about the ending gives the "definitive" answer. Chase has said nothing about the ending. Therefore, we don't know. It's still the Pulp Fiction suit case.

******************* MORE POSSIBLE SOPRANOS SPOILERS ****************************

Chase simply hasn't answered the ending for people. But he basically confirmed that the ending isn't ambiguous. He said everything is in the episodes of the last season for you to figure out what happened. Meaning, he had what Tony's fate actually was in mind when he created the finale.

There's also this amazing blog post Ken Jennings wrote a few years ago about the ending that brings up wayyyyyyyy more stuff I never noticed and more stuff than the previously linked blog post brought up. It was a really good read. But he has taken it down since then because he didn't like all the attention it was getting. It was up for a few years though so I'm sure it can be found with some site caching engine.

Also, the stuff people see in Sopranos just blows me away a lot of the time. I never realized what a surface viewer I was with tv shows, until people started writing about all the deeper hidden messages in shows like Sopranos.

Gala pretty much answered this one, but the key difference is the suitcase contents were designed to be unknown and are actually irrelevant. All that matters is that the contents are some impressive shit that Marcellus Wallace wants. Quentin Tarantino said he orinally planned on showing diamonds in it, but then decided not seeing the contents made it more interesting for the viewer.

The last episode of Sopranos may have been a little subtle, but the obvious interprertation becomes more obvious the more you dig and as Gala said, Chase stated that everything is there to figure it out and he was trying to convey a particular outcome so imo any alternative interpretation is clearly just kidding yourself. But then again, I guess subtle is ambiguous for the thick, and a lot of people are pretty thick.

    **** spoilers

I'm willing to concede that Tony was gat. It was my thought on the first viewing as it's what makes the most sense, but then I saw that there wasn't supposed to be a correct interpretation or something, yet now that I see the creator or whomever said he was trying to tell something non-ambiguous, it pretty much means he was telling the story of tony getting gat

    *****

I did not like this show as much as everybody else, and don't agree with all the subtleties. I could be wrong on that since on my first watch I really liked it, but second watch I was fast-forwarding a lot and lamenting how huge of douchebags the chars were. But the insight into character is better with Tony than any other show, I guess. I certainly felt there was a whole load of repetitiveness and swill in the show even though it adhered to HBO standards of still making what should be subpar good.

I find it weird that the top two consensus shows on 2p2 seem to be Wire and Sopranos. I thought that Wire was clearly on a different level than Sopranos, but whatever.

The wire and sopranos are both fucking awesome. I don't agree with what y'all think happened to tony. I think your meant to feel for the first time what it's like to be him. And thats it, it ends like it started in the middle of nowhere. I could easily be missing the point I saw it when it was shown on tv and haven't watched it since. I like my ending tho. T forever
  16. #691
wire def > sopranos for me, sopranos had like a 3 year stretch when I just hated everyone on the show. Plus the dream sequences, I'm done with dream sequences forever. last season was terrific though.

did anyone watch the first 3 episodes of The Firm? I used to love reading John Grisham books, and so far this show looks true to form. Supposedly the first season is already approved for a full 22 one hour episodes.
watching, plot is good, writing sometimes terrible. Much like JG! The fast forward in time gimmick is a bad idea imo because it brings damages to mind which features much better acting/writing. And wft are they thinking with the lead's contacts?

But any show with two BSG alums has to be doing something right. plus the chick from deadwood! 4 eps in I'm more or less over the shock of seeing how old Julliette lewis is which helps.

Sopranos did dream sequences better than any show I have ever seen. They managed to present that surreal "dream logic" and dream continuity that no one else seems to be able to do.

That being said, I fucking hate dream sequences.

Dream sequences are inherently flawed in that dreams are just stupid in the first place. In many ways, dream sequences don't have a place in cinema.

I also hated the psychotherapy stuff. It was a whole lot of chaff and was a sort of narration and "tell instead of show" thing. They tried to contrast it to the gangster stuff to show who Tony really was, but it got boring, unimportant, and is a lazy and less powerful way to do it

My recollection on this might not be the best though because I ended up skipping most of therapy on second viewing. It was just that lame I guess
  19. #694
The few eps I have watched of the Sopranos, I just remember mind numbing boredom during the therapy scenes.

I'd put sopranos in the top 5 for me somewhere, but six feet under and wire are higher.

OK, so looking for a specific type of show. The show should have a universal type of humor that doesn't rely heavily on dialogue, verbal communication, etc. Any verbal communication must be in English. Basically, I need a show similar to Mr. Bean.

I'm planning on showing students some video in class as a treat where they have to write what they see, etc. Mr. Bean is perfect. It would be nice to have a back-up.

Benny hill? Famous in the UK for his comedy show that would generally culminate in him (bald, old, ugly) being chased around by a group of hot scantily clad young women, but speeded up with silly banjo style chase music. Could also be the ideal intro to your ulterior motives as a teacher.

Janice sucks. She's the worst. She makes me hate the show. This adds to my All Women in Shows Suck theory.

Yeah I always just have to fast forward anything with his sister or mom.

While I commend your assertion that women suck, I'll raise you an Atia of the Julii and Servilia of the Junii, Lucille Bluth, Annie's Boobs and Gettin Ridda Britta, and pretty much the entire female cast of Firefly. Honorable mention: the chicks in Modern Family

I didn't like Elaine in the later seasons. Why did she become all bitchy and too good for them all of the sudden? I liked her character more when she was like a cute little sister to them.

It seemed to be timed with her hair. 80's style wall of hair was awesome Elaine, normal wear it down hair was bitchy Elaine.

The episode where she lost the top button for her shirt when she sat too close to the screen in the movie theatre will always hold a special place in the memories of my adolescent self.

grunching, but has anyone watched How to Make it in America? Wife and I just finished season 1 and its a solid show. Sort of similar to the first couple seasons of Entourage in style with alot of the same team producing/directing. Its a shame that season 3 isnt going to be made.
