I think I may have seen Central Station. If it's the one I'm thinking of it was good. The thing is that I watched highly regarded, obscure movies about 3x a week for over two years, and I've forgotten many of them. I do remember some from Central Station though
Mcat, you may like films by Kar Wai Wong. I don't, but that's not because he's not a good director, I just don't particularly care for his storytelling methods. He is a very talented director, though, and others find that they very much enjoy his storytelling. One thing I remember about him is that he does extremely interesting camera work. Most of the time I found it annoying, but some of the time it was absolutely brilliant.
I personally have a difficult time with Asian cinema since I have difficulty telling the actors apart. I guess that's part of why my favorite Asian films are the ones with very few actors like Dersu Uzala, Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring, and 3 Iron; or ones with very recognizable actors that stand out like Mifune or Nakadai in just about anything (Miyamoto Musashi, Seppuku, Ran, Sword of Doom, etc)
Speaking of not liking directors even though they're talented. David Lynch probably takes the cake for me. I don't like any of his movies except for one, which I love. Straight Story, but that's because it was the only one where he actually didn't do all his weird stuff that makes me dislike all of his other films in the first place. The guy is a superb director, but man I cannot even sit through any of his films other than SS. You couldn't even tell SS was directed by him though because it's just so different, and, uh, normal.
