just watched Le Pacte de Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf) for the second time (first time was like 7 or 8 years ago when it first came to dvd.) This movie is so awesome. I really am not sure how to describe it... you just have to see it.

I side with you boost most of the time. However, there is no way I am going to watch that sappy Victorian looking shit.

Speaking of Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci, somebody watch Irréversible (2002) and tell me how it is

Supposedly, this film is good, but also has the worst rape scene of all time. I've wanted to watch it for a while since I love me some fucked up shit, but for some reason, I draw the line at rape. Can't handle that shit.

youre failing, miserably. srsly man, theres an iroquis warrior who does martial arts with a tomahawk. How can you pass on that?

another werewolf movie, this one a fairly cool retelling of red ridding hood, is company of wolves. Mind you, its from the 80's, and the special effects/set design are pretty dated (sometimes this adds charm, and in the case of the set design it does.. special effects.. meh..) I dont think this is some great moment in cinema, or a must see, but I guess Im on a bit of a werewolf kick lately.

I'm gonna have to look for that one.

I also once watched Zombie Strippers, starring Jenna Jameson and Robert Englund (as the club owner) It was as corny as you can imagine. It was incredible.

I liked Frankenhooker a lot. The ending is surprisingly emancipated for that kind of 80's movie.

I just re-watched 13th Floor. It's along the lines of Dark City, Jacobs Ladder or the original Matrix if you haven't seen it. Highly recommended. More highly than Frankenhooker. But Frankenhooker is good too

Half way through I stopped it to check imdb thinking it has to be another grindhouse fake trailer, but it has a release date! I don't believe it until I see it. This is going to be the best movie of all times ever!

I thought it was a joke trailer when I saw it before Planet Terror.

    This looks awesome.
  17. #242
it was a joke, but got such a following/response that it became an actual feature
  18. #243
holy shhhhhhhhhhhit! I clicked the link earlier today, but it took too long to load, and I saw it said "machete." So I just closed the window thinking it was a trailer for some stupid slasher flick. Then I read oskar and drew's responses.. wish I had been patient before. This is epic!

I did like the aviator, good stuff. Going to watch Memento and Adaptation soon.

From Paris with Love was decent, I like Travolta when he's violent . I also didn't mind the Bad Lieutenant. The role actually worked for Cage, which hasn't happened for him in a while. I also liked Book of Eli, but none of these would be nearly as good if I had paid $15 to see them on the big screen.
  21. #246

wasnt gladiator pg13? Obv I prefer R so that they dont water stuff down, but pg13 doesnt necessarily mean it will be bad.

    no it was R

Book of Eli isn't out yet but I needed something to watch. It was one of the few that I figured i wouldn't mind watching in a weaker format. (Telesync)

really? I watched a bootleg of it and I kinda regret that I did. I dont think I would have loved the movie, but I do think its more of a visual movie. Also theres a lot of heavy contrast in scenes, harsh desert sun and dark dark shadows, which doesnt translate well to cam rips.
  28. #253
    Iron Man 2? anyone?

For older movies "Unfaithful" was good. Any movie where Diane Lane says "Fuck me...Fuck ME!" is
  29. #254
I hated Iron Man 2. The action scenes were way too few and short, story and dialogue vomit inducing. My gf loved and my two friends thought it was just OK.

I can't fucking wait for Inception.

Used to be one of the best of all time. Only movie that I'm aware of where the sequels officially retroactively ruined the original. You can never watch it the same way again after seeing Morpheus as a techno god in a mel gibson wet dream of a dystopia.

Oskar, you might like City of Lost Children. It is futuristic and surreal, but not sure if Noir. It does get mentioned a lot in the same sentence as some you listed. Personally, I HATED it, but I understand that I loathe what I consider weird movies, and COTC was definitely very weird, but some people who know good movies love it

La cité des enfants perdus (1995)

My favorite Noir by far is Brick. It's sort of a modernized Noir, and not futuristic or anything. I don't watch much Noir, but loved this

    Brick (2005)

Also, not Noir or scifi, but whenever I think of dark, I think of The Proposition. Greatest western ever made. Even better than Butch Cassidy and Unforgiven. A lot different than those though. It's much more sinister and realistic IMO. Also one of the most underrated. Easily arguably top 10 of all time

    The Proposition (2005)

Also when thinking of sinister and dark, can't help but mention Silence of the Lambs. I love that type of intellectually creepy shit way too much

City of lost children was great visually... it's a while since I've seen it. I don't think I particularly liked it, but it's the kind of movie I'm looking for.
Will check out the other two.

Speaking of Noir: The Matese Falcon is one of the few classics that I really liked. The characters in this movie!
    - Useless trivia: YouTube - Adam Savage: My quest for the dodo bird, and other obsessions - adam savage talking about his hunt for the maltese falcon.

ya.. so sad.. so very sad.

Tbh, I still love the Matrix, I just completely ignore the sequels lol. I think I've seen those once while I've watched the matrix a good 10-20 times.
  44. #269
The Matrix sequels (like almost every other series that ever existed) suck in comparison to the first, but I still watch them, and they never made the first one any worse by their existence.
  45. #270
I liked Reloaded...but yes Revolutions did suck.
  46. #271
Ya, reloaded was pretty cool, because it was like the lobby scene in the first one, times a million.

Also, empire strikes back was by far the best, and return of the jedi was better than IV.
  47. #272
Away We Go with John Krasinki (The office and Leatherheads) and Maya Rudolph (from SNL) was pretty good, didn't think I'd like it but got into it.

The Ben Asslick film will end up with a rating somewhere above 7.4 yet not surpassing Gone Baby Gone at 7.9. It will be good, but not a world-beater. Trailers are almost completely unreliable. Some of the best movies have the worst trailers, vise versa.

Also, all a movie has to do to be good is follow a standard checklist. Great film, however, is an entirely different thing. The Town will very likely be able to follow that checklist well. It's a baffling state of affairs when the vast majority of film can't even do that.
  57. #282
Also, it's got The Croop (Chris Cooper)

He's among top ten most underrated actors, not even close
  58. #283
I think the town will be awesome because it looks like Heat but in boston, and anything that is similar to Heat, which was supremely awesome, will likely be at least standard awesome.

If you truly believed that, why did you give yourself the Ben Affleck out?

If you knew this was going to be Heat in Boston (which itself just sounds sad), you would have come in here saying, "Watch this and prepare for your mouth to water, gents." But you didn't. You floated on the Ben Affleck angle, so if it were to flop, you could shake your fist damning the Affleck for tricking you again.

You hope it's going to be awesome, but you've been let down before by the Heat-alikes. Like a woman in an abusive relationship, you find every reason to come crawling back, admit it!

Affleck is a good director, but he's not Mann, and I don't even particularly dig Mann. It will take more than Asslick and Croop to get up to Heat

WTF hollywood... this movie is 2 years old and they're remaking it scene for scene with an american cast. What's the point.
    Let Me In (2010)

The original is brilliant btw, but wtf is this shit.

I just realized this wasn't the movie un-recommendation thread. Too late.
    Predators isn't very good either.

'mericans dont like hearing moonspeak, nor do we like being made to read in the movies.

    mur'ca, fuck yeah.
  65. #290
closed captions are almost always better than not.

Due to my genetic hearing impairment, I watch all my film with subs or CC, and so my friends have had to watch them as well when we watched them together, and over time they all decided that they prefer the subs/CC because they realized that even with their super hearing they still miss a lot of important dialogue
  66. #291
I will not put subs on for american english, but I will if I'm watching a british movie with heavy accents and I feel I need it. And also I was obviously mocking my fellow 'mercans as watching foreign movies with subs doesn't bother me one bit.. especially since the alternative is dubbed which is only acceptable when it comes to hong kong cinema.
  67. #292
I put subs/cc on for everything that I can (except live sports, the cc gets so far behind it drives me nuts) for the same reason as wuf's friends. And besides missing potentially important stuff you can also catch some of the more subtle stuff easier, which is pretty awesome sometimes.

I first became aware of your english/merican language barrier when I watched lesbian vampire killers and it came with english subtitles on by default. And I'm like wtf, it's an english movie!
I'd understand it if it was scottish or gaelic, but brittish english? It's just a funny accent with a few extra words.
    What gives?

Equilibrium is without question one of the best sci-fi/actions ever made. Neo who? Morpheus who? John Preston FTMFW

I'm still baffled at how Emily Watson landed the 'hot' female role opposite Bale.
  75. #300
I agree ftmp wuf. They took 1984 and turned it into a sci-fi/action movie, how fucking awesome is that? But then they gave 1984 a happy ending... Still, its on par if not superior to the matrix (talking about the first matrix ldo.. when they are considered as a body, eq crushes them outright.)
