Ong, forget about football. Here's the Trump admin arguing in the appeals court that soap, toothbrushes, blankets and mattresses are not part of "safe and sanitary conditions" that are required under the Flores Act and thus need not be provided for minor detainees. This is to argue that the Trump administration has not broken any laws by forcing minor detainees to sleep on concrete floor in space blankets with the lights on and not providing them with soap or toothbrushes as has been reported by delegations visiting the camps.

Ok so I'm outraged. What now? Should I default to a pro-immigration position?

I'm certainly not in favour of treating immigrant children like criminals. And even failing to provide these basic things to adult immigrants is unacceptable. There's no excuse for it. There are other ways to deter illegal immigrants crossing the border, and that's to deport them.

If there's something I can do to change this, please let me know what it is I can do. If you expect me to hate Trump passionately, that's not going to happen. I don't find hatred of foreign politicians to be particularly healthy. I have enough contempt for our own politicians.

What in the world are you going on about?

I'm talking about African immigrants trying to get asylum at the southern border. You're talking about African immigrants in the northernmost part of the continental US.

I think Trump has the least personal autonomy of any leader in recent memory. He seems to be almost exclusively driven by the desire to please his voters. I don't love it when people call a leader "the symptom, not the cause" because I think it unduly absolves the leader from responsibility, but it has never been more true than with Trump.
So no, I don't want you to hate him. I don't hate him. When I look at him I see a pitiful pile of daddy issues, desperate to please strong men... I will celebrate his death, but I think those can be separate.

Obviously nobody can do much. I do not understand the americans reluctance to protest especially given their comparatively successful history of protests. As europeans... whatever politician runs on sanctioning the US as long as they keep supporting the genocide in Yemen, the human rights abuses in for-profit prisons, keeps employing extrajudicial law enforcement agencies like ICE, keeps running Abu Ghraib and Gitmo and keeps employing no-accountability mercenaries like blackwater - gets my vote.
