The issue is that with him it's a choice between a dentist in Somalia or a bus driver in USA, and for you and me between a dentist in Somalia or a dentist in USA.

That's oppression? I think you need to look up what that word means. To be insulted by idiots is not to be oppressed.

I can't walk into America and get job as a dentist, even if I'm a qualified dentist. I would be treated the same as the Somalian. In fact, he'd probably get preferential treatment since I'm British and therefore not coming from a war-torn country.

Maybe an American has a better chance of getting a job as a dentist than a Somalian. I don't see what the problem is there.

So... I'll ask again... would you rather be a dentist in Somalia, or a bus driver in USA? Because I know what I'd rather be, and even if I were a qualified dentist driving a bus in America, I'd still be happy to be a foreigner who is employed. Eventually, I'll become an American citizen, and then maybe I can be a dentist.

We were talking about privilege, I just ignored you moving the goalposts.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I disagree. Why would US businesses prefer employment of people from war-torn countries? What would be your thought process as a US HR person recruiting dentists?

Huh? Of course I don't. What I said is that when 2 people with identical qualifications are treated differently based on where they're coming from or what they look like, it's a problem. This has zero to do with any kind of entitlement.

That didn't happen. What did happen was a black man became President of USA, and served two terms. He is still considered to be a highly influential politician. Obama is not oppressed, not even close. Does he suffer racist abuse? Of course he does, that is sadly inevitable. But unless he is being denied opportunities due to his race, he is not oppressed.
So because Obama and Oprah aren't oppressed, the blacks should all just stfu?

If America were in need of dentists, if they were inviting people from around the world to apply for vacant dentists jobs, and if white people were getting employed but not black people, then I would accept there is a case for institutional racism.

If a qualified dentist can't get a job in America because America has enough dentists, but he still gets a job as a bus driver, I don't see the problem. If he wants to be a dentist, if he wants to maximise his earnings while using his qualification, choose a better country to go to, ie one that requires qualified dentists.

Maybe he should try the UK. Most of our dentists are foreign.
