ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—Ndamukong Suh(notes) was fined $20,000 by the NFL on Wednesday for a hit on Cincinnati quarterback Andy Dalton(notes), the third penalty of its kind for the Detroit Lions defensive end in the past year.

Suh didn’t like it much: He responded on his Twitter account before practice: “$20,000REALLY???!!!”

I know, right? What was he thinking? Competition at the highest levels requires the utmost restraint. Too much effort ruins the game.

Video: Ndamukong Suh Gives Andy Dalton The Jake Delhomme Treatment - Pride Of Detroit

There's the video, since I posted that without actually knowing what we were talking about.

Serious comment is this: It's lame that that hit is a penalty, but it's close and understandable. It's pretty lame that that hit costs 20k. It's really lame this is the state of rushing the passer in Goodell's NFL.

he latches on to his head, dalton throws the ball away, and then he rips/jerks/body slams him the other direction like 2 seconds later, of course that is going to be a pentalty and a fine.

the "hit" on delhomme last year was even worse. it was actually 3 penalties in one: a blatant facemask followed by a hit to the head followed by (again) a body slam to the opposite direction AFTER the ball was released.

some of what the nfl has been doing wrt player safety might be going overboard but rules to penalize/discourage these types of plays are sensible and good for the game IMO.

I'm not going to try and defend the Dalton or Delhomme hits because both of then were bad and clearly deserved a fine (the Culter fine on the other hand was bullshit). However, I don't think Suh is a dirty player and I love the way he plays. There was nothing premeditated about either of those hits. If you've ever seen Suh give an interview, he's one of the most intelligent and level headed NFL players I have ever heard speak. So while those hits turned out pretty ugly, both of them were a result of him giving maximum effort and aggressiveness on every single play he lines up for and nothing along the lines of him going into the games thinking "my goal this game is to injure the quarterback".

Suh gets his arms on the QB as the QB throws the ball. If Suh doesn't know this (possible), and there was no whistle (there wasn't), he's got to bring the guy down. He does swing his hips and bring the guy down, but it's not that hard. I didn't recognize the first time I watched it that he grabs the head, though. That does pretty much make the difference.

it depends why you posted that. but there are no reasons that would not be clowny. Bengal fans know we suck, no I don't want action on this bet, no it wasn't funny, yes I just want an excuse to hang out with bikes/plant the seed early that he should be at the WSOP.

I remember you and that's why I get sad internet you is not up the same standard.

Just looked at the Suh on Dalton hit. Looks like a pretty blatant/obv. penalty/fine but I don't think it's necessarily indicative of a dirty player, there are probably 20 dirtier plays every game (of course most involve linemen and no one cares about them).

  25. #100
Yeah, baudib has it right. It was aggression without awareness and awareness builds as a player matures.
  26. #101
yeah it wasn't dirty to me but the 'body slam' is going to get flagged every time, head grab part is less clear to me, says more about helmets that don't fit. dline is for sure the hardest position on the field now, knocking down passes may be the new sack in a couple years.

how did the bengals look? Game not broadcast here in columbus, I guess it was on tape delay in cincy because the game was not a sellout - surprise! Going to be bitter if the panthers win the Luck stakes.
  35. #110
I didn't see the game, we got the Skins and I was following the Eagles on cbssportsline.com and Twitter.

Panthers taking "franchise" QBs three years in a row would be fairly unprecedented, although this is a league that gave you the Matt Millen GM era and Al Davis' annual draft hilarity. Newton apparently seemed clueless.

A guy I follow on Twitter, Joe Goodberry, says Bernard Scott (better than Benson) and Michael Johnson have been looking good so far. Gibril Wilson, not so much. Obviously Dalton played well.
Playing big pots at small stakes.
  36. #111
yeah scott has always looked awesome but never gets enough time, somewhat due to injuries. but it was hard to tell for real because the bengals have a trick in most preseason where we'd leave the second team in long after the other guys had 3-4 string guys in. hasn't seemed to work this year since the first team can't beat anyone.

    Developments re: Eagles

mostly all positive, even in odd ways

Jason Kelce, 6th-round draft pick, got the start at center. New OL coach much prefers smaller, athletic players, and the incumbent is Jamaal Jackson, who's a hulking beast. Kelce was pretty atrocious, allowing a sack, contributing to a fumble on a snap with Vick, and drawing a penalty. This is probably good news because Jackson is a top-notch pass protector who was sorely missed last season and the OL doesn't need anymore on-the-job training than is necessary.

Danny Watkins, 1st-round pick at RG, also had a rough first quarter. The line didn't give Vick much time to get the ball downfield and RT will be an interesting dilemma until some guys get healthy.

All news was positive on defense: rookie MLB Casey Matthews looked a lot better; Kurt Coleman looks like a real player at safety and the corners played predictably well. DT Mike Patterson returned from a scary seizure and had a sack. The Eagles look remarkably deep at some key positions: CB, WR, DL and it would seem that some more minor moves could be made as starting-caliber players are on the bubble.

this is good analysis, and given the depth of the eagles i wouldn't be surprised if the browns picked up another eagles cut or 2 (or send another late round pick over...)

my friend made a comment the other day about the browns being the eagles triple A farm team, which makes sense in some respects given the coaching and front office connections and generally less talent across the board.

I was wholly unimpressed with the browns yesterday, although the defensive line showed some nice flashes (or the eagles O-line is much worse than I thought). Taylor looks like a potential beast in the making, mitchell looks good for a career nobody, sheard showed a burst off the edge although runs himself right out of any run play (not sure if this is part of the scheme or not), and rubin is still a very large man. but man, watching the browns receivers go up against the elite philly corners was kind of scary as a cleveland fan.
  45. #120
How was Sheldon Brown for you guys? Brown was as good a corner I've ever seen who never made a Pro Bowl. He has great instincts and is very good vs. the run and it really annoyed me that they didn't consider turning him into a safety when Dawkins grew long in the tooth.

Dmitri Patterson looked all-world for a game (against Peyton Manning, no less) last year and then got scorched by double-moves all season; he's strictly fodder.

I don't think the Eagles are a fair test for your receivers (they admittedly appear to be a non-descript group) as I am certain I've never seen a team that could put three former Pro Bowl CBs on the field at once.

Also the Eagles' DL is also pretty deep/good and the new DL coach has the ends split so wide I think I could get 8 sacks a year playing DE for them and they're getting better pressure up the middle, too. Stopping the run will be amusing.

Don't follow college football much but I try to watch Texas when I can -- always liked McCoy.

How many carries does Hillis get this year?

It was a good game til the 4th quarter and that's with Shaun Hill in there and a far below average LB corps and secondary.

Not saying its going to be a different story with Stafford, and upgraded LB corps and secondary, but I mean, it should at least be a solid game all the way through.

    Some significant Eagles news:

Jeremy Maclin and Steve Smith both practiced for the first time today. Maclin is obviously a HUGE part of the offense, a budding superstar who was Vick's favorite target. Smith is two years removed from a 100-catch season so if he gets back into playing shape he's ridiculously overqualified as a 3rd/4th WR.

More importantly, they made the move a lot of us have been waiting on for a while: Todd Herremans moved from LG to fill the gaping void at RT (Vick's blind side) and put Evan Mathis in as starter at LG.

Because I love watching Detroit lay out Tom Brady on his ass multiple times, while simultaneously watching Matthew Stafford own face.

I'm a Lions fan, any time we do good, we get pumped ldo. Too little to cheer about 'round these parts.

I'll be a lions fan this year if you become a steelers fan. 1 to 1 trade. You abandon your team, I abandon mine and we make the swap.

    I'll pass.

I prefer the glass QB to the raper.

I read someone compared Suh to Reggie White. I suppose he is the closest thing in this age of 250-lb DEs and 2-down DTs.

What is up with Stafford scorching the Pats D?
Playing big pots at small stakes.

He has a big arm, he's fairly accurate, and he has a ton of targets vs a Pats defense that wasnt fielding everyone, but yea he had a monster game.

yeah I like Stafford, I just thought the Pats had fixed this defense this year.

I like the Lions to make the playoffs.

detroit lions preseason before their 0-16 season: 4-0

patriots preseason before their 16-0 season: 2-2

in all seriousness, i like what the lions are building. good qb + weapons on offense + ferocious pass rush is a winning combination. i would bet against them making the playoffs this season, though.

I'm just going to wait until the Staff Infection (that's my new nickname for Matthew Stafford...it's awesome) takes a real hit in a real game without getting hurt before I get terribly excited.
