Upper East Side can be very expensive and certain parts are very exclusive. It is a great neighborhood, but yes, you will spend a fortune for a 400 square foot apartment (if you can call 400 sf anything but a box). Generally, apartments closer to the subways are a bit more expensive. If you don't need to take a subway to work or don't mond walking, I suggest looking a few Ave's away. To avoid paying a broker commission (which can equal one month's rent), comb the classifieds of the NY Times or the Village Voice.

There are a ton of great bars and hangouts on 2nd and 3rd Aves from the 40s on up. I am sorry I cannot give you any suggestions for for cheap eats (except for Gray's Papaya).

I spent a weekend there and cheap, good food was everywhere. So I wouldn't worry.

Cosi is great. I didn't propose it because a sandwich and drink can cost $10 if not a bit more.
I agree with 500lb, there are a ton of cheap places, but I can't think of any "musts" to go to. Gray's is diff from King. I believe you can get 2 hot dogs and a soda for $2.
If you like pizza, Patsy's on east side is a must. Don't fall for the "Famous" whatevers Pizza (Famous Rays is overrated).

Mainly just stay away from high tourist/traffic areas. Those are the places where prices go from 1-2 a slice to 3-5 a slice.

I don't know what I was thinking....
But I do distinguish between people who like pizza and can eat it from any place and pizza snobs - like me. I will only eat pizza from certain places, like Patsy's, John's Pizza (few locations), and Joe's in the Village. I live on LI now and there are a few excellent places.

yah Im a lot like you, sure Ill eat some not so great pizza when drunk, or just really really hungry. But its a terrible thing being dissapointed by pizza. Its a fairly simple thing after all, dough cheese and sauce. How you can have an establishment serving pizza that is not good, I do not understand.

Even worse is bad hotdogs. Theres a hotdog stand right by my house, and they just arent good. Buns always soggy, hotdogs always tasting like theyve been boiling in the water for several days, ect ect.

the best i've had is santapios(sp) boston, so far
and up here in NH the best around is a place called ramuntos
excellent by NH standards
