i know im like a week early but too bad, i'm going to put on an NCAA bracket on yahoo.

Scoring will be pretty simple, correctly picking first round games are 1 pt, second are 2, sweet 16 are 4, elite 8 are 8, final 4 are 16, and correctly guess the champion and you will get 32 points.

Also there is an upset bonus, for every upset you successfully call you get the difference between the seeds as well as the points for that round. For example lets say you call a 12 over 5 upset in the first round successfully. That would net you 8 total points, 7 for the upset (12-5) and 1 for the 1st round victory.


You must ship to me first if you want to join in, PM me and i will tell you what name to ship to (stars preferred then absolute and if you really do not have anything else i can do FTP). I would like to think i've got enough street cred on FTR to be able to escrow this sort of thing, if not we can all decide on one together.

Maximum of 5 entries per person.

The bracket doesnt come out until this sunday, you will then have until the wednesday afterwards to get them filled out.

I am doing this on yahoo so we will have a page where everyone has their picks locked in so there is no cheating.

Payout structure depends on the number of entrants but i am definitely pushing for a top heavy payout.

I kinda like the bonus points for the upsets, but just off the top of my head I think one point for the seed difference with the first round games starting at 2 points sounds a little more fair. I don't have excel here at home and i'm too lazy to dl open office, but I can crunch some diff point scenarios at work this week and see how it works out.

If you want the 12 over 5 to be worth the same as getting a sweet 16 winner right, then yours works. But imo it gives too much credit for picking first round upsets, which aren't always that hard to figure out. Also, if you're going to allow 5 brackets, i think $10 works better, but $15 is fine too.

and badandy i am down to see what everyone wants to do as far as scoring, i just think there shoudl be some reward for picking the upset....and also in this 1 if you pick a 4 to get to the elite 8 you would get 12 points, obviously more than a 5/12 upset....but either way i am open to suggestion

also, does 32pts for picking the winner of the championship game seem like too much? iirc it seems like final 4 games and the championship game get the same amount of points in most pools.

not any that i have played, but if we are not goign to do the upset scoring i say we do the fibonacci scoring or w/e w/ 2-3-5-8-13-21 as the score by round....this way the championship game is only worth 10.5x a first round game instead of 32x a first round call.

We can tweak scoring through the week but i still think doing the Fibonacci is going to be best if nobody wants to reward upsets. They do not have that option on yahoo so we would just completely ignore that and i would do it by hand and post scores in here nightly.

In - i'm used to the 1,2,3,5,7,10 from my big pool back home. Not really against the 2 3 6 9 14 21 that much... BUT if we're discussing, the 2 for 1st round vs 3 for 2nd still rewards more for early round picks. If that's what you're going for, then it's fine. I just think the points should be worth progressively more each round, not take a step back from one round to the next like the one you have up.

edit: not progressively MORE... just not less than the previous round on a per game basis.

And now that i actually think about it - the scoring i'm used to does the same damn thing, just between rounds 2 & 3 instead of 1 & 2.

The point i'm trying to make is about picking the one and dones - that's the reason i think the 2nd round needs to be on an equal points per game basis as round 1. If not, then there's no reason to not pick a bunch of random upsets outside the 1 - 4 seeds and hope you bat better than .333.

if the first round was so important but you got the same for a victory no matter what, why would you pick a bunch of upsets, it would make more sense to follow vegas and or the seeding, as the team who is seeded higher is more likely to win.
