I mean.. there is a reason that the fork is set to the left of the other utensils. But having said that I believe it is also proper to use a spoon with your right hand. Yet you use a fork more often, which trains your left hand to be good at scooping. So using a spoon in my right hand feels incredibly awkward.
But back to the American style in regards to knife and fork usage. The idea of cutting up all, or a large quantity of your food into bite sized pieces seems impractical and boorish. You may as well dump it in a trough, after you've managed to cut it all into little bits, then dive in disregarding the need to use your hands at all once it has been processed into bite sized chunks. And its impractical because food is normally served hot, and hot food cut into small pieces will cool faster. Lastly, I just hate it from an aesthetic vantage. The continental style allows you to wander around the plate, taking in the sights and smells, and only disturbing the presentation as necessary. On the other hand, the American style is like fishing with dynamite-- it manages to get to point B, but it renders the journey a dull affair, a chore of sorts...
