    Default Let's Discuss Pierce Brosnan...

Eating in this scene (2:05 mark)

YouTube - Thomas Crown Affair (1999) - Dinner Scene at Cipriani

who actually eats like this? it seems unbelievably baller yet I've spent my whole life cutting with left hand and fork in the right (I'm right handed).

FTR who balls out like this?

btw it's quite possible this is the worst thread ever yet I'm a bunch of beers deep and have been out in the sun all day so IDUNCUR

I've always switched and it sort of blew my mind to think of cutting with my left hand (I'm a righty).

Eating utensil etiquette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fork etiquette in Western social settings takes two primary forms. In the European style, the diner keeps the fork in his or her left hand, while in the American style the fork is shifted between the left and right hands. Both styles are common in the United States[3] but the American style is almost completely unknown and considered improper in other countries.

The European style, also called the continental style, is to hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right throughout consumption. Once a bite-sized piece of food has been cut, it is conducted straight to the mouth by the left hand. There is no need to put down the knife.

I heard once that ballers cut with their dominant hand, using the other hand to hold the fork, then switch back to the fork in the dominant hand to eat the cut piece, cutting no more than the single piece of meat they plan on eating that bite.

I couldn't be bothered to confirm this, but I do it anyway, just to be safe.

Yea, I always cut with right hand (I'm semi-ambidextrous though so don't know if it counts) and eat with fork in left. Was never taught that way and never really thought about the etiquette of cutting/eating food. o_O

so the baller/European way is to cut dominant hand, eat off-hand, and also do so with the fork prongs upside down

gonna start pimping this shit out and see what kind of reaction I get

    I'm so confused...

The Indian way. Eat right hand / wipe poop left hand.

naw i cut right hand and then usually switch fork back to right hand to eat cut food, then again i usually cut almost everything with my fork in the right hand except steak

i use cutlery that way (as per the clip) cos that's how i got taught to use cutlery

i'm guessing it's good to hold the knife in your dominant hand cos you never know when you're gonna need to get involved in a knife-fight. Wonder what they teach at marine corps

Wow, I thought everywhere that had any kind of western etiquette had fork in left and knife in right. This really fucking annoys me though! In spite of the fact that I find this incredibly comfortable and natural, I hate the fact that someone is dictating something as pointless in my life as which hand I hold a fork. How can it possibly matter? Yet sit in a restaurant with a bunch of people and do the opposite and people would comment on how you're a fucking spastic and can't hold a knife and fork propperly.

One other random and stupid dining etiquette rule I am awere of:

    - If you have a bread roll on a side plate, it is inappropriate to cut/slice through it with a knife prior to applying butter, the roll should be torn with your hands.

Like seriously, who gives a fuck!!!!

I realize in my sunburned haze I misspoke in the OP

I hold fork in left, knife in right, but then switch, putting fork+food in right hand before eating.

this is in no way baller but was taught to me as proper etiquette, knowing I could have been a badass eater and have done so within the lines of proper etiquette my whole life is a bit tilting.
  14. #14
Depends who is around. When I eat with my idiot friends, I just stab and jam. When I eat with my snooty friends, I'm all Brosnany.
  15. #15
you seriously switch up your eating style based on who you are with? rofl, fuck having any friends who care how you hold your knife and fork

I thought everyone ate like that.

why the fuck you would want to be swapping hands everytime you cut/ate? seems stupid.

Do Americans continually switch fork hand during a meal?

they need a little break to catch their breath after cutting (strenuous activity ldo), so swap hands to facilitate a break ( to avoid the awkwardness of just sitting their panting/sweating), before shovelling their gobs full of food ( with fork upwards lol).

Fuck etiquette. How you cut/eat should be based on what's comfortable. I cut with my right hand (righty). If what I'm eating is cut/stab I keep the fork in my left hand. If it's cut scoop then I'll shift the fork to my right.

For true ballah cutlery usage try eating a bowl of cereal while grasping the spoon overhand and shoveling Lucky Charms into your mouth. Most ballah if you use a large tablespoon or serving spoon.

European style makes sense. American style is fucking retarded. I wouldn't really mind if someone I was dining with used improper (non-continental) etiquette, like I wouldn't be offended, I would just think they are a fucking retard... like people who hold pencils in a way that if only looking at their hand you'd assume they had cerebral palsy.
  33. #33
so Boost you eat with the fork in your off-hand?

I find no one I know does this, I was hoping you'd chime in with your culinary background.

  37. #37
I mean.. there is a reason that the fork is set to the left of the other utensils. But having said that I believe it is also proper to use a spoon with your right hand. Yet you use a fork more often, which trains your left hand to be good at scooping. So using a spoon in my right hand feels incredibly awkward.

But back to the American style in regards to knife and fork usage. The idea of cutting up all, or a large quantity of your food into bite sized pieces seems impractical and boorish. You may as well dump it in a trough, after you've managed to cut it all into little bits, then dive in disregarding the need to use your hands at all once it has been processed into bite sized chunks. And its impractical because food is normally served hot, and hot food cut into small pieces will cool faster. Lastly, I just hate it from an aesthetic vantage. The continental style allows you to wander around the plate, taking in the sights and smells, and only disturbing the presentation as necessary. On the other hand, the American style is like fishing with dynamite-- it manages to get to point B, but it renders the journey a dull affair, a chore of sorts...

Wow this thread is tilting me...Boost's post especially.

If you are right-handed, do you eat with your left hand when you don't need a knife (basically every meal where there is no meat to cut)?

I certainly do not. So why would I not use my right hand to eat my steak?
  42. #42
I hold both forks and spoons in my left hand. I use chopsticks with my right hand.
  43. #43
I start with chopsticks in my right hand, but then end up with one in each hand using a stabbing method, if I can't find a fork.

I'm left handed. I hold the knife with my right, fork with my left, and eat. Fork tines down unless the food in question necessitates some sort of scooping (like peas).

I was vaguely aware that the zig-zag method existed, but had no idea that it was common.

People really eat with a knife in their hand through the course of a meal? This seems odd and menacing.

I'm not an expert on etiquette by any means but generally in the U.S. generally polite people keep their off hand on their lap while eating. I know in Europe (at least in France) this is considered rude.

yeah when eating, say, pasta which only requires one hand I keep my off-hand on my lap and get made fun of here (in germany) for doing so. This confuses me greatly, as their alternative is that I should have my other hand resting on the table, when I was brought up that that would be more in the direction of rudeness as it's taking up more space.

    cereal or eggs for breakfast

pasta, stir-fry, lots of different rice dishes (wife is asian ldo), more pasta, chinese, japanese, indian, etc...

Occasionally, we will have a dish with meat that isn't already cut up, but this is mostly in the summer when we can BBQ. And for those times I cut the meat with my right hand and I eat the meat with my right hand because eating with my left is like throwing a ball with my left...UNPOSSIBLE

just eat with the fork in the left

side note: i'm definitely good with my right hand, but i may or may not be ambidextrous. i've never really been able to conclusively figure it out. i think to a certain extent, i was always 'told' growing up that i was right handed so i tended to do the vast majority of difficult tasks as such. however, i seem to be able to pick up new things or 'catch up' on things very quickly with my left. the one glaring exception seems to be body rotation, i.e. pivoting on my left foot counter-clockwise is very powerful (think baseball, muay thai, etc), but pivoting on my right foot clockwise not so much.
  67. #67

I probably could have been more clear on that, but yeah in that case you would be pivoting on your right foot but the body rotation part stays the same. Although I will add that when I played college baseball, our hitting coach taught us basically to pivot on both feet, sort of a Jim Thome-esque swing, but I'm still not sure I agree with it. But I digress

I think I have done the whole right to left body rotation (i.e. counter-clockwise) in so many sports with so many different movements.. think throwing a baseball, hitting a baseball, ping pong, volleyball, fighting sports from an orthodox stance, and there's a whole lot of carry-over from all of those that it might just be a case of having to do stuff from the other side for a while. I don't know honestly.
  69. #69
Pivot on both feet...hmmm. Were you landing on the ball of your foot? I'm not even sure I can do that.

heel of left, ball (or heel?) of right? I think after a while they just kind of gave up on trying to convert me and I would only pivot on the back.

    interesting point.

I eat european, but with prongs upwards a la shovel. I don't get how people do prongs downward and bring their food bite together on the plate and then try and balance it on the top of the fork, isn't it easier to just shovel that shit up? Anyone with me?
