    Default identity theft

Today my neighbor told me his garbage can was stolen. I thought he meant that someone wanted the can itself but he said it was taken when it was full (and that this is fairly common). The thieves sift through everything to see if they can steal an identity. Make sure you use a shredder before tossing personal information...

Wow this is sort of random but no doubt useful advice. Hope everything turns out okay with your friend.

I'm absolutely OCD about everything I throw away. I freaking hate getting junk mail because it means more for me to shred before I get rid of it.

But anyone can just look up your name in a phonebook to get your name, address and phone number so why do we need to shred our junk mail?

Obviously, we need to shred stuff like bank statements though...

    That's what you think!

I'm just paranoid as fuck when it comes to indentity theft, so I just shred everything. Only takes a bit more effort.

I have a metal trashcan. Every time I go to put the trashcan out, I add some lighter fluid and burn everything.

Yet you're ok with sleeping with me, but I guess I'm just a soul stealer; I don't steal identity.

Lots of records have personal info on them. Hell my credit union used my SSN as an account number until a few years ago. Also they can take a preaproved CC application and change the address among other things. When in doubt...shred.

This is good advice. Someone stole my new credit card last summer and charged 8K to it. I guess they had some of my personal info, otherwise they couldn't have activated the card.

The wife signed up for a new Aerogold Visa (since they had 15,000 points free for new signups). Card never showed up. She called for status and said that someone called and activated it and that someone tried to go to a branch and withdraw money from it.

Now, they never called her after any of this. Strange?

She also had her driver's license go missing around the same time.

Oh, and your personal info shouldn't be in the garbage. It should be in the recycling. What kind of hick town you in anyways?

working myself up to FTR fullhouse status while not giving 1 solid piece of advice
one of the worst things are those credit card checks - We had those stolen out of our mailbox about a year ago and they wrote $6,200 worth of checks....So now anytime I get a credit card I call them up and tell them to NOT send me those stupid balance transfer checks...those are super dangerous...

To activate your new credit card, you have to call from your home telephone. That means they must have hacked into your phone line somehow and called the CC company from your house.

    ...bastards.
