    Marry Me Cheryl!!!

Default I got a job today...so why do i feel so sad

Working for LA fitness (a healt and fitness company)
    basically im a phone operator.
    £12000 per year.

About half of what im making from poker at the moment.
I guess i needed the security at the moment, but man going from like 40-50hrs of poker a week to maybe 10-15 is going to take some getting used to

I might have to move to stars now just to get a decent amount of hands in every week.

nope, you will find out what working is like and move on. Poker will find time, it always finds time. GL and keep looking even though you are working.

You should have asked in the interview if you could multitask and play poker while on the phone.

My thoughts exactly, couldn't you make more money playing poker than you could at entry level jobs? Also, imo, those jobs will be there in a year or two or three if you get sick of playing poker for a living.

First time someone raises his voice, or he get's chastized for being late, he may sing a different tune.

We all wish you luck miffed, It's just alot of us hate the daily grind, and to see somone sacrifice poker for work (and less money) it throws us off.

If poker is here in 12months it'll be here forever, and my thoughts are that the UK govt will lead europe into legalisation and regulation. Therefore ive got all the time in the world to reinvest my 50k roll into poker. Fwiw, i think i can persue a career whereby ill be able to create enough time to put in to poker and remain seriosu while persuing a career too. Just because im doing a 40hr week right now doesnt mean in 12months i will (ive planned ahead(i could be a teacher like UG, plenty of time off, or even a prison officer which pays even better and gets more time off))
Also, if i play poker and dont build a CV in 5years i may have to quit poker if i suck/it collapses which would be horrible. If i build a CV i can work for 5years while staying semi-competent at poker and maybe take a year out of work in a few years after i gain some experience in the workplace and try being pro.
I think you gotta understand as well ive made the big cash in my br within the last 6months and im still getting used to the fact of how much i can potentially make, im also lukewarm to the 'pro' idea at the moment, which is odd i know.

Post of the month. Finally, a bit of perspective. People on this forum have seriously warped ideas of what "career" means where poker is involved. I'll bet $100 that fewer than half of the $600NL+ players on FTR will still be playing for income in 3 years time. Who knows, maybe someone like Gabe will stick it out - he's got the skill, patience and disinterested attitude you need - but many of the rest either seem too fragile or have already expressed dissatisfaction.

But for the rest of us, forging an actual career - the conventional kind - is almost always going to be the best move. Relying on poker to still be the cash cow it is today in 5, 10, 20 years time is incredibly unwise. There'll always be a pro circuit - it's a spectator sport these days, after all - but for the online grinders, things WILL change. We just don't yet know how, but who wants to be discovering they have no qualifications and no career after a decade of sedentary, solitary grinding?

in reality there are jobs out there where i can work hours that will fit in with playing a major number of poker hands at high stakes.
The only *problem* is that i need to take the time to get myself to that level of employment experience before i can consider doing it. Saying that, if i could get myself into the position to play as much poker as i would do work then im quite secure in the knowledge that unless i actually suck hard then ill make it work.
But yes, unless you have an education already and poker is ctually paying for things like houses (ilikeaces posted hes buying a house with poker money) then i think poker has to be considered carefully, especially in light of the fact that the US govt seems destined to have it outlawed overthere.
Sure, a movement is beginning to grow in the UK that thinks the UK govt is 'in-bed' with the glamour casino's but then organised crime wont be able to take a hold here as it has done elsewhere simply because of the slightly different way our society is made up.
meh im rambling but yah, going pro is overrated considering i have good prospects.

I think the other thing to note is that if you have the br to start playing mtts on the pro circuit, and win a majot mtt then pro works really well as you can earn enough money in one shot that ensures you dont really need to work anyway because you can fork out for a house, car etc in one go and forget about security.

I think your making good decision. It is best to play it safe now and then and with the changes going on to poker, it is a great idea to have a safety net and another reliable source of income. Not everyone can play poker for a living (me for example) so It is important to have other options. I'd LOVE to be a pro. poker player, but honestly it just isn't feasible right now so I go to college in hopes of getting a decent paying and decent fun career and then I'll see where im at with the poker thing.

    good luck.
