I get that it's an American thing and honestly don't have much desire to talk about the politics of the situation. In rural/conservative areas owning a gun or guns is absolutely the norm. In many urban and especially liberal areas (think New York City, California) the laws and culture are much different.
Where I live it seems to be somewhat split. Lots of friends/family are gun owners and lots are against it.
While I do have a non-American mentality on gun rights/laws, I didn't want to make a personal view statement in a thread meant for people that enjoy guns to enjoy their guns. I was merely making a reference to what I thought was a hilarious line from the Simpsons.
