To the contrary sir Brett, I actually almost always prefer the book to the movie version BECAUSE I have a vivid imagination. It's easier for me to immerse myself in a book than in a movie. This just happens to be maybe the one instance where the books were meh but the movies were like FUCK YEAH, DEATH AND DESTRUCTION WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWW!!!

Should probably note that I was 11 when the first movie came out.

The books are not fucking better. HBO is telling it in a more concise, logical fashion. I've decided to stop reading the books and just wait for the show to run its natural course.

Maybe because I thumbed though a dozen or so pages of LOTR, or I don't know why, but I had a feeling that I would feel this way if I read the books. I still could be wrong, you certainly seem to be the odd man out, but seeing someone dissent gives me hope that I've made the right choice.

However, I am very curious to know how many hardcore (watch each ep several times, spend countless hours reading and participating on forums, etc) non book reader GoT fans will be left by the time the show wraps it's final season.

yer such a spoiler drama queen that it makes me want to spoil everything I've been already had spoiled about the third book. It's not a very imaginative troll admittedly, but it just seems too easy to pass up.

    This statement is invalid.

It's like saying I've decided that the moon is flat. Your choices have no power here.

The books are better because they aren't logical and concise but sprawling and capricious. The spirit of the story that has Eddard Stark's head lopped off by a boy king's flash of inspiration is informed by this.

i read the first two hundred pages of fellowship of the ring twice yet still couldnt get beyond the unbearably long exposition phase. dont tell any fanbois, but tolkien is only popular because he was the first

I read the LOTR books when I was 12. I remember really liking them, except for the Tom Bombadil stuff. This was also left out of the movies, for good reason. (he was some kind of powerful wizard, but he didn't help with crap and just sang constantly) I don't think reading the books after having seen the movies is really worth it though.

And regarding GoT, it's so good that I don't feel inclined to read the books either. But I remember when I watched Legend of the Seeker, I'd hear a lot of complaints it was such a weak adaptation of the books, that I ended up reading them.
  12. #987
How was Legend of the Seeker?

I've been contemplating picking up some fiction, recently. I don't think I've read any fantasy, except for a pretty cool version of young King Arthur/Merlin (the actual title/author escapes me) when I was pretty young. Keep in mind, I really disliked the bit of Tolkien I've read. And I'm not sure if it helps, but my favorite author (not that I'm very well read) is Orwell, and the the most recent fiction I've read is Edward Abbey's The Monkey Wrench Gang, which I thought was fantastic. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

I really enjoyed that show. But I have to place it into context, I'm a big fan of the fantasy genre, and there are very few TV shows in this genre, so it was refreshing to watch. Unlike GoT it doesn't have mass appeal though, and was canned after 2 seasons. If you like fantasy, you should give it a watch though. Just don't read the books first or you'll be endlessly annoyed by all the changes they made.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the books. I'm kinda tempted to read some fantasy books. I don't really want any more TV shows right now. Deanglow is already forcing Luther on me.

ASOIAF makes me want to read a war-political novel more than it does a fantasy novel.

Agree with Rilla; ASOIAF is more like Shogun or War and Peace than Lord of the Rings.

Martin has some absolutely incredible moments that LEAP off the page; I don't want to get any more specific than that, but he has serious skills as a writer. But after 4,000 pages or so, I lost my appetite for finishing the series and just want it to be over.

What the TV show has is absolutely incredible casting, the best I've ever seen for any show. Not in terms of sheer star power, but the opposite: getting every single character absolutely perfect. If, 20 years from now, someone else does this, can you envision anyone else playing Tyrion, or Ned Stark or Cersei?

Yeah, up to this point, there really hasn't been one miscast imo. Except maybe the second mountain. But that could just be the bias of having been introduced to the character through a different actor-- and even so, they were put in a tough spot, and didn't do all that poorly.
  20. #995
Have to agree the cast is amazing, with Tyrion up top, but strange you mention Cersei. I find her one of the few that could have been cast better. There is some subtle awkwardness in her behavior that shoulda been confidence.

I really hated her ( the actress in that role) for a long time, probably all of season 1, but she's grown on me tremendously. And now I couldn't imagine anyone else. Maybe I started giving her a huge pass after reading (seeing?) an interview with Dinklage, where he tells how they are really good friends and that he nudged the casting in her direction. Also he goes into detail about how she is not in the least bit Cersei IRL, and that it's such a leap for her.

I tried to convince my friend to watch GoT by showing him the trailer to season 3. Dumb idea, he was totally unimpressed. I also told him about all the deaths, torture, fights. Not much of a reaction. Now I have a better plan, gonna tell him about the boobies. That'll work.

Nah, he's a good friend. Just depends on a person's taste. When I about GoT to another friend of mine, we've always into fantasy together, dates way back to highschool, it turns out he had already read the books. So he was dying to see the show, and kept bugging me to give him season 1 and 2. But the other friend, he's only recently gotten into watching lotsa TV shows through computer instead of TV. And I have ~5 GB of that stuff. But atm he is more into comedy shows. After he goes through that phase he'll still have to watch Breaking Bad and The Wire. But Game of Thrones is on his list somewhere.

Btw new ep should air tonight. Can't wait!

if dany doesn't appeal to her morals and burn the slave city to the ground, i'll be sorely disappoint

had a feeling giants were going to show up. had something to do with the way they were mentioned in the first season i think.

not a fan of the night's watch fighting off that horde of walkers and zombies. they didn't show it, but certainly implied it. the problem is that the horde was quite sizable, and if the band of 30 men could beat them then mance's army with giants would be able to crush the entire population of baddies posthaste

knew davos wasn't dead, that much was obvious. i feel like he has a long road before him as well.

stannis and melisandre are possibly the most exciting storyline because it has the most mystery. for all we know, she could be epicly powerful.

so happy barristan showed up. i forget where, but i was kinda spoilert on him finding dany

i still feel like the best lore for this show is having the poles as opposites where the south is a molten volcano land that birthed dragons and the north is frozen ice caves that birthed the walkers (and giants), and they periodically fight between each other, but then the melisandre thing is a new dark evil magic with no historical reference. i doubt this is the direction though. it's probably more of an asymmetrical smorgasbord of lore. if it was in that direction then the walkers would need to be less northy icey and more melisandrey evily. but ofc melisandre is very firey as is, so it looks like the lore is convoluted about which side is what, since dany is also all firey and stuff
  50. #1025
No mention of Tyrion wuf? I thought he had some heavy scenes.

Quote Originally Posted by jackvance View Post

I was a little underwhelmed by everything in KL because they already have waaaaaay too much material to work with the lore aspects: dany, melisandre/stannis, snow/mance/walkers.

I think I will need to read the books because I can tell that for the show to truly do justice, it would need like 40 eps per season instead of 10. I didn't care for the Dany stuff last season because it needed so much more detail than it had gotten, and its inclusion felt like it detracted from the other more important plot points. This season, I feel that way about Robb's storyline right out the gates.

As for Tyrion specifically, something really fucking interesting needs to happen with him in order to justify keeping him central. I don't think he's going to betray his family, so I don't see that happening. The problem here is that Tywin's arrival quashed so much of what made Tyrion so significant to the story. Now if we have the sort of standard Tyrion clash with his father/sister thing that we usually get, it's going to just be a waste of time that could be spent on the several other more intriguing plots.

The show was already filled to the brim by the end of season 1, but now it's almost tripled in size, and there looks to be no stopping the expansion
  52. #1027
My guess for the second episode is that we'll get a wee bit in KL, Dany, and Snow, while picking up with Theon, Jaime, Arya, Varys, and whatever else is left. The show is just way too fucking big.

Hope this isn't my omniscience coming through but they started out as like 200 in the ranging and only 30ish left alive. I think you are supposed to interpret that as they are the remains of who escaped, not that they "defeated the horde."
  54. #1029
Yeah wuf I didn't think the night's watch took on the horde, just that they clashed somewhat and lost a lot of men.

You're right, story's huge. I was hoping to see just wtf happened at Winterfell, jesus christ. Even in the opening credits / map sequence the fucking thing is billowing smoke. Still have no explanation as for how it got burned up, other than it was the Greyjoy people leaving the place; which of course implies they weren't capitulating Theon to the Starks after all, which seems unlikely.

I'm sticking with my earlier prediction of jon snow ending up banging Ygritte and then having to kill her later, such a hail mary on my part. Well given the unlikeliness of the whole thing I'd just be accused of having been spoiled via the books, so wgaf.

Also I just thought about how I was censored last year when I repeated something GRRM said about the books, and am now reminiscing how terrible of a censor that was on Bikes' part. Absolutely nothing spoiled, shouldn't have been redacted.

Oh look, a game is starting up now...
  56. #1031
Yeah so many storylines, 40 minutes is so short to cover it all. We didn't even get to see the little Stark girl if I remember correctly. And God of Death guy, but that can take a while.
  57. #1032
Yea no Arya, no King Slayer, and no Theon. It's tough to fit more than 3-4 storylines into each ep, but the show is so good I can be patient.

I should repeat that if Dany doesn't burn the slave city to the ground, I will be very upset. The entire show has constructed her as somebody who would, and her doing so would be cathartic to the audience and make her an even more formidable and likable protagonist.

A burning path of destruction for those who do not treat the downtrodden with respect needs to follow her wherever she goes.

I'm a little curious as to whether Dany could understand the Valyrian the slave master spoke. Maybe she could, it would make sense if she could, but the show didn't hint at it too heavily. A case could be made for it though

bleh. you could have not said this

anyway Dany's advisor, Jorah or w/e the fuck his name is, went on about how she could atone for the morally ambiguous implications of hiring the dickless warriors by essentially treating them well so we'll see how this turns out.

If the slave city gets burned to the ground it seems unlikely that Dany would do it just because. Something else would have to happen. And now we've got the whole (awesome!) Ser Selmy shit going on that may or may not detract from the likelihood of the plot arc you're hinting at wuf.

What it is is waaaaaaaaaaaay too broad and ambiguous for it to suggest anything to you

Yes, but that could also fall into the common theme of Jorah being reasonable but Dany going against him because of her convictions, as always.

If the slave city gets burned to the ground it seems unlikely that Dany would do it just because. Something else would have to happen. And now we've got the whole (awesome!) Ser Selmy shit going on that may or may not detract from the likelihood of the plot arc you're hinting at wuf.
I don't think "something else" would need to happen. We already got the somber music and vivid description of the brutality onto the slaves. We already know that Dany is compassionate towards the downtrodden and is willing to fight for her convictions. She already told Qarth that she would burn them to the ground for defying her desires. Lucky for them they didn't

She is the Champion of the People and the Mother of Dragons; if she doesn't burn the Slave City to the ground, the writers are not doing what they should
  67. #1042
BTW I don't mean to spoil you. I didn't spoil, but I don't mean to be a presumptuous ass about it

I think what we're dealing with is that smart people can post, regardless of if they've read the books, and make sure to not spoil; while dumb people can't. On 2p2, the problem isn't bookreaders, but stupid bookreaders

I think I said last season that I think A Man Has A Name is a demigod, for the main reason that his magic is way better than anything else so far: teleportation, shape-shifting, and realigning another human's body. I just now realized that since he can teleport, he should never have been stuck in that cage and didn't need Arya to save him. That means that he did it on purpose, and is testing Arya or something.

Also I'm not a fan of Barristan serving as Kingsguard to both the Mad King and Robert but now backing Dany. That doesn't jive with the notion that he failed to protect the Mad King. What it says is he betrayed the Mad King and failed to protect Robert, unless there's some strange custom where the Kingsguard is not loyal to any one king, which is bleh

Good point on Dany going against Advisorbro, now that you put it that way it makes sense

I think Kingsguards stay on pretty much always, but you're right wuf. Despite Selmy's uber reputation as the greatest eeevar swordsmanbro his Kingsguard resume looks pretty shitty with two dead kings. lul.

    Im confused.

Sam pees himself, as whites stroll past him. How is he not dead? What happened with his brothers? Did they fight? Did the whites stroll past them too? WHATS GOING ON AROUND HEREEEEE

Also I didn't really string together the bit about A Man having teleportation powers necessarily, just thought he was slick as fuck. I feel like he was indeed stuck in that cage but it's hard to explain given how he's simply unable to be caught no matter what the fuck else he does. How does one catch a faceless man? Perhaps he took the form of someone who was wanted for something? derp

One more thing, I re-watched season 1 recently and I'm convinced that the undead creatures seen at the beginning - the ones you compared the run-of-the-mill zombiebros to, wuf, saying they paled in comparison - are probably another, more powerful, form of undead entirely. Probably the same fuckers who took the male newborns of that old sick fuck who banged all his daughters. Hence explaining the reaction of "holy shit you saw one of them?" when Jon Snow explains why he wants to join the wildlings.

P.S. who is that slave girl? I don't remember her wtf

Dunno I suppose Sam just seemed not to be a threat, and the fuckin walkers had business to attend to. As for his brothers, I think they just booked it for the fuckin' wall, like any sane nightswatchmen would do under the circumstances. We may see them again.

It's well established that the white walkers are altogether different from the zombies. I mean they use fucking ice swords and are like eight feet tall.
