i'm going to show my music geek side and tell you it's a pentatonic scale, which is a convenient scale to do this sort of thing in, 'cause random notes of that scale mashed together just sort of harmonize nicely without any painful clashes.

Yup, and the tone is a sine wave, the only tone that contains no harmonics, which means that there aren't any overtones that bash into each other.
